Our little family has signed up to participate in Earth Hour, which started in Sydney, Australia, last year. If any of you feel you want to make a statement about climate change -- and heck, light pollution, too -- I encourage you to sign up. And if you're signing up anyway, why not sign up through Katya's personal Earth Hour page? Here's her url: http://www.earthhour.org/user/0IhM Now let the global warming/Earth Hour debate begin. I'm kinda looking forward to maybe being able to see some stars that night, and enjoying the excitement of the dark with my four-year-old, plus maybe teaching a lesson about stewardship. I'm fairly certain that some day she'll look back at the way we treat the world in disbelief. (edited to include the url. ) |

I am not keen on sitting in the dark for an hour.
:( The electricity company enables me to do this on a regular basis, and while the activity Mr.FPS and I usually engage ourselves with is fun, neither of us has the stamina for a whole hour of it. Nonetheless,I went downstairs and discussed joining Earth Hour with Mr.FPS. He has heard of it, and said he is more than willing to turn off the lights for an hour. Me: "Right. Well let's get started turning off appliances in standby." Him: "We have to leave the TV in standby, to keep it at the right temperature." Me:"10% of our electricity bill is appliances on standby." Him: "Oh, they're not using very much." So, he's more than happy to participate in Erath hour, but not actually change any of his habits. :banghead: I expect I won't have very much success with my plan to replace our halogen lights. |

Sneak up on him. Start turning some things off and change the bulbs he won't notice right away, then inch it into his life. And what kind of TV needs to be kept at the "right temperature"? |

Oh, please don't make me try to explain his views. He has an unnatural attachment to appliances. It's an LCD screen. He runs it through a digital set-top box, and had to spend quite some time fixing the settings of the channels etc. It can only be turned off completely at the wall. I just tried turning off the "stand-by" and you can still turn it on from the remote. He has agreed to turn off his computer monitors. But he said he was giving up smoking , too. I shall research replacing halogen lights, nonetheless. EDIT: apparently, if I buy low wattage 12V ones, that will be good. We Do Not Have The Technology yet to replace halogens with LEDs. By the way, has Katya developed a penchant for our spooky smileys, or is it a coincedence? |

Thanks, Bex! It's neat to see Katya's widening circle of influence. She's got four signed up now -- grandma, an aunt, an uncle, and you. Cool! |

So today... I told my daughter there were lots more people signed up now for Earth Hour, and she figured that was because of her :) I told her, well, some of them. She has five people attached to her now! |

Now I have to think up an hour's worth of things to do with a four-year-old in the dark with no computer, TV, etc.... We'll go for a walk and maybe to the park. That'll kill at least half an hour, maybe 45 minutes, depending on the weather. And then I think we'll all snuggle up in mommy and daddy's bed and tell stories. Yeah. Hopefully. :ph43r: |

How did it all go? We were at his mum's place: two TVs playing the same channel, heating on and everyone wearing t-shirts. <_< Lights on only in the occupied rooms, though. :) |

It was nice. We turned everything off -- well, we didn't unplug the clocks or the fridge, stove and microwave, but things with off switches got turned off -- and went to the park, where another family we know also happened to be observing Earth Day. Of course, the lights in the park are on timers and weren't switched off, but oh well. Then we walked along the street and noticed that many people had their lights out. We went in the backyard and looked at the stars -- I think there was less other light in the sky. Seemed like it to me. Lots of candles and stuff in other people's houses. I'll watch the news tonight to see how it went in the city. |

This being my brother and SIL's last night here before heading back to New Jersey, we had to go to my Grandma's for one final family gathering. I wasn't sure how the participation would go, but it turned out fine. My whole family turned everything off and sat together in the dark for an hour. We talked, ate some Jell-O, and my cousin Michelle took silly digital pictures of everyone which turned out surprisingly clear with her flash. That was four households in total, since our place was all shut down before we left, and my Mom's and definitely my brother's would have been quite powered down as well. |

Sounds nice. It's nice when you're family surprises you in a positive way. We had a nice nature day. Earlier, we went to a provincial park for the maple syrup festival. We had pancakes, then got a wagon ride over to the old farm where they do interpretive tours of the sugar bush. They showed us maple-syrup making through the ages, then Katya got what she'd been looking forward to -- maple sugar candy -- and we played on some hay bales and looked at the farm animals. Then a tour of the 100-year-old farmhouse, which has all been restored and furnished appropriately. Then we took the wagon back to the car and drove over to another area where there's a kids' farm and a big barn with slides and stuff in it -- the play barn. Katya was right out in the car on the way home! We had a great day. |

Katya wanted to post something in her Earth Hour thread. Bex, yours is the only Coffeetalk sign-up that worked, but Reg, you tried, so this is for you, too:

Katya, thank you for telling us about Earth Hour, and making us think about ways we can look after our world. Even though I didn't sign up to your page, I made changes to the things I do because of you. You are an Earth Saver. Here are some of my most favourite smileys. How many do you like too?

After the cyclone
two days ago, Melbourne is continuing to save energy as power is still out to many areas. (I said the electricity gives me ample opportunity to sit in the dark, and I never lie.) Two people were killed in the storm, and an electicity company worker was killed while trying to restore power yesterday. :o :( Energy conservation is the subject of a lot of the stories in the paper today. Our state government is currently pondering plans to improve transport and traffic: and roads vs rail are big discussion points. One of the stories began: "Report shows we can save energy, and reduce emissions just by doing what we are presently doing." Well, that's good news, I thought to myself. Imagine, us being so far along as to be able to achieve that. On reading further, I found out that by continuing to use coal power, developing geo-sequestration and clean coal power, and with everyone turning off their lights when they don't need them, we are going to be ahead of everybody. <_< O RLY? I thought to myself. Reading further, I discovered this view was being put forward by the coal companies of our state. At the very end of the article there was a quote from a scientist suggesting that coal companies probably shouldn't fund reports and present extremely fatuous hypotheses as facts. As in this case. I am so worried about our future. :( |
