It all looks lovely! Sylvia looks great. Very sleek. I want a fish pond like that except it gets too cold.

Yeah, aboveground ponds do not work year-round in climates such as ours. If they're small enough though, they can be moved inside, or they can be drained and the fish overwintered in an aquarium. An in-ground pond need only be 2-3 feet deep to probably not freeze solid, and you can use a cattle trough heater to keep it from completely icing over top (fish need an airhole). One of these days.... Nice pics! |

Arctic goldfish?
You could have a water-lily pond, maybe? The biggest concern would be the pot cracking: but if it was in the ground? Water plants die back in winter, and grow again when the temperature rises. What about Japanese water plants? Do they survive in freezing temperatures? (Going to google.) AHA! http://www.pondplants.com/ihl-1.html http://www.webbsonline.com/wintertips.html Apparently cold weather makes fish even prettier. That explains why the fish darkened in colour dramatically once they were in the pond. Is New Hampshire close to Virginia? http://www.ext.vt.edu/pubs/envirohort/426-042/426-042.html http://www.hintsandthings.co.uk/kennel/fishpond.htm Thank you for the compliments on Sylvia's coat. I try to be a good mother. :) |

One year I tried a water garden (no fish) and it was quite nice but there were two problems: One, the dogs kept drinking the water and making it kinda scummy and low in volume and two, there was some mosquito thing going on, the name eludes me. I did have a water lily as well as multiple other water plants. I was not terribly successful w/the water lily.
:( I do want to try again but I figured w/ a baby/toddler around, it was best to wait til she was older. I love the sound of fountains and the sight of water gardens in hot weather. :yup:, I am very of your fish pond.

Yes, but how did you?
I am somewhat concerned to realise that it did not occur to me till after asking how to wonder why you wanted to. I am going to hate breaking in a new shrink. Oh and thanks Regullus. I love my fish and lily pond too. |

I don't think we need to move any already existing pics or pic links, Nibby, but weren't you getting a haircut? Or any pictures you would like to post. Of course, if you have any pics with almost a whole pen in your mouth that would be nice too. |

With my dashing good looks. nah, I don't know. I just can. Maybe it's the same thing that can let me drink a pint of water in about 2 and a half seconds. |

 To both of you. If Sylvia was a few years younger, there would be no fish. Even now we watch her very closely. The other day she showed a flash of her youthful joie de kill-everything-small-you-can-find and raised her paw as if about to scoop, but then she went off for a nap instead. When she goes to the great fluffy blanket in the sky, I shall have to find a cat that won't have an eye for my tadpoles. If I googled cats who don't like fish, I wonder if anything would come up? I would like to ask where did the pen go, but fear a horrible run of "deep throat" joeks, and well, let's not. Really. |
