HAH! I say again, HAH! Still had problems running Caesar after the fixing of the drivers. Mr.FPS began suggested the game was buggy. :o ![]() We have 3 computers - Big Boy (the new Tower of Power), Little Boy, a nice little Silverstone box, and the Former Tower of Power which is mine. While waiting for the adjustments to be finalised, I loaded Caesar on Little Boy, and it ran perfectly. I suggested the problem was because the Former Tower of Power is no longer up to speed, to which Mr.FPS responded with :o :knight:. Well, well well. We loaded Trend Microsoft onto Little Boy and lo and behold, Little Boy is now a gibbering basketcase who is having to be ghosted back to normal. I knew something was wrong when a little "Language bar" icon appeared on the task bar - I thought it had been caused by the malware. Nope, it's The Portent of Doom by Trend Micro. There is something very wrong when a program you pay $120 for stuffs up your computer so comprehensively. It certainly does identify viruses and trojans- but appears to wipe out other features like "rungame". Mr.FPS is a little distressed just now, as he is anxiously nursing Little Boy back to full capacity, and is unwilling to join me in a fatwa on Trend Micro. I think there should be. Nortons, by any other name. |

The current PC I'm working on has simply been *invested* with viri and all sorts of nasties ever since I got on the internet half an hour ago. And yet I refuse to install a virusscanner. That says something about virusscanners. I will clean out this comp and unplug the internet cable; just use it to play a few games and get some work done. |

We quit selling Norton at work, and sell only Kaspersky http://www.kaspersky.com/ I have it on mine and it hasn't slowed it up any, they newer versions offer to install 'other' features, but if you say no dont' install them it doesn't install them unlike other virus scanners that I have seen. |

I have been forced to install a version of Nortons, well that is to say, Mr.FPS installed it despite my protests. It is a 2006 version, badged under the Symantec label, and my game is running without problems, but it keeps starting up virus scans without my permission and trying to stop me logging on to the InterNet. I shall point out the virtues of Kapersky. I very much like the idea of an anti-virus program that does what you tell it. Mr.FPS has never heard of Bex's anti-virus. :( |

Trend Micro, I thought Norton was owned by Symantec these days but that's another thing. Well, one question springs to mind, did you have Norton and this game co-existing in harmony before the trojan? And if so, then Norton failed on one level, and it would suggest to me something else is the problem, but I'd need more info for accurate diagnosis. I reinstalled a pc (my old one, for my mother) and I installed AVG Free and ZoneAlarm I do think for some people they are better than letting them loose with nothing. Having seen fast PCs brought to their knees by viruses and stuff where format and reinstall is the only viable option they are mandatory imo for the majority of users. But yes, they need to hook into the bowels of an OS to be effective, and hence require resources and slow it down somewhat and none are perfect, but the better ones are minimally intrusive and just get on with the job. Norton Total tooth whitening Plaque protection Internet 360 Security, from what I have seen of it, has gone down the pretty Windoze route of trying to give pretty menus and stuff to n00bs and take away all those configuration decisions from users and stuff and has become bloated and inefficient. But since the core business for Symantec is in the Enterprise environment where gaming is a tertiary concern if that, it doesn't surprise me it causes some problems. |

I was allegedly protected by Mr.FPS' work anti-virus (name unknown)and the firewall before The Fall. Mr.FPS installed Trend to clean it up. Nortons under Symantec is better, but I think we know how I feel about abandoning technology grudges. Trend Micro identifies cookies as trojans. Scaremongering, that's all it is.I shall point out AVG to him as well. He respects you, Krazy, so your recommendation should have weight. |

When we get an infected computer in at work, we boot it with a Bart CD, and run KAV, rootkitrevealer, Autoruns, adaware(?) runscanner designed to run off a Bart, and lately started running BitDefender also. You can find comparasons of various AV programs here. http://www.av-comparatives.org/ |

It's sad when your computer starts making decisions for you. Flashback to HAL.
:o After a week of having to re-start my pute 2 or 3 times a morning because Nortons has decided that until the subscription is up-dated, I shouldn't be accessing my trusted sites, like the newspaper and CT, Mr.FPS thinks we might return to VET. It's an Australian program, he knows it, there's support. He was going to re-new the subscription to Nortons. You saved me with that link, Krazy. EDIT: according to underdog's list, Trend Micro is the best, <_< Nortons comes after, and VET is third. He's going to stick with Nortons. Maybe it will be better when it's renewed.

I doubt it. We cringe whenever someone insists on NAV, pretty much only sold KAV for the last few years. some of them on that list use the KAV engine and one of their own engines, and just resell it under their own name, thats why some are a little higher then KAV. |

Yeah I doubt it too, unless the update fixes some horrendous problem with the scanning engine that has hitherto gone unnoticed/unfixed. It will most likely just include a more up to date virus database. I would try disabling some of the more advanced settings, sorry dubious techniques like heuristic scanning (that attempts to identify virus like behaviour) and see if that improves stability or uninstall the thing completely if you haven't coughed up for the subscription yet and try something else. |

Now I have a legal copy, it is not interfering with my life. Yet. <_< The box has advertising saying "prevent unknown threats from attacking your computer" and assume that is the program that shut down all those computers in America. (Good tactic, 'eliminate any programs not designed by us.') It sounds good, doesn't it? But when you think about it, it means "shut down everything you don't recognise." And it is only a computer program. As those folks with the netnanny program found out. Mr.FPS is being extremely contumely. He says it's Norton's or Trend Micro. Nortons doesn't hate Caesar, so until I'm bored with Caesar, I am a thrall to Nortons. It's underdog's fault. |
