“But if you are led by the Spirit, you are not subject to the law." (Galatians 5:18) For a long time I wondered what this scripture actually meant. I believe I have found the answer. I believe that Jesus came to show us that the Law must be tempered by compassion. That if we are imbued with the Holy Spirit we are given the discernment to make compassionate choices. If a parent has a small child they will give that child certain rules (laws) to follow for their own protection and as guidelines for growing up to be a wise, kind and loving person. Rules like don't play in the street, don't take candy from strangers, share your toys, don't cheat, don't fight, and many others. When the child has grown into an adult he is no longer bound by these rules. That doesn't mean that he can just break them for his own benefit, but that he has developed the discernment to know how to respond in certain situations in ways that are beyond the qualifications of the original rules, as demonstrated by another scripture. “For you are called to freedom, brothers and sisters; only do not use your freedom as an opportunity for self-indulgence, but through love become slaves to one another” (Galatians 5:13). |
