Because sometimes I have something to say and it doesn't belong in any of the other threads.

Oh, yes, this is a glorified spam thread, oh my!

Just do what I do, lara. Make a thread all to itself.

Chat is random at times, but is part of its beauty. I prefer not to call it spam, I prefer whimsy, nonsense or blather.
It is despised by some whom I note are perfectly happy to be frivolous on irc where no record remains  But I think we can safely say those of us here, (except Joe whose sense of fun is, umm, different to everyone else in the whole world) are blatherers and proud.

Besides, when CT was first set up icelus ( :4jon: big guy) specifically banned spam, pillow fight or spatula threads. Out of respect for and fear of him, I would strongly recommend seperate threads.
It will probably end up all in one thread anyway, as we get confused where we first started talking about it, but hey, I can deal if you can.

Here's a random question for Krazy, just how serious is the movement for Scottish independence?

Puerto Rico has an independence movement but when people go to vote on the issue, a whopping 2.5% vote for it. Most vote for the situation to remain the same.

Also, how's that spy poisoning going? Wasn't there something in the 70s about Russian assasinations in England specifically and radioactive umbrella tips?

I'd like to add that at this point I have taken my Spider Jerusalem action figure and tied his wrist to my Cassidy (from Preacher) action figure just so I can work out which positions are feasible with them and which aren't.

Read that and weep, internet. Weep!

Scotland and Wales for that matter are already somewhat devolved from England. They have their own parliaments and their representatives can vote on matters concerning England whilst English MPs cannot vote on Scottish or Welsh matters which is a source of resentment for the English.

Scotland has its own local taxation, and autonomy on matters such as health and education for instance. But as to a clean break I don't know to be honest, although I wonder what they would gain from it.

The poisonings you can read the latest here, because there have been several instances of radiation found including planes and the ex-spy's wife tested positive with it.

I can answer that one a bit: both Wales and Scotland got limited autonomy: they have Parliaments that can govern, like a state government.

Wasn't it you that pointed out Puerto Rico gets most of it's money from America? Why have independence?

They have found traces of the radioactive poison in a sushi bar Litivenko went to and planes contaminated by it : it sounds like the person who poisoned him is glowing green at the moment.
Krazy will have more detail.

Seems you are pretty well informed Eral, and I take it you aren't a cricket fan as you haven't been mentioning the Ashes.

Ah, "a plot to discredit Russia in the eyes of the international community," quite possibly. I'm sure the Americans are behind it. I think people have an inflated idea of the US's competency probably hollywood's fault.

Apparently according to some sources the poisoner's middle name is Igor,

"We know who he is." Well either the police will be arresting him very shortly, or a whole bunch of NotW reporters are going to go down with cases of polonium poisoning.

Krazy: you are right about the cricket: but also, Regullus didn't ask about the cricket.

Regullus: we must have one American-control-in-Latin America conspiracy. It's a tradition.

Where we come from, "spam" embraces all off-topic (ie. non-IE-game-related) generic chatter, blather, etc.

It's not frowned upon except for "postcount +1" style posting. Which is exactly the kind of thing to which iceicebaby (*mwah*) was so vehemently opposed.

But this isn't that kind of thread. The quiz thread, on the other hand....

So tonight I caught myself thinking of someone (on teh innernets) as a young whippersnapper. Nobody any of you know, unless you're secretly frequenting my writing forums. I know the girl in person, but I don't think she knows who I am on the forum as opposed to IRL, since she just signed up today. I do wonder if she would have replied the way she did if she knew, you know?

She replied to a thread I posted as a thought exercise as though I were seeking advice ("should I use this abstract concept as a guide in my own writing?" as opposed to "hey, what do you guys think of this idea from a novel I just finished reading?"), from her position of authority as "an actor and a poet." This grated on me, I suppose because she was so far off-base from my intent, and her tone really struck me as pretentious and condescending. Plus it was a thread from six months ago or something like that.

I don't think it's an age thing. I've always hated being treated like an idiot just because I happen to be younger, and I really try to be fair about stuff like that.

Arg.

