Have you ever played? Do you still?

I've been through one campaign, and we already have three more games planned (the third of which I will DM). Video games don't even compare.

How do you handle ability score rolls? I have to admit that after using NWN's point-buy system, I don't like the "you get what you roll" setup. I guess I'm not hardcore enough yet.

I have played PnP in the past, not now and haven't for some while. Aside from the Computer RPGs, where I roleplay a Powergaming Munchkin to perfection (if that's not tautology) :D , I'm involved in a forum based Warhammer 40k campaign that started recently.

It was a bit of a surprise to be asked as I'm a total n00b at this forum based way of doing it, and it requires skill at writing and creativity which in turn is requiring copious amounts of thought! Very strenuous. A lot harder than saying, I hitz the big goblin with my pointy stick+1. Oh yeah! I rollzed a 12 for damage. Is it ded coz that looks like its heart what iz on the end of my pointy stick+1? (can you tell I'm a pro at goblinicide?)

From what I've seen of 3.x campaigns, point buy is the only sensible way to go about it, just because of the way ability scores and their effects are handled, although it is much more susceptible to min-maxing than 2nd ed, just because almost any character needs a dump stat to be effective.

I never have myself, but back in the Dark Ages (late '80s) lots of my friends were hardcore D'n'Ders. Advanced D&D rules, a believe they played, and yeah, they suffered the rolls and played the characters. There was always some bitterness, especially when someone really keen got killed off early. I liked that, because it ended the habit of almost my entire group of friends in uni making dates to find empty classrooms so they could game. Some of my high school friends were gamers, too, but I don't think they ever found an adequate DM. One had vendettas that he played out during gaming, one made all the quests far too complex, one was too hack-and-slash, etc. Quite glad I never got involved in that, but the uni group seemed a bit more grown up.

I played back in 80-81, had one good dm who played fairly, if he killed you or crippled you would somehow find a way to bring you back, although not easily. He had some variations on fairy tales, had a section on Dune world, transported you to some future worlds, where we played some space combat board games, and you were always finding bits and pieces of different quests laying around that you had to try to figure out what was going on.

As for rolling we used 4 D6'd and picked the best 3 die for your stat, so you usualy ended up with slightly better ones, and you could move the numbers around, but not move points around like the generation screen in BG.

I'm currently playing 3.5 DnD with my sister Linda, brother-in-law Ken, and Craig and Terry, a married couple. Ken is currently DMing, and we're at the tail end of his campaign, where I play a CG halfling rogue named Cora Greenbottle, my sis plays a NG Elven Wizard named Eryn Lasgalen, Craig plays a CN mute human fighter named Bronx, and Terry plays a LN Human Samurai named Gavis. During his campaign we got to take out a temple of Nerull.

Hopefully our session tommorow will be the end of Ken's campaign and then we can resume Craig's campaign.

Heh. I just realized that when I "throw" in BG, I never move the points around. That's cheating, for me. Those geeks musta rubbed off on me.

Never played PnP.

Most of the people I hung around with in University were LARPers. Those of us who weren't had a code worked out to indicate that they were spending too much time talking about their gaming and needed to get grounded in reality for a bit, at least.

I did once act in one of their games (a human NPC, as it were). I suckered everyone into believing I was an innocent victim of the badguy they were trying to defeat and managed to flee the scene. I had actually been driven quite insane and would do everything in my power to carry on his works if I escaped (sort of a Stockholm syndrome effect, with voodoo). So you could say I won, even though I wasn't playing.

I wonder if they ever ran the sequel to that game.
I belong to one of those families that does not speak to or see its members as often as we should,
but if someone needed anyone to fall on a sword for her, there would be a queue waiting to commit the deed.

Oh yes, I remember those LARPs, that and that annoying Assassin game at university.

But also, I remember those text-based multi-used dungeons we played as well where you had to telnet to some server :gramps: . It was kinda cool being able to go round as a party and kill things together (considering when it was - a little clue), but after a while it got boring. The same limited descriptions of the death being repeated does take the fun out of the "lulz I killzed it" moment.
And every time someone levelled up you'd suddenly get a million *** GRATZ! *** flash up on the screen. Some things never change it seems...

I have played 3rd Edition Dungeons and Dragons, as well as Shadowrun and World of Darkness.

Some GMs I've had allowed rerolls, though usually we just rolled more dice than were necessary for the stat and discarded the lowest, skewing the scores a little high.
