Most Male Population: Number of males per 100 females:

1. United Arab Emirates 214

China's #14 and India's #19. Hmm, so we know about China and India by what is the reason for the UAE's disparity?

Who's the biggest beer drinkers? Who has the highest amount of recorded arrests per 100000? You might be surprised at the rankings.

I'm not sure how they count population (citizens vs. residents), but the UAE would have a very high number of working men who live there but consider another country their permanent home. They don't necessarily bring families if they have them, but it's an especially good arrangement for someone who hasn't formed such attachments yet.
I belong to one of those families that does not speak to or see its members as often as we should,
but if someone needed anyone to fall on a sword for her, there would be a queue waiting to commit the deed.

Yeah, UK seems to suck at everything, and London is certainly one of if not the most expensive places to live in the World.

We have one of the highest teenage pregnancy rates in Europe as well.

But I still like it here (most of the time) :D

IRT Bex - Who knows how they get these figures but I think they were talking about births but perhaps not.

IRT Krazy - It's not meant to point out who sucks the most. It's about surprising numbers. Frankly, the UK has yet to make it on a "Who Sucks the Most" list, although Ireland's kicking your ass in some surprising areas.

You'll never guess who has the most heart attacks by 100,000. Or maybe you will.

I was surprised to learn the US spent the highest percentage of its GDP on health by a 4% margin. I thought the answer would be France, my husband thought Canada.

Who arrests the most people per 100,000? New Zealand.

Hmm, I know Scotland has a very high rate of heart attacks and average life expectancy is also correspondingly very low.

I know it wasn't supposed to be taken as "UK sux0r0z" we just seem to. Its sort of depressing knowing that in the time its taken America to become what it is, the UK has gone from ruling a 1/4 of the World to what it is now.

Don't feel bad, Krazy: at least you are up there with the big guys, which is more than can be said for Portugal. Once an Empire, and now totally out of the running.

Don't listen to Bex's rational reason: I'm going to run with the baby termination theory on the UAE. More rumour mongering, and less commonsense here. :witch:

What are the other liveable cities in Australia? They're always going on about Melbourne being on that list but never mention the others. Bendigo? Dubbo? Yackandandah?

Most heart attacks? I'm betting one of those small islands like Samoa or Tobago, where everybody eats lamb flaps all the time. (It was on TV last night.)
Biggest beer drinkers? Mexico, Ireland, England or Australia. (I will be ashamed if we aren't.)
Highest recorded arrests will be either a really poor country, or Singapore where you can be arrested for staring on public transport.

Economic freedom sounds good: but I think it's code for "buys a lot of useless stuff."

I'm proud to be second to Norway on gender development. My rad-fem :rooster: is as happy as a chick in the nest. What a nice index. :)

I'm not surprised. That's used to defend universal health care in Canada all the time. People here complain about their taxes, but people who have moved to the U.S. have said if you lump the cost of proper insurance and taxes together, you're paying about the same amount in the U.S. as in Canada.

Australian Cities and Their Rankings:

I'll post the Heart Attack Capital tomorrow but I will leave you with one last stat:

Well that explains the high health costs. But there are a lot of you.

New Zealand?! That's terribly sad.
Here, arrest rates per population go up for Aboriginal people the further into the country you go: where people are the poorest and most disadvantaged and drink and steal and fight. Maybe it's the same in NZ. :(

Sydney couldn't possibly be more liveable than Melbourne. :penguin:

Just one stat for today, ladies and gentlemen, I present the Heart Attack Capitals of the World (per 100,000):

I begin to wonder about the Scandanavian diet. It seems to me there are a lot of fish eating countries on the list.

Obviously, allowing gay weddings is destroying the sanctity of marriage and the nuclear family in Canada. :P

Canada isn't on the list of top 60 highest marriage countries. So that would lead me to believe that Canadians don't marry much. Less marriages = less divorce. Possibly, the most marriages in Canada take place among immigrants who may have more conservative views on divorce further reducing Canadian divorce rates.

Remember, Canada has a low marriage rate but still appears on the list of countries with the highest divorce rates worldwide

The only two countries of regular members (all 6 of us :D ) who's countries appear on the list of high marriage rates is Australia at #44 and the US at #15.

I could make a better argument that Canada's allowing gay marriage has resulted in a decline of marriage.

Stats are tricky things.

An even better argument than that would be that Canadians talk funny and smell only marginally better than President Bush's shit on Teriyaki Friday. And they're ugly.

*ahem* You are all going to The Naughty Mat now. And then you have to write at least three reasons each for not saying bad things about Canadians. Even French ones. And they are not to be funny. :eral:
I believe the Canadian government enabled gay marriage in a desperate attempt to raise their marriage rate. Too many divorces, not enough marriages, well, you can se where it's going.
lara's idea of people saying "oh noes, gay people can be married, marriage is completely spoiled for me, and I will have to give up the inheritance and support rights that marriage confers because gay people can have them too" does tickle my fancy.
I am very concerned about Finnish people's health. And the fact they seem to be more depressed than everyone else. I too, cannot believe Finnish people are murdering each other. It makes me even more concerned about the welfare of Blackwing though. I thought she was just pissed off by Joe: but maybe something more sinister and tragic has occurred.

The heart attack thing: yep. Heart disease got everyone on my mother's side of the family, and more than a few of dad's. It's the food. Nothing good comes from eating offal. I seriously believe the presence of so many Irish genes correlates directly with Australia's heart attack rate.

Of course marriage is low in the UAE: there aren't any women.

I have a simple explanation for the high marriage/divorce rate here. Everyone thinks marriage ia about weddings. When that is over, and the horrible stress of the $50 000 day is over, the relationship is in tatters and they can't be bothered hanging around together. Very common for marriages to last under a year.

That would be French Canadians.

No, that would be the cohabitation without marriage. (Seriously, common-law relationships in Quebec are far more prevalent than the rest of Canada.)

I think Eral has a point about weddings. Blah blah blah my special day once-in-a-lifetime blah-de-blah perfect perfect perfect. Makes me feel sick. I get the impression that a lot of young women figure if the wedding doesn't live up to their princess fantasy or cost as much as a down payment on a house, they've been cheated, or that if some detail is off, it means the whole thing is ruined (including possibly the relationship). And they don't understand that after the fantasy, there's a whole reality of making a life together. (Never had a princess fantasy, our entire wedding cost less than a lot of women spend on the dress alone, and we don't regret a thing about it. We threw a big party for our friends and families and had a great time celebrating. What else is necessary?)

I think the divorce rate in Britain is approximately 2 in every 3 marriages, which does seem high to me and we are 20th on the list.

BTW In British law, "common-law" relationship confers no legal status on a couple contrary to what many people believe here. And well since last year we have civil unions for gay people that confers all the same legal status as a marriage except they couldn't quite get themselves to call it marriage but it remains to be see what if any effect it has on the divorce rate.

In Japan they are expecting a boom in the divorce rate, because of a change in the super-annuation laws which entitles women to half of their husband's super: waaaay more than they have been getting up til now. The prognosis is, all the women who have only been staying with their husbands because they have no alternative, will up-stakes and skedaddle come June 1st. There were people who were against the changes because of it.

I do wonder why Japanese men are not nicer to their wives.:huh1:

Fine. Three unfunny reasons not to say bad things about Canada....

1. They are really sensitive about Americans making fun of them since everyone knows Canada is the USA's bitch....at least when they aren't busy being the UK's bitch.

2, They have a hard time understanding insults directed at them due to all the hockey-related head injuries.

3. Canadians are the scum of the earth and, therefore, not worthy of the time and thought necessary to adequately describe their badness.
