Yesterday, in my fruitless search for the Baldur's Goth portraits (yes, I know, I clicked on the link there on the front page, after reading carefully a few times, let's not go over old ground, I'm doing my best, OK?)
when I came across this:My Webpage
Perhaps the profound disturbance I experienced explains my inability to achieve my extremely simple objective.

I understand why Ghrey would have a pleased expression on his face -there is after all a beautiful woman sitting at his feet, in what appears to be adoration - but does anyone feel a strong sense of dislocation on perceiving this image, and that something is extremely wrong??

I recognize that picture. It was one of many from the big PPG-meet at Stoplight Red's place. She's got a whole online album of them someplace.

Let me guess, Eral. Ghreyfain should be sitting at her feet instead, no?

Ghrey has been working out. g'lain has always openly expressed her admiration for Ghrey.

I'd like to add that at this point I have taken my Spider Jerusalem action figure and tied his wrist to my Cassidy (from Preacher) action figure just so I can work out which positions are feasible with them and which aren't.

Read that and weep, internet. Weep!

See? No-one else is surprised.
Trying with all my might to speak logically and coherently (working out??! You've said this before Regull, but for the life of me I don't see it! What? Where?) I shall put my objections into words.
1. Sort of Lu. Having him sitting at her feet wouldn't work for me because that woman-on-a-pedestal bullshit is a giant con in my opinion. I had hoped feminism would have lead to this attitude being killed dead and cold, and I do despair at seeing it so alive and well and happening now.
2. Umm, I'm sure that Ghrey is a very nice lad, and that if I met him in person, characteristics not readily apparent in his online persona would become apparent to me, and I would understand Glain's admiration more clearly. Well no. I'm sure Ghrey is a very nice lad, but I am baffled, baffled utterly by glain's regard for him.

The thing that I have always admired Ghrey for is that he is an out and out bastard who revels in whimsical offense of all who come across his path and has never demonstrated the least bit of concern for the feelings of others. I have never seen a comment by glain that could be construed in any way as snarky, rude or careless. Is this just a case of my cloistering schoolmarm ways preventing me from seeing a perfectly normal attraction-for-the-opposite? Am I failing to perceive that Ghrey is dead handsome and sexy and that is a strong mitigator in the case?

I so have to stop going to SHS forums. It just upsets me.

So are you saying that this woman-on-a-pedestal bullshit has nothing to do with feminism, Eral, or is it kinda wrong tendency, but within feminism? I definitely know very little, if anything what this concept (feminism) actually is about.
John Lennon called himself a feminist, as I recall. But I've lately read quite a serious article on Janis Joplin's life, and there was the author's comment that as a matter of fact, the hippies' attitude fits what is called sexism today pretty well, so maybe JL wasn't actually a feminist at all

Putting a woman on a pedestal implies that she's fragile and not good for much but decoration.

Equal footing works just fine.

(I really can't speak for John Lennon, as I never knew him.)

Not that John and I talked much about feminism, he was always singing and playing guitar or piano instead. OK, actually it's a well-known fact that he considered himself a feminist, e.g the album Double Fantasy reveals it, and a lot of other stuff, songs, interviews, etc
As for whether a woman on a pedestal is nothing but decoration... perhaps I'd love to try how it feels being on a pedestal anyway, even if sort of scientific experiment, like what direction does water go in the toilet and such

Eral. Allow me to explain the mystAry of tEH internet.

I told you we needed to talk. Can you hear me now? ;D

(and SHS has nothing to do with my lack of surpirise. She was admiring him before I went on hiatus from PPG.)

Maybe he's a completely different guy in real life. But I doubt it. ;)

Okay, my turn, because I'm very confused by this statement.. If you are serious, where are you from?

"Where are you from" as in "where were you born" or "where do you live" or what? And what is it that you find confusing, Cybersquirt? Well, my guess is that feminism is about equal rights for men and women, but that hardly gives me a right to say that I know what it actually is. E.g. political and philosophical doctrines exist in a particular historical context, and can't be considered otherwise. And a lot of more stuff must be considered as well, I guess

The point to feminism is simple. Feminism is about equal rights and equal treatment/opportunities for women. Women don't have equal rights and equal treatment/opportunities yet. (They still are paid far less than men, are frequently passed over for promotions or simply are not hired due to their gender, etc) Hence, feminism still exists.
Poor baby. Couldn't find a fight anywhere else so you had to come here, huh. -Cyber.

