Meaning Alaska?

Ravens are interesting. I love the info about the M&Ms. I once had one chase me around the beach (I was a child), trying to give back the page it had taken out of my book (literally).

In Nelson, B.C., there was a raven who occasionally spoke to me as I was walking to work. I discovered this nifty little back street next to the gully/slope down to the highway with, like, two or three houses on it and no one around in the morning, and was quite baffled one day by this voice. I was having a heck of a time figuring out what it was saying, and I couldn't locate it. Then I realized it was coming from up high in a big tree, and it was a raven, looking down at me and speaking something approximating English.

After that, I always spoke back to it.

Ravens are awesome. They were Odin's eyes and ears when it came to information.

In the neighbourhood where I grew up, there were bluejays (also corvids) who had learned to mimic the sound of a rusty clothesline squeak, and seemed to be passing it through the family line. I always thought that was nifty.

Alaska, yeah, but also Canada and Washington. A raven the size of a small turkey thunked onto the hood of the (parked) car while I was in the Yukon Territories, and it just stood there and stared through the windshield at me for a bit. It was cool, but gave me the willies. I can understand why they feature so heavily in Norse and Pacific Northwest mythology.

Put Olga to sleep this morning after listening to her wheeze all night. This month, it can be over now, yes?

So sorry, Inky. That's one of the hardest decisions anyone can ever have to make.

Oh, and of course she was sprightly and bouncy when I took her in to the vet. Her wound just wasn't getting any better, though, and she wasn't drinking enough and her appetite had slacked off and last night I thought she was going to die on me and I'd taken pain meds for my foot so I couldn't take her anywhere then and ugh. I'm waiting to find out that my identity's been stolen or my store has burned down or something.

When I went in with my old dog Wolf, he couldn't stand up on his own and he couldn't breathe properly, but he still looked at me as though he wasn't ready to go, and I will never get over that.

My ferret, Slinky, was the most recent I've had to take in, a few years back. She was convulsing so badly there was no question of it being the right decision. She'd had seizures before (vet was never able to identify a cause), but they were always brief. This one lasted hours, and it didn't seem she was coming out of it. She was also a very, very old lady by that point.

Still, it's hard to be the caretaker and make the decisions for a creature who relies on you for everything and will for its entire life and often its death as well....

Ah, there we go. Apparently my grandmother is having cardiac complications following her knee replacement surgery.

Thank you, Bex. Even when she's looked like hell, she didn't seem like she was ready to go. I feel awful, but I didn't feel like it was fair to make her keep struggling with this, especially since she seemed to be spiralling down very slowly.

:tp: :(

Regullus went through this early December. You never feel you've done the right thing. If you wait, and the animal suffers you feel terrible for procrastinating: if you go ahead and the animal seems well, you feel like a murderer. You did what seemed right to you, and now you need to tell yourself it was right.

Hope your grandmother comes good.
:o Umm, and now might be a good time to have the wiring in your store checked. Just a precaution.

Oh, Inky, it does stop. It comes in spurts, and then you get a break. You don't know when the break will start, but eventually, you realize you're having it, 'round about the time you stop dreading the ring of the telephone.

Love ya, kid.

Ah Inky, :( it's never easy, I'm sorry. I'm sure you made the right decision.

Hopefully your grandmother will be ok.

It does seem to come in waves, doesn't it? :grouphug:

I'd like to add that at this point I have taken my Spider Jerusalem action figure and tied his wrist to my Cassidy (from Preacher) action figure just so I can work out which positions are feasible with them and which aren't.

Read that and weep, internet. Weep!

I found out that my optical drive wasn't broken, it was my BIOS after all, so now I have two working drives and an IT guy I need to have words with.

I also found out this morning that the $2400 I deposited at the bank a week ago is not where it should be. Where it is, I do not know. I am waiting for the urge to throw molotov cocktails to die down before I contact the bank.

The Feng Shui of your karma is seriously out of whack. I am going to look up "getting rid of demons" and we can conduct a ceremony straight away.
Seriously bad week.

That doesn't make much sense to me.

If the first drive was working, and then didn't. Who pissed about with the BIOS to disable the ide/sata controller it was connected to in the first place if the BIOS was then at fault?

And presumably you have a record of depositing the money - so it isn't lost?

(Yes, I do note the fundamental difference between mine and Eral's answer here)

Yes, mine is sympathetic and funny. :t2:

I have found an absolute raft of measures you can take to get positive energy flowing through your house, get rid of demons and ghosts, and help you win the lottery. :elvis: :titter:

I am making a seperate thread, so when Inky gets back from sorting out the bank, she can have something amusing to read. :-* :tp:

Positive energy already flows through everybody's house if they have an electricity supply.

Well.
I have decided to give up teaching. This means not only giving up the work I love, but my Cat of the Censorious Schoolmarm. :eeks:
It is deeply, horribly depressing. Life crisis. (I'm sure I just went through one a decade ago. Is it really that time again? :( )

So.
I have been hiding out in the house for several weeks now, trying to work it through, but not getting terribly far. I'm a mess.

I've been putting on a very brave face here, though. In fact, CT is one of the few places I feel safe to go. Nobody has a problem with me here, it is OK to be me.

But lately, I have been feeling it is not OK.
I have sensed irritation and exasperation in replies to my ramblings.
I have had to :bullwhip: in response to :ld:. :(
The free flow of my idle chatter has been checked at regular intervals by carping and nit-picking. :hornet:
On Wednesday, in the Pancake thread, it all became too much for me. :ambulance:
I snapped. :hanky: OK, completely over-reacted. I do that.
Because I often get the feeling no-one is really reading anything I say, :ph43r: I went a bit overboard on alerting you all to my feelings. Sorry about that. :sorry:

Some of us remember The Great Flame War, but for those who don't, it occurred because I had no idea how much I was annoying a modder we know as :tsog:. I blithely engaged in rapid-fire banter with him, winding him up to red-hot :rooster:. It all ended tragically. I lost, he won - though I maintain that if the deus exmachina hadn't taken place the outcome would have been different. (It's hard to lose, what can I say. They were very bad winners as well. ;D )

Since then, I have been very keen to not annoy anyone to incandescent rage without knowing in cyberspace. In RL, it seems completely impossible, and I'm giving up on that, and becoming a recluse.
Here at CT, I know there are rules. If you don't like someone, it's your problem, not theirs, and you can't sack them and ruin their lives, which I like very much. You come out and say you can't stand them, and then treat them with scrupulous respect while pointing out your abhorrence of their views. You can say all manner of rude things as long as you don't get personal. It's very civilised and enormously freeing.

I wouldn't want to drive anyone away from CT because they were having difficulty tolerating me. Nor do I want to stop being myself.
I would really prefer an open avowal of true feelings, because it's better out than in. By all means, then return to :ld: if :bash: isn't your style, I will cheerfully accept all slings and arrows. When I'm feeling better, I might even rouse up to chuck a few about myself. It will be fun.

So.

How about it?

Yeeessss... that would be rawther trying. :tp:

But I'm just going to carry on blithely oblivious to most annoyances, as per normal....
