We all know that in order to create the Jedi, George Lucas got inspired by many traditions, the Christian Tradition is one of those- we may be used to thinking of the common points between the Canon Gospels and the Jedi Way, here I will explore the common points between the Gospel of Thomas and the Jedi Way and how they can be applied in real life. The Gospel of Thomas can also give us very interesting perspectives and meditation objects. 1. And he said, "Whoever discovers the interpretation of these sayings will not taste death." This reminds me of the last line of the Code “There is no death, there is the Force” as well as the second line “There is no ignorance, there is knowledge” here though, Jesus does not talk of knowledge but of discovering the interpretation of those teachings, that is to say their true meaning, or their hidden meaning- which no book or teacher can reveal but only our own heart, our own awareness. A Jedi should search for a higher knowledge, the hidden meaning of the teachings, but also of life itself. Indeed, the Living Force can give us signs at any moments, in the smallest event of our daily life, and we need to recognize and interpret those signs, they can help us grow and become enlightened- moreover, after death, everything material we know in this life will disappear, including teachings, what will remain is the hidden meaning of them, what is written between the words, the truth that no word can describe, only this higher knowledge can allow us to access Eternal Life. I will add that if truth has to be found in interpretation, it means that we need to look further than written words, and possibly beyond what we perceive of this world. 2. Jesus said, "Those who seek should not stop seeking until they find. When they find, they will be disturbed. When they are disturbed, they will marvel, and will reign over all. [And after they have reigned they will rest.]" Jedi are seekers “Jedi seek to improve themselves through knowledge and training.” So indeed, they never stop seeking, very often what we find disturbs us, especially when we seek inside of us, at this point many can be our reactions, marveling is positive, it is like a child discovering the world. Getting to know this world, inside and outside of ourselves, we may reach a certain mastery of it, in this we will reign, until we have reached a point where we have learnt all we could from this life, so we will rest, not die, rest…in the Force. I think this thought of seeking, accepting what we find, feeling marvel and mastering whatever we found (especially in ourselves- or gaining experience of things) can be a great meditation object and purpose of each morning when we get up. I will add that life itself is a daily seeking, truth, light, love, experience, this life is not an answer, it is a question... |

3. Jesus said, "If your leaders say to you, 'Look, the (Father's) kingdom is in the sky,' then the birds of the sky will precede you. If they say to you, 'It is in the sea,' then the fish will precede you. Rather, the (Father's) kingdom is within you and it is outside you. When you know yourselves, then you will be known, and you will understand that you are children of the living Father. But if you do not know yourselves, then you live in poverty, and you are the poverty." Of course, a Jedi should listen to the leaders of this world, but he should always question the things that are said and seek as said above. The Father’s Kingdom- the larger Universe of the Force- has no limit, it is not only in the sea, or in the sky, or inside of us, it is everywhere- of course, the best way to experience it is seeking inside, gaining more awareness, through meditation, observation of our world and of ourselves. The observer of the world is our own self so it is the first place to start if we wish to know everything else. We need to understand and see who we really are, beyond words, labels and definitions- getting to know ourselves is getting to know the Force and the Universe- it is also the way to discover our true selves: Luminous Beings. 4. Jesus said, "The person old in days won't hesitate to ask a little child seven days old about the place of life, and that person will live. For many of the first will be last, and will become a single one." "Truly wonderful, the mind of a child is." Master Yoda "Attack of the Clones" R.A.Salvatore The 900 years old Jedi Master with all his centuries of study and training recognizes the greatness of a child’s mind. A child’s mind is blank, open, clean, ready to receive any gift of knowledge, and aware of everything, so that it can filled with the Force. Moreover a child is often considered as less important than an adult (especially in Jesus’ times) so asking advices or teachings from a child is a great sign of humility. A Jedi Master should always keep an open mind, ready to learn- and accepting that knowledge may come from the most incredible source- simply a child- innocent, but so very close to the source of life. Also the first becoming last and a single one, is the total loss of ego, which makes me think of "The Jedi are selfless- we erase the self, to join with the flow of the Force. We care only about others." Anakin Skywalker "Revenge of the Sith" M.Stover Of course here it is important not to mistake self with ego- we do not need ego, it is an obstacle to our growth, but we need to know our own self and to take care of it- only helping and loving our selves will allow us to help and love others. |
