K. So I beat the original campaign. There's really not a logical reason to take my character through Shadows of Undrentide, is there? |

No, there isn't. You'll be around level 16-17 in a campaign designed for level 1 PCs. The HotU expansion ties up some lose ends from the NWN OC, but you are supposed to use the SoU character for it as HotU follows on from the end of SoU. |

Well. That's kind of shitty. I was hoping HotU was more of a take-off of the original campaign. Will it be totally senseless (in the roleplaying sense) to use my OC character in HotU? |

It would not make much sense to use your OC character for HotU and I'll tell you why as it doesn't really spoil. You'll find all this out 1 minute after the intro to it anyway. Basically, you'll meet 4 of the Henchman from the NWN OC who travelled to Waterdeep where HotU starts after the OC events and they don't know who you are, they just know that you are the 'hero' of the SoU campaign. There's one NPC from the SoU campaign who's there as well who knows all about you and your deeds from SoU. So it wouldn't work in an RP sense at all. |

Alright, well I'll start over in SoU, and consider the OC a practice run. How is SoU+HotU as an epic campaign? Is it better or worse than the OC story-and gameplay-wise? Can I have more than one henchman in SoU, and view their inventory? |

SoU and HotU combined are better than the OC, HotU easily being the best of the 3 games. In SoU you get 1 Henchman, in HotU you get 2 Henchman but in both you can examine and change their inventory ie use them as pack mules, give them better weapons/armour and so on. |

The power level in HotU gets ridiculous, though. Walking around with +6 or better weapons doing elemental damage, permanent True Sight and Haste, and Regeneration all at once is a bit silly. |

I've been playing and loving the 2-part campaign A Dance with Rogues. The story is dark and complex; the world startlingly realistic. The NPCs are excellent, and you can have up to 4 henchmen in areas where that many are available (sometimes the plot demands fewer, or none at all). They're chatty too. That said, the mod has a lot of adult content (disturbing to hot to cheesy) and I could see it being off-putting for some audiences (much can be avoided, but not all). I checked ADWR out because of the rave reviews, and haven't been disappointed. Some of the combat gets pretty tough (most in part 1 can be avoided completely; not so easy to avoid in part 2), but it helps a lot to equip properly and be sneaky and clever. What really sells me on the mod is the emotional impact. Not only are there a lot of tense, edge-of-seat, "if I'm spotted, I'm dead" parts, but I've had moments where I've been genuinely shocked, outraged, or just plain blown away by one twist or another. My only hesitation in giving this a whole-hearted recommendation is that I feel a lot of people wouldn't be able to get past the idea that it's a pulpy bodice-ripper, and that does an injustice to what has so far been one of the best gaming experiences I've ever had. OH, uh, you also have to play a female character. Backstory demands it. |

HEH. Well that is a problem--I imagine you also have to play as a rogue? Also let me say that I prefer Forgotten Realms settings to custom worlds, and I really, really despise games that force you into a "chosen one" role of some form or another, or games that have already mapped out your personal history. I found it hard to care about the plot and characters in SoU, because I felt like I had all these people pushed on me, and I as a gamer was not familiar with them at all. In the OC and HotU, I was able develop my feelings for NPCs on my own. Plus, the PC in SoU is more or less forced to take care of business because of his or her connection to Drogan, but in HotU and the OC, the PC makes what you might call an unbiased decision to help people, whatever his or her reason may be for doing so. |

Can't say that I do, but then I haven't played many fan modules. But I have tried out ADWR, although I'm not very far into it, I've completed about 4 of the 7 trials that comprise your initial quest. It does make you think about using other skills other than your sword arm, granting little xp for problems solved by combat (from what I've seen) and in fact the direct approach will get you killed and it was designed like that from what I can tell. My only criticism is that it is a little too easy to die. You often have to sneak around without being seen, but some things spot you way too easily and that's it. Even a bunch of rats will kill you in no time which made me think wtf? The adult content is ok, I could understand people of a prudish disposition getting on their high horse about it. I've taken the cheesy stuff with a grain of salt. Some rogues levels are probably required but you could multi-class according to the read me so it shouldn't be that much trouble. The story is pretty good and I can empathize with the fate of the lead character and I'm developing it so she harbours deep resentment for what happened to her. The fact that you are playing a female (as a male) is no big thing to overcome considering the detail and immersiveness of the story. I like the moral content as well, stealing anything gets you an automatic 5 points towards chaotic, something that should be in more CRPGs. Still didn't stop me looting every chest though. |

Yeah, I haven't played a lot of different modules either. Shadowlords/Dreamcatcher/Demon was pretty good, if also flawed (it's old). It might answer your wishes for character freedom and motivation, Joe. Only one proper henchman at a time, but you can develop a fairly deep relationship with them. Storywise though, it can't hold a candle to ADWR. Krazy: I bought a padded catsuit from Drago for a couple of hundred gold pieces. It upped my sneaking skills just enough that I very rarely failed a check afterwards. I found that my PC experienced a real turning point, not too long after completing her training, as far as competence and confidence went. Not that there weren't some very tough fights after that point, but dying outside of what should be a tough fight was unlikely. The ADWR campaign is definitely easiest if you start out as a rogue, but I've multiclassed mine to be more combat-oriented (good for part 2). A lot of players branch into spellcasting, and I know several have indicated that they've played through with no rogue levels at all (probably requires familiarity with the game, like soloing BG). |

