I am not sure it is the right place for this Topic but Compassion is definitely part of it...
Thanks to a very interesting chat I had with friends about the common points between Star Wars and Tolkien's universe, I realized something very important for the way we deal with ourselves.

In the Lord of the Rings, we have this double character called Smeagol/Gollum- the Smeagol part is quite good, a little defenseless, kind while the Gollum part is greedy, aggressive and violent. Well, we considered that Smeagol could be an image of the Light Side while Gollum, an image of the Dark Side-
Now there is a second character linked to him, Frodo- who is often attacked by Gollum but finds enough compassion in his heart to let him live- even because killing Gollum would mean also killing Smeagol...
At the end of Frodo's journey, he is too weak to fulfill his mission on his own, but...Gollum does it for him- not in order to help but acting out of greed and violence- yet without this action, the whole world would have been lost in darkness...
I find it very interesting because inside of all of us we have a Smeagol, a Gollum and a Frodo: a Light part, a Dark part and an observer- that is happy when we do something good and that is angry when we do something bad- and that is the problem, but also the key to inner work-
Smeagol and Gollum are part of us, they are here- Frodo is the one who can allow both parts to work in harmony. Frodo, the observer should first of all accept both parts, observe them and see how he can use them at the best- when he sees something good, he should not feel too proud, he should acknowledge it and maintain it- when he sees something bad, he should not go into self pity, self anger or ignoring it, he should see how he can use it for good- like Gollum allowed Smeagol to survive.
We are tempted to reject the part of us we do not like but the key of balance is learning to like, to LOVE ourselves as a whole-

As Christians we should consider that Jesus died on the Cross for us, because he loves us, as a whole, so he is calling us to love ourselves too- indeed his most important commandment is love your brothers as you love yourselves...which implies to love ourselves...
