So... my new job. Got the offer (and accepted it) on Nov. 23. Was given two options for start dates - Dec. 27 or Jan. 2. Not sure why I chose Dec. 27, except to just get it over with. Had layoffs at my current workplace on Nov. 30, which likely would have put me at the bottom of the seniority list (next on the guillotine, I said at PBG) and made work hellish (not enough employees to do the job). Got a summons for jury duty on Thursday - I have to show up on Jan. 2.

Yup.

New contract says I get paid if called for jury duty.

I am so glad that something (someone) told me to pick Dec. 27 as my start date because I don't know what happens when you say "I can't show up for work on my first day because I have jury duty."

My new boss laughed when I told her and said "You just get more and more interesting." When I said good-bye (on the phone) she said, "Well, we'll see you Dec. 27, barring any lightning strikes or lottery wins."

It's God, double-booking your life. That sort of thing happens every now and then - he's got a lot to organise. I'm glad your boss took it well.
A friend of mine fell pregnant with each of her three kids just after starting a new job. She said for years after, she would be very very nervous after starting a new job.
