Gale on Lake Superior

Today the rain had ended and I was standing on a tall bluff overlooking the bay of Lake Superior at Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore being buffeted by cold 50 mph winds. These were not gusts but constant roaring winds. I could hardly keep upright and it was almost impossible to keep my camera steady! The howl was so loud that nobody could have heard me scream even if they were standing beside me.

In these photos (click on the thumbnails for full size) you cannot really tell how high the breakers are except if you look at the size of those virgin spruce trees on the cliff and compare. NOAA (National Weather Service) from Marquette reported that the waves were building as high as 22 feet from Munising to Crisp Point.

In the last photo, I was looking at a swift river that empties into Lake Superior at the shore. The river was running backwards, forced back by the high winds.

There were many hefty limbs blown down and a few snapped trees. It was stupid for me to be out there ---- but WHAT A RUSH!

NO boats. Any small craft would have been at the bottom! Even the freighters had to scramble for ports.

I never wanted to die quietly in bed, sweetly surrounded by family and friends. Me--I want to go quickly in an AURA of GLORY! :D

Beautiful, beautiful, beautiful.

Another nice group for desktop backgrounds.

I'm so glad you were brave enough to withstand the winds to take these pictures for us to see. Thanks. :)

Brave? El stupido is more like it... (Heh heh) I've been known to live a bit on the edge sometimes (not often). One of these days...KERPLUNK (or in other words, SPLAT!) and then... Posted Image

Thanks Mimtess. You're a nice lady. Posted Image
