I have just watched a documentary on the life of David Vetter. http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/amex/bubble/index.html It is a tremendously moving film, and the website is well-rounded and thoughtful, offering insights into the POV of his parents, doctors, the film makers, and ethicists. The question I am left with is: just how awful is this story? Is David a hero? A victim? Both? I can see why his parents decided on this life for them all: they loved him, he was precious to them and they wanted him to live. His mother steadfastly maintains that he was happy and had a good life : I would need to believe that too. One of the doctors states that suffering is a part of life, and particularly for children with this illness, and there are no easy options. The knowledge gained from studying David has contributed to advances which have meant children no longer die. I find it very difficult to make a simple pronouncement: not having walked in their shoes. But 12 years in an isolator. :'( EDIT: I have just googled Ted de Vita. He died at age 17 after 9 years in a "bubble." :( His treatment was a holding pattern, like David Vetter's. I have also read about Baby Fae, who received a baboon heart transplant in 1986. Now that case seems like out and out medical experimentation. Interestingly, many people who objected to it did so on the grounds of animal cruelty.