Well, some women don't have equal responsibilities either, and they sometimes may like it, I guess

@Cybersquirt
Well, I can milk a cow and prefer being barefoot whenever it's possible, if I now understand your question "where are you from" correctly, but it's not that I was raised in a quasi-medieval world and never even heard such words as 'feminism' before arrival in NYC

Cyber, I feel strangely uncomforted by your explanation. Yes, I am aware of the longevity of her admiration -but that doesn't make it any less wrong.

Lu, I am currently composing a short history of feminism for your perusal. Look for it in the Open Mic section. It's that, or a heavy course of reading of Simone de Beauvoir, Betty Freidan, Germaine Greer, Marilyn French, Gloria Steinem and Andrea Dworkin. For starters.

Regarding, Ghrey's working out. Several clues would point to that conclusion.

1) The "No snacks for your children" line in his signature was actually a link to a gym.

2) A modest public announcement that he had gained weight to 'glain.

3) An overall beefier appearance that is especially noticeable when the linked picture and his new avatar ( :'( ) are compared.

I hope you're just joking about the feminist issues there.

Evi, I for one am definitely not joking about feminist issues. Judging by the list of authors Eral mentions and as I already suspected, it's not just "women rule" or "you, Evi, have the same rights as any male", and that's it
Eral, there was a documentary Emma Goldman on TV last night, do you know this name? They mostly talked about anarchism, but feminism was also mentioned a couple times
And I'd rather read your composition than those boring books, sure enough (if you still feel like writing it)

For crying out loud, it's a photo of two friends, one of whom happens to be sitting on the floor. That doesn't mean anything. Some people like to sit on the floor over sitting on a chair. Just because the woman in the photo is sitting on the floor doesn't mean that the man forced her there or made her think that 'that's a woman's place'.

And how has this become a rant about Ghrey? He 'has never demonstrated the least bit of concern for the feelings of others'?! What!? Are you thinking about the same person I'm thinking of? Ghrey is a really nice guy and I have no idea idea where this view that he is an absolute shit has come from...

This is fucking ridiculous.

On this one, I am largely in agreement with the honourable Mr. Squeaker.

I have observed Ghrey being mean re: Ketra though, and that's below the belt.

Mostly though, I just think he's funny.

Again, I can only speak for myself but I like Ghrey. I find Ghrey amusing and I will add that I am sorry if anyone has misconstrued my remarks. I did put the "bad blood" remark in manly pink. The "omg" remark was to indicate my astonishment at the apparent visitation by Ghrey to Coffeetalk. My only regret over Ghrey's new avatar is that it replaced the penguins which I thought were exquisite. I have no problem with Ghrey working out, if indeed, he is exercising.

I find no oppressive subtext in the linked picture. To me, it appears that Ghrey has been reading a comic book and g'lain is fiddling with a camera. I also think g'lain looks lovely in the picture.

I will add, that while Ghrey did indeed make derogatory statements about Ketra, I was not offended but I don't think he was trying to be nice and helpful when he wrote those comments. I think he either has a predjudice against hairy dogs or he was teasing, or whatever. Despite writing a post on the subject, I don't really care.

I must admit that I have had a soft spot for Ghrey ever since he shared his Dogmeat story.

http://forums.pocketplane.net/index.php/to....html#msg219847

It is possible, Grim, that Eral may have a different take on Ghrey than you based on her encounters with Ghrey. It is also possible that it is, unlike Ice and Jolyth, a light hearted teasing. I'm sure Eral would happily clarify her position to you.

it's not that I was raised in a quasi-medieval world and never even heard such words as 'feminism' before arrival in NYC

I guess the question has more to do with what environment you were raised in.

But I realize that has little to do with it as I am most definitely a feminist, among other things, to the point of being infuriated by my father sitting on his butt and asking my mother (who has just sat down to eat after cooking for the last hour) where the bread is. And my frustration is then at her for getting it, like she has nothing better to do and he doesn't have two fucking feet.

:rooster:

I am frightened (truly) by the thought that there are women out there who don't know what feminism is. Not that they have to subscribe to it but how could you/they not know what it even is?