Yeah, I had hoarding issues as well. I think the catsuit was the only item I bought for a long, long time (other than the mission-required ones), and I mostly wore and used gear acquired during my training. Didn't even have a bow until I finally found one. Drago offered better prices than the other fence, incidentally, though you might roll differently on your initial appraise check. If you haven't discovered this yet, there are a couple of ways of getting completely healed for free or for cheap, while the city businesses are open during the day. Really handy for those first few levels. Even by the end of the mod, purchases need to be made wisely. Recovering and selling trap kits is one way of making a few bucks. I ended up with way more than I could use. (Note: recovering traps doesn't always yield XP; higher-level fire trap kits seem to be bugged this way.) |

Yeah I've found a couple of places to rest/heal like the public baths. I'm doing the Golden Chalice quest and the 4 zombie priests are giving me a bit of a headache. I've found the gauntlets of pickpocketing and with them have a skill level of 20, yet every attempt I make at getting their keys has failed. It seems I went from broke level 3 to rich level 5 in no-time. I now have a round a clear 1k gp, after I bought some traps to kill off Rick and his gang which I accomplished at level 4, and I was quite happy with getting the title "The Destroyer". |

Seems I went from level 5 to 7 in one step as well, after becoming the high priestess of the Hyath. No prizes for guessing how you become one of those  Got a hugh chunk of xp, a lovely ring of prot +5, and half-plate +4, along with the amulet of natural armour +2, and 10 ranks of tumble mean I'm going round with an AC of 31. Not bad. |

Heh. Did you ever try to get Christano to haul you back up with your rope? I don't recall having a lot of trouble pickpocketing those keys. Don't remember what my score was, but probably similar to yours after enhancement. I don't have a lot of points placed in that skill, being unaccustomed to having much use for it and all. Rick & Co. gave me a lot of trouble, and I put that quest on the back-burner until after wrapping up the Golden Chalice. Then I managed to find my way into their daytime hideout - easy pickings. I was rather pleased with myself. |

Yeah, I played out that scenario for the sake of seeing what would happen, but wasn't really actively trying to be evil this time around, so I didn't keep the save, tempting though the goodies may have been. Been holding fast at a CN alignment. I'm planning a few replays at some point, since there are several romance paths in part 2. I wouldn't put that kind of time into replaying the OC, that's for sure. |

It seems I was just getting really poor rolls on my pick-pocket attempts not only did every one fail but they were detected as well so I ended up having to fight and getting wtfpwned by a single critical hit from their scythes. When I reloaded I got all 4 keys no trouble so don't know what was up there. I didn't get Rick and Co to haul me back up the rope, they had gone when I tried. But I did end up fighting the female Cleric which took positively ages. Which meant I had to go through the hall of traps one of which got me that I didn't detect and wiped 3 points off my strength which I had no way of dealing with. So I spent ages crawling along heavily encumbered, including the bit where you are captured. After becoming the Priestess you go back up to the door to let them through and then continued the quest as is nothing happened (so they don't get suspicious) however in the alley with the skeleton archers I told them to stay put whilst I cleared away the traps but they ran forward regardless, Christiano got stunned by the sonic traps and the skeleton archers finished him off. This makes the cleric go all nuts and attack you, and the fight took positively ages because she was loaded up with healing spells and I wasn't hitting her that often enough. In the end I used my new armour's darkness ability and managed to wipe her out with sneak attacks. As a Rogue 5/Fighter 1/Assassin 1 with +4d6 sneak attack it was much easier. As for Rick and Co, I used strong sonic traps, not to expensive and they often stun which helps. The trap took away half Rick's hit points and stunned him and then a sneak attack got him to near death. One more hit and he was gone and then I legged it as his crossbow goons were hitting me a bit too frequently. I will admit I got them separately the next night. At the moment I seem to be developing into Sharon Stone's character from Basic Instinct. Sleeping with men and then killing them. Great fun. This is definitely worth replaying, I think I'll go for a more 'balanced' character next time. |

I got strength-drained for a fair while as well, but must have found a restoration potion somewhere, as I'm sure I wasn't by the time we left. I think I know which trap you mean, as I set one off that I couldn't detect. I figured I'd waited long enough that the hall must be safe to walk down. Bah. Plus, one of the zombies noticed me, and I figured I'd lure it off by itself and kill it, which was kinda stupid. Got diseased twice and managed to sort of fix myself up by popping through a secret door and using healing kits, but re-stealthing didn't help. They seem to lock on target once you're spotted. It was at that point, strength-drained, badly beaten by the zombie, and wanting to maybe rest and regroup that I thought I'd call for Christano to get me out of there. So I was seriously pissed at finding them gone. As far as immersiveness goes, that was a great gaming moment. |

Heh, me too. I thought whatshername might memorize a neutralize poison and rid me of the ability penalty when I finally got out but no such luck. I also found out quite by accident that having a bath removes any lowered ability scores. The white dragon decided to eat me first time we met. Ho hum. Trying to bluff dragons is not a good idea apparently... I just saved the Baron's hide and killed the nasty wizard. Which was a tough battle, I ended up having to tell Pia and the Baron to keep out of harm's way to stop them getting themselves killed. I've got close to 20k, with at least 10k's worth of stuff I could sell. The Baron had quite a hoard of cash and gems in his castle, and the mausoleum netted some nice stuff too. The shop in the mountains was offering twice the amount I'd normally get so I sold all of the hoard to him and hardly noticed the 2k I spent on a greater magic bag to lug my spiffy evil high-priestess armour around. Great for combat but the -7 hit to stealth skills is too big at the moment. I'm approaching 9th level as a Rogue 5/Fighter 1/Assassin 2. I had to spend my 8th level ability point on Str, so I'd have enough to get Cleave and Power Attack when I take my 2nd fighter level next. That was a D'oh! moment. And it seems my character and Pia are an item now. |
