Speaking of horror movies the first 4 Halloween movies are the best.

I'm just going to say NWN2 is the r0x0rz.

The stronghold part of the game is really good. You get to rebuild, recruit, train and equip troops, and tradesmen/merchants to work at the keep.

When you make your own +4/+5 weapons, you can give them custom names. So I now have Mordred's rapier of doom +5 which deals 1d6 electricity damage and a +5 Chillmetal rapier +5 which deals 1d6 cold damage and 1 damage electrical from the darkmetal, which I dual-wield.

Not only that but with the monkey-grip feat, you can now dual-wield scythes. Awesome. Although those are too large for the ce halfling rogue 3/fighter 6/assassin 3/duellist 6 I'm playing at the moment, so I'm sticking to rapiers.

But you can make weapons/armour out of mithral (light), alchemical silver and cold iron for certain creatures, adamantine (which overcomes the stoneskin spells damager reduction) and dark metal.

I have befriended a giant magical spider, and constructed a blade golem to fight as a party member.

And the story ain't bad either. :D

Edit: Oh yeah, for you celestial fury fans, they have a katana called Divine Fury which appears to be pretty similar (no chance of lightning on hit though but chance to stun is there).

A demo? To see if your system can handle it?

No, because I want to see exactly what the party system is like.
My system could handle it: it runs Oblivion high-end. (Mr.FPS is a geek and computer head.)

I was one of those BG fans who when NWN was released raced off straight away to buy it, sure in the knowledge that Bioware would never betray me and all the other single player campaign CRPG players out there by reducing our beloved leader and party style of game. Micro-management? I'm obsessive, I love micro management. Balancing fighters and mages, clerics and druids, getting really big swords and nifty armour: it's a great life.
And what happened? NWN1 was a travesty, a poke in the eye, and had character inter-actions that were less interesting than those in IWD1. :rooster:
My bitterness at the way that thief henchman kept running off to fight zombies I was trying to avoid because I was too low level to fight them (having only encountered barrels in my previous efforts to get some XP) ;the complete inadequacy of the "romance" with Aerin Gend; and the really irritating way your summoned creatures and henchmen wouldn't attack enemies unless you did, and so when I played as a mage I had to use my weapon instead of spell cast, or get killed by goblins - just to mention a few of the flaws I found I had irreconciliable differences with - resulted in my seperation from Bioware, and a new relationship with Bethesda.

So yep, I want to see a demo, and I want to see exactly how much they haven't fixed. Then I can decide if the benefits outweigh the annoyances. As you and BR seem to have. Which is a good sign.

Hmm, well I can say they fixed alot of the party grievances by 1.02 and the performance issues will be addressed in 1.03 which is out soon.

But if you love micro-management then you can just set all the characters to puppet mode and manage away. They still tend to run after enemies, but I never found it too much of a problem, because the maps are smaller so they won't get too far ahead of you.

You get 3 and then later 4 henchman in the party so it gives you a party to balance, although one thing I don't like is that at times you are forced to use one NPC or another, but again this is a small gripe.

But most of the NPCs you meet early on have a detailed personal quest, and there's plenty of banter, but the voice work is pretty poor.

What you say is very persuasive, and given my antipathy to Bioware was so great I refused to visit their website for a rather long period,
I am very impressed that your review of the game is swaying me positively towards it. (Though I really really hated the way the henchmen run off: and am not sure I will be able to contain my inner :rooster: in the event of it happening often.)

You don't work for Bioware, do you? :cyber:

Looks like it might be a go after 1.03 is released. I shall not blame you if all my darkest fears are realised again.

Bioware and Obsidian rule! Best game companies out there.

NWN2 is nothing like NWN. Better graphics, smarter npcs, better npcs you can talk to them, take their quests, give them better equipment. The story is vastly better compared to NWN.

Work for Bioware? no, although I reckon it'd be a cool job.

Well I just finished the game and the final battle is a micromanager's delight with so much going on I was pushing the pause button every two seconds. With all the spells and spell effects there were pretty colours everywhere

Now I am going to play again, with a bit of meta-gaming thrown in to appeal to my more powergamery instincts.

One problem I have though in case you think I'm totally biased is you can see the plot elements that are basic carbon copies of other games, although that is not always a bad thing, but I wonder if there's anything truly original left to do in the world of rpg?

I guess we need the dialogue and character progression of Planescape: Torment (with true evil not jerk dialogues), true free-roaming like BG1 and Oblivion only better, the party banter and romances of BG2, a story to rival PS:T, the BG series and IWD 1 and 2 combined and the super munchkinness and hack-n-slash of Hordes of the Underdark. Hopefully that day will come soon.

Having said all that NWN2 is up there just behind PS:T and BG2 in my book.

That about sums up the way all CRPGers feel. I bet game developers feel like crying sometimes.

Can't remember where they sit precisely in the "cool companies" to work for around here, but it is pretty high up.

The top-rated company to work for in Edmonton though, produces accounting software.

That is tragically sad. I hope it's because they have a really good pension plan, or something.

A friend of mine got a part-time job in a Doughnut King shop when we were in school. She was bitterly disappointed to find that the outcome was a life-long hatred of doughnuts. She would say,"if you knew what I knew, you would never eat another doughnut again either."

I remember reading a column by a person who worked for PCGamer, or some such magazine, and he said it was the best job he could think of, being paid to play new games and then write about them.

I sometimes think I'd be happy in a shoe shop.

I dunno, I worked for a company that makes network management and helpdesk software, on balance it was the best job I had until they restructured it giving massive bonuses to the sales staff and screwing the admin staff.

The hours for non-customer-support staff are basically "work whenever you want, provided you put in your time." They have on-site nap rooms and a lot of other perks, and it's a really nice facility.

I interviewed there once, but didn't get the position. I wasn't really qualified for it (tech writing), so that wasn't exactly surprising. Could have learned in a flash, I'm sure, but so it goes.

Kewl, I know the 'offical' consensus is that the NWN Original Campaign is t3h sux0r0z, but I didn't think it was great but not that bad either.

Hordes of the Underdark is definitely the best of the three, but it follows on from Shadows over Undrentide so you might want to play that first.

I finally beat the OC of NWN a few weeks ago. I didn't hate the story, but on the other hand, I've been playing with that character for years without really feeling a gripping need to press on through to the end.

I'll eventually play both expansion campaigns as well, I'm sure, but right now I've been going through the Shadowlords/Dreamcatcher series of mods, and that definitely has me going "ok, what's next?" And I'm likely to try another mod called Dances with Rogues after that.

NWN2 might turn up in my Christmas stocking though.

Well the 1.03 patch for NWN2 is out.

I'll give those mods a go then Bex. I've only really played Kingmaker which was OK, and the Nether Scrolls which was a transition from SoU to HotU mod, pretty much hack'n'slash but then it was advertised as such and had Deekin so it was OK. :D

I've almost got the initial NWN2 fever out of my blood after playing it for a few weeks. Although the Plansecape NWN 2 mods look pretty tempting.
