This poor family had to look all those disgusting hypocrites in the eye while praising their dead wife and mother.
Same old story. Woman fights her way through the ranks to become the "first" woman at something, and ends up being a poster girl for the "Why she should be the Only" campaign.

I believe that collegial support is essential to jobs that are stressful and drain your emotional responses. Policemen have very strong bonds with each other, because they need them. Ditto for soldiers.
Sadly, a woman is going to be denied this if she gets too far. She has to know her place is underneath the blokes. Literally. We love nothing better then tearing down women in positions of responsibilty: we have to show their instability, and ditheriness and incompetence.
There is something deeply saddening that so many women pioneers end up wrecks.
Sometimes I think we should just abandon government and all the institutions: the personal cost is too high, and the benefit seems minimal. Maybe Virginia was right: we should stay outsiders and watch them crumble in on themselves.

I have thought about it some more, and decided I'm glad women broke into medicine, because now we have anaesthetics during childbirth and hysteria is no longer considered a disease of women.
Ditto for law: because now we have divorce and property settlement.

Can't find a reason yet for bothering with the police and army, though. :'(

I told my husband about this story and he blamed the "cop" culture.

We had a female astronaut who just went nuts (I think I linked the story), she drove 900 miles in diaper to intercept her love rival and I don't recall anyone saying anything except she was a nut and a small percentage stated that a 40+ women was obviously going to lose out to a 30 yr old.

I'd like to add that at this point I have taken my Spider Jerusalem action figure and tied his wrist to my Cassidy (from Preacher) action figure just so I can work out which positions are feasible with them and which aren't.

Read that and weep, internet. Weep!

I think the poor woman's treatment was because of cop culture, too. (Your Frank is a very astute man. You have my permission to hang around with him.)

The astronaut: too bizarre. But if I apply Feminist Deconstruction to the story, she was behaving as patriarchal women are supposed to behave - going crazy over love, being desolated by rejection, having no value for herself than as the object of desire. Therefore, we don't have to look at her achievements -she already "proves" the instability of women. :smart:

Not really the same league, but they made a whole fuss last week that for the first time ever there would be a woman commentating on a football match. Women presenting sports shows themselves has been going on for years.

We've had women sports commentator for awhile. I don't follow sports particularly but I know they have run into sexual harassment problems.

Some sports icon tried to drunkenly kiss one female sports commentator recently on camera then apologized and went to, wait for it, rehab. He did look like a right old fool. Maybe Joe Namath?

As to the astronaut, I think everybody was more concerned with NASA's screening processes than women's inherent hysteria. I'm sure someone had to make the argument but nobody mainstream.

Edit: It was Joe Namath

Is rehab the new ten Hail Marys and an Our Father?

A woman commentating on a sports show is a bit like delivering a sermon: very big deal. It means she must know something about the sport: hence the amazement. :sarcasticeyeroll:

I should rename this thread Feminist Stomping Ground.

Hmm. Can't recall the last Dad who said this.

And then there's this:

http://www.theage.com.au/news/national/rud...9601670561.html

1. Labour has been bagging the new IR laws. Here's the wife of the Labour leader using them and proving Labour is right. Rudd is being presented as a hypocrite and not Master over his wife.
2. Rudd's wife is rich in her own right. There's a suggestion that Rudd isn't Manly because of this. See above.
3. Therese Rein will have to divest her interest in the Australian arm of her business should Rudd become PM, not because of conflict of interest, but because she won't be a supportive wife if she doesn't. There are some people saying she shouldn't :o because that will be a step backwards for women.
Umm, is this confusing to anyone else?

We have quite a few pols with rich wives, invariably there's some mini scandal lurking in the investment portfolio but rarely anything major nobody seems to hold their rich spouses against them. Australia is obviously more masculine than the US.

Re: First Story: This idea of the stay at home mother is a modern idea. I'm chalking her choice to a personal desire or a political explanation. Frankly, more of us (both genders) should make that choice. Mothers from all background usually didn't have a lot to do with their children.

I think plenty of fathers have rejected career options where they would travel or be away anymore than they already are. My husband is not searching for careers where he's away a 100 days a year. I don't think he's unique.

"Kevin comes first." Awwww. :yuck: Tammy Winette strikes again.
CONFLICT OF INTEREST. That's what it's about.

Rudd is gunning to be PM, so the Liberals are looking to trash him at every opportumity. It's a game, "Make Rudd look bad." Otherwise we wouldn't know about her.
EDIT: there appears to be a fair bit of malice in the coverage - cartoonists' caricatures of her are very unflattering, and she is being portrayed as stupidly damaging his credibility, or actively emasculating him. I guess that explains the Tammy Winette impersonation.
:bex:

I completely applaud Jackie Kelly's retirement, particularly as she gets a whopping great pension which should help pay for the kids' education very nicely. But the point is, all those other pollies in Canberra ARE staying away from their families 100 days a year. Why aren't they feeling it?
I'd be really unimpressed with a spouse whose job required that: I want to know how come all those women put up with it?
