PROPER GEARS Footwear First thing to check is your pair of shoes. It must be comfortable and durable enough. It should fit well and there should be no sharp edges that can hurt your feet. Sharp edges cause blisters too. If your shoes do not fit well on you, then you have a big problem! Remember that it's gonna be a long walk. In my climbs, I always bring a pair of back up shoes, which is usually a shoe completely made of rubber. I use these kind shoes in muddy trails or when crossing a river. Another reason why I carry this back up shoes is that I don't want my primary shoes (like the one below) to get wet often since it will not last long when it is often soaked in water or mud. It is hard to clean as well unlike the all-rubber ones, which you can simply clean using a water hose and a brush. FOR STEEP CLIMBS and the ROCKIES Shoes with hard rubber soles ![]() I used this one in climbing Mt. Gola in Bulacan and the Nalayag monoliths in Batangas. On Mt. Gola, there's a rock wall there. With these shoes, climbing up and down was easy. ![]() more on Mt. Gola When I joined the climb for the Nalayag monoliths, these shoes helped me climb the wall with ease. ![]() more on Nalayag monoliths The big difference between this shoe and the other common rubber shoes (jogging or running shoes) is that with its hard sole, a 2 square-inch of area where you can land the tip or the side of your shoe will be enough to give you a stable hold. Often, when climbing a rock wall, you can only rest your foot on protruding rocks or holes on the walls that can only give you a 2-square inch of an area where you can land your foot. With a rubber shoe, you need a larger area where your foot must rest on. Rubber shoes, having a much softer sole, will simply flex and slip away. Hard soles are like spikes that can press all the weight on a narrow point, somewhat burying itself into that narrow spot and giving you a much stronger hold. You can also step on rocks that are covered with algae, which are very slippery, such as those in the river when using these hard-soled shoes. Again, those hard soles, those blunt grooves, will act like spikes, burying itself into the spot. But if you will use a running shoe, which usually has a flexible and softer sole, the shoe will just slide over the algae-coated rocks, which will cause you to lose your balance and fall. See photo below; ![]() River along the trail leading to Tangadan falls. More info, click here. In our trek to Tangadan falls, one guy stepped on the wrong rock and lost his balance, banged his head on a huge rock beside him. Luckily, he survived but an eyewitness claimed he was not feeling okay after the accident. She even heard the sound of his head hitting the huge rock. When we reached the falls, he just kept silent and just sat on a spot there. He wasn't moving around compared to the rest who were busy enjoying the water and the view. He was indeed just trying to survive, probably praying that we head home as soon as possible, and was not enjoying the trek anymore. It was a simple mistake that ruined his chance to enjoy the trek. FOR WET AND MUDDY TERRAIN ![]() Many of the trekkers for our Dingalan Lighthouse tour were wearing rubber slippers such as those flip flops and havaianas. Unfortunately, it rained heavily. Water was rushing down the trail. They were having a hard time climbing the muddy and slippery slope. One lady, who was wearing a flip flop, lost her balance when her foot slipped. Her knee hit a rock as she fell down. She couldn't walk alone since then. Her friend helped her survive the descent nonetheless. Rubber slippers will often get buried in the mud. Your feet will even slip off when mud gets stuck on its topside. Mud on your slippers will make it hard for you to walk. Try this one above instead. It's made of rubber entirely. It will give your feet a good grip even when mud gets into it. This is totally water-proof and it's soft enough to prevent your feet from suffering blisters due to friction and sharp edges like those several badly designed shoes. I bought a branded one before, which was made of all-rubber too but it failed me since there were sharp edges that hurt my feet. It was so uncomfortable to wear. So far, this one in the above photo is one of the best trekking shoes I have. I got this from Farmer's Mall in Cubao for only P400. Surprisingly, the favorite as per my fellow hikers who are experienced already, is this sandal from Sandugo. ![]() It wont slip away unlike those flip flops and havianas when mud gets in. The straps all over your foot will prevent it from slipping away. A strap catching your big toe gives you a more secure hold. This sandals cost less than P1,000. Another good secondary is this pair of aqua shoes from Sandugo. This pair costs less than P1,000. I have tried using another aqua shoes when I joined a trek for the Tangadan falls. It was a one-hour trek going up. It was under the "easy trek" category. Crossing rivers was indeed easy with these aqua shoes. Nonetheless, my feet weren't comfortable because I could feel every stone I stepped on in the trail. The sole was just too thin. This one looks better. Then again, this