Watership Down isn't a little kids' book. I went to see it because I loved the book, and the cinema was pretty much full of adolescents and adults. Just because it's a cartoon people think it's a kids' film: but it's a cartoon because in those pre-CGI days it would have been damn hard to get rabbits to talk and look real while they did it. The film is almost faithful to the book. It's been a long time since I saw it. I don't recall the extra character Burgundy mentions, but I have a vague memory of being really miffed by the ending (you could tell the producers had a conversation that went "ooh, how long is it? better wind up here then!" )and death of one character, who was, of course, my favourite and who was not supposed to die. Land before Time. Yes, that's it. The mother does die, but the baby bronto doesn't weep in quite the plaintive way Bambi and Simba do, and joins up with his cute buddies really quickly and it's possible to let the trauma go. It is extremely difficult to find kids' films without scary bits. I find DVD's the best option, so I can fast forward or suggest a game of soccer in the park. I am very fond of "Mulan": yay, woman fighting gender roles: and when I found Mulan2, I bought it. In it the Emperor sends his daughters off to be married to three princes in Korea. They end up deciding not to go to Korea, and happily run off with men they like: and while I liked that theme, it made me cross because NO WAY could a woman have done that in China at that time, and instead of concentrating on the conflicts there - like the conflict for Mulan in 1 about being the person she wanted to be- they had this stupid plot by the dragon to stop Mulan and Shen getting married. My nieces however, liked Mulan2 much better than one. "Shen gets cross all the time in the first one, and shouts. he's nicer in the second one."

I absolutely loved Mulan. It's still one of my favourite Disney animation films, if not my most favourite. I haven't seen Mulan 2 though (I didn't even know there was a Mulan 2). The voice of Mushu was done by a well known Dutch television host, and he really did a brilliant job. I really laughed my ass off seeing this film. http://nl.youtube.com/watch?v=RsbELZlig5w |

Used to be alright; what happened?

I was referring to Violet, Eral. (If that still rings any bells) And what are you talking about, all cartoons are suitable for kids. Have you never seen Fritz the Cat? :) |

No, I don't remember Violet. Just as well, really. I explain this as I probably approved of adding female characters. Umm,I said people think a film is appropriate for kids if it's a cartoon. People make cartoons like Fritz the Cat to teach them a lesson. Nibby, that's a whole new world. I take it the actors doing the Dutch listen to the English voices - The Dutch man sounds just like Eddie Murphy. I think Donny Osmond sings "To be A Man" better, though. He punched himself in the stomach to get authenticity for that. Don't watch Mulan 2. Their characterisation of Muushu is terrible. The bloke sounds like Eddie Murphy, but he's written badly. "Blame Canada." (Sorry, Canadians.) The rest of the movie was too potty-mouth for me. Mr.FPS loved it. |

Yeah, some of the voices are very similar. I think it's a wonderful song BTW. |