There is nothing more annoying than receiving advice when you asked for opinions, than receiving said advice from someone who should get back to you in ten years.
The young have this strange idea they know a lot of stuff, and they should share it. I think it's because you are very ego-centric when young, and you act on impulse. It helps if you can think to yourself, she doesn't know she sounds pompous and big-headed, and will be really embarrassed later on when she realises. Point out that she missed the intent of your question. If she hurriedly changes her stance, you'll know she's just being young and you have helped her learn a valuable lesson. :angel2: If she doesn't, you are then entitled to smack her down and put her back in her box. :)

Probably not, the informal and relatively anonymous nature of the internet changes the way people respond to some degree.

And you've hit upon one of the banes of my life that really boils my blood as well.

heh, I should have said News of the World's more memorable headlines go along the line of "Elvis found on moon", "Man with dog's head found" etc.

Oh, I don't really want to smack her. And I think everyone can make a contribution to a discussion, regardless of age or status in life, but I do request that they understand the topic.

I did point out that she'd missed the point, but gently. I even used a smilie. So we'll see what happens. It's not like I care that much now that I've slept on it.

Sounds like "News of the World" is a very similar paper to that published as "The Weekly World News" here. My mom bought one once (Kitten Accused of Murder!) and it's still in my magazine basket because it's freaking hilarious. Once you realize it's a comedy paper (an interview with Mother Goose; an article about a team of 6 French chefs winning a soup-making competition, proving many cooks don't spoil the broth after all), it's even funnier than "The Onion."

Yes, but here everything is off-topic. So lara can start a thread about whatever.

We are sitting around blathering about whatever. We have CT precisely because game based sites don't like off-topic chat - or at least say they don't. :sarcasticeyeroll:
We come here so we don't annoy them: which is pretty funny when you think about the GFW. Which I hasten to re-acknowledge was all my fault.

I know at the time of the GFW some members expressed a view that this was a "craptalk" forum, which seemed to mean because we are not a serious game based site the rules out lined in Invision's Terms of Use don't apply. As a newb who only participated at EFCB, I was amazed by this: jc would never permit abuse at EFCB, and I was under the impression that it was an alleged "craptalk" forum. I was also miffed that I wasn't involved in the discussion which lead to the decision being made: because when we first set up house here nobody said, "oh and, anyone can come along and be a complete arsehole". Which would have made the GFW less baffling.

Obviously, as a Blur Person, my views are completely unimportant in the wider IE world: but it would be kind of nice if it wasn't the case here.

Thanks Bex for the explanation of my definition of spam. Eral, I just feel like I need to have something thread-worthy to start a thread, not, "I just ate way too much chocolate cake and I feel fat but it was great" or somesuch, which can be something I really want to say, but is a bit of a boring thread subject. Well, maybe.

I got to write the headline "Naked man on crack loses arm to gator" the other day. That's a headline I will NOT be able to write at CBC.CA.

My favourite stupid story in a tab had the headline "Giant gefilte fish attacks ocean liner," or somesuch, with a "gefilte" fish pictrued about to snap a huge boat in two.

I've just changed my electricity supplier to one that provides all electricity from renewable sources, and I chose the option for 100% green power and not 15% at a small premium.

The way it works is for every unit I use, they ensure that 1 unit from 100% renewables is fed back into the national supply as in incentive they give shares in the company to the first 100,000 customers.

Here's the link if you are interested.

Think of a random chat thread as being particularly like IRC, but on your own time.

Krazy: good on you.

One of the engineers at work has negotiated a shorter work week for herself in order to achieve a more balanced life for herself and her family. Starting in January, she'll no longer be working on Fridays. I do think that if more people talked about this kind of thing, it would become a more acceptable practice.

Bosses have to be open to the idea: and the workplace and job conducive to it. Some jobs are trickier than others than to share or downsize. Also, you have to be able to afford it.
I remember years ago, a story about a Vice-President of Microsoft who encouraged a nine-to-five day in his area. It went very much against the "work long hours and impress the high-ups" mentality of the company: but was very successful. Employees were happier, less stressed, took less sick leave and worked more productively.
