Women as objects; ...sexuality is tricky stuff

But a man admiring a woman he finds beautiful, or a woman doing the same is not unnatural or wrong.

This does not equal pornography.

A woman who displays herself for admiration is not doing anything wrong.

This could be described as egotism, which is wrong. Also, a woman who poses for her natural beauty is different than a woman who poses nude so that men may masturbate to her naked body.

I'm ambivalent about pornography. The industry can be exploitative. On the other hand, there's the efforts of "the world's only underground DIY anarcho-feminist porn collective."

Porn for women.
Damn G rating.
Is it just me, or do porn sites look tacky and cheap? Although that one does look fun.

Hypothetically speaking (), how would I know, right?, I guess people aren't so worried about the design as much as the content.

A lot of porn sites look tacky and cheap, pretty much for the reasons Krazy gives.

There's cool stuff out there though, much artier and higher class. Supercult, for example, which I'd better don't link from work.

A pro-porn group is trying to get videos that show sex between consenting adults off the banned list here. They've been campaigning for the longest time, trying to break down the perception of porn as sordid. They regularly have Festivals of Erotica, and get articles in the paper about how normal it is and how it's time for us to be grown up. And then they spoil it by appearing in public wearing dog collars and scaring everyone.

People in Australia are scared of people wearing dog collars?

Her point was that people aren't taking them seriously when they show up dressed like a bunch of freaks.

Really? Never got the memo about that one. Murder is wrong. So is fucking goats (unless you are also a goat). But egotism? Not buying it.

Aye. Compare PornoTube with YouTube.

Of course, a friend told me all of this... :sarcasticeyeroll:

IRT to Bex, Nah, it's not just celebrities, apparently, everybody's got to hug everybody.

Why is porn tacky? Content over packaging? No idea.

A friend of mine (female) had a porn tape from a boyfriend called something like "Climatic Expressions #33," and it was too funny for two reasons, one, it got boring so we fast forwarded the 'action' and watching climatic expressions at high speed was amusing and two, they really tried to make it interesting, a redhead by the fire, a blonde by the hot tub, a brunette in the ski lodge, etc., etc., but it made me realize that the expression, "we're all the same in the dark," was true.

I'd like to add that at this point I have taken my Spider Jerusalem action figure and tied his wrist to my Cassidy (from Preacher) action figure just so I can work out which positions are feasible with them and which aren't.

Read that and weep, internet. Weep!

I guess you also missed the memo about different levels of wrong.

You don't have to buy anything, because I'm not selling. Call me crazy, but I think it's wrong for someone to think they're great simply because of the appearance they were born with.

Hmm... I like to look my best, and I can't say I mind being admired. But I don't think looks will ever make me better than anyone else. I'm just perfectly comfortable in my own skin.

The trouble is, you can't fairly judge a person's reasons for enjoying/not minding/being comfortable being looked at. You don't know everything going on inside their head. Where exactly do you draw the line between ego and confidence?

Wrong is subjective, Joe. Few will argue against the wrongness of fucking a goat or shooting some random guy in the head (and those that do are probably mentally ill). Egotism, though, has never hurt anyone. A lot of people won't like the idea of such a thing being "wrong".

Drew, just so you know, we have the "Dispensing with Falsities" thread for engaging in repetitive arguments with Joe, and venting frustration with him. You'll enjoy it.
As Bex has said, there is a difference between ego and egotism. You two go and duke it out in "Falsities", and I'll see you there.

re: BR's horror at the idea of a porn-free Australia, and lara's concern about our fear of dog collars: I have said repeatedly it is a very sad thing sometimes to live in Australia.
If you want to buy X-rated videos, showing actual sex, you have to purchase them from Canberra. The irony we all enjoy is that is the home of our government. :sarcasticeyeroll:

I disagree. I think it leads to teenage girls sticking their fingers down their throats.

I think that's the opposite of ego, Joe. Those girls don't have any sense of self to be full of.

Being completely caught up in appearances (be the underlying thought "I'm gorgeous" or "I'm hideous") to the extent of not recognizing any value in other qualities isn't a matter of ego so much as misplaced priorities.

And someone can be an egotist without it being about looks. I'm better because I'm smarter. I'm better because I'm more athletic. I'm better because I have more money. Etc.

Right, but in this case egotism refers to how someone feels about their appearance. While eating disorders in and of themselves are the results of low self-esteem, they do not cause that low self-esteem in the first place.

Those girls are trying to look like someone else, or otherwise "fix" their appearances so that society will accept them.

I think this stems from society deeming it perfectly acceptable for a person to flaunt his or her looks and get by just on that. Or at least get better treatment.

As far as priorities go, I don't think this idea of misplaced priorities is incompatible with my own argument.

I would say its more the way girls think society wants them. Which is not the same thing at all. Its a thing to do with the girls perception more than actual reality. But seeing as I'm not privy to their thoughts, it is just speculation on my part.