is just for crossing rivers and the muddy trails and not for the rest of long trek. ![]() By the way, i've seen fellow hikers who were wearing the typical running shoes who survived the trek nonetheless. Then again, wrong footwear will affect your climb and may even increase the risk of accidents. Check out these rubber hiking shoes from a known online store; hiking shoes from Lazada.com Support Philippine-made products. Hiking provides livelihood to many people too. The tour guides, the transport service, the food stores, the hiking gear shops, the tour organizers and even those who make the bag tags and souvenir T-shirts. Let's continue helping our folks by patronizing local brands. So remember, 'as long as the sole is hard enough and has spikes or treads that are suitable for hiking,, then it should work fine. Just respect the danger and understand the capability and limits of your shoes. Dry Bag ![]() Buy your own DRY BAG too. See photo above. You need this to secure your valuables (phones, camera and wallet,) especially when crossing rivers or when it suddenly rains. Get the one with a sling so that you can easily carry it on your shoulder. You may get one from any SM mall. Price ranges from P600 to P1,500 or more. Belt bags The dark green bag is a belt bag. You need this to allow yourself to carry your wallet and phones but remain light, considering the trek. Usually, in those day tours, you will simply leave your heavy backpacks in the car and just carry a few items that you want to secure, such as your wallet and phones. Back Pack with rain cover Choose the size that fits you right. It should have straps across your chest and waist to keep the bag in its right place. If your bag is tightly strapped around your body, it will be easier for you to climb. Try to minimize your things. Carry less as much as possible. Bring with you the things that you really need for the climb. Every weight to put in your back pack will make your climb harder for you to endure. Umbrella (folding type) Bring one if the weather bulletin says it will rain over that place. Or choose the raincoat instead. Raincoat During the rainy season, it will be better if you have this with you, not just to prevent yourself from getting wet but to protect your bag and your things, like your camera, phone, wallet and etcetera. Hat You need this during summer or when it's not raining. I chose the ROUND HAT since it gives you the best protection from the sun ![]() Climbing Rod / Hiking Pole / Trekking Pole Read more about this tool. Click here. Head Lamp Read more about this tool. FOR MAJOR CLIMBS OR THOSE LASTING FOR DAYS - tent - climbing rod - flashlight or headlamp - portable stove - camping knife - poncho, sweater, jacket - hammock - bonnet (to protect your head from the cold) - insect repellant lotion ![]() camping hammock with mosquito net SWIMMING, DIVING, SNORKELING Better get one of this AQUA SHOES to protect your feet from those sharp rocks, corals and other objects on the beach and trail. I bough this diving shoes / aqua shoes to be prepared in those water activities. I got this through OLX and paid P1,200 plus P150 for shipping. The seller has a store in Tiendesitas in Pasig City. RIVER CROSSINGS and MOUNTAIN TRAILS TIPS ON HOW TO SAFELY TRAVERSE THE TRICKY RIVER Wear trekking shoes or shoes with very hard soles since these type of soles provide a more stable grip on those slippery rocks. Hard soles are like nails or spikes that helps you get a stable grip on those slippery rocks. Don't wear slippers or those with soft and smooth soles. In case you only have slippers, better take these off since going barefoot is a much safer way to cross the river because you can easily feel if the rock you are about to step on is slippery or not. Thus, giving you good choices where you should rest your feet and prevent yourself from losing your balance and fall, with your head hitting the big rocks. When taking the river trek, be very careful. Do not step on the wet rocks or those that are obviously coated with algae since these are slippery. You might slip and fall and hurt yourself seriously. Walk on the sandy part instead. Step on any dry huge rock only. Careful when stepping on these dry rocks too because even if these are dry, some rocks are not really resting on the ground (or other rocks) firmly. If the rock moves once you've stepped on it, you might lose your balance, fall and with your head hitting the other big rocks. To test if the rock is stable, put some weight on it using one of your feet and then try to move it. If it doesn't move even a little then you may proceed. But if it moves, leave it and choose another rock to step on instead. When crossing bridges, have your companion hold one of your hands to give you a better balance as you cross the bridge. Before crossing the very short and narrow bridge, hand over some of what you are carrying to the person at the other end of the bridge before you cross it in order for you to achieve a better balance. When walking on those narrow irrigation canal walls, irrigation dam, walk slowly and make sure that your companion is close enough to reach for you when you suddenly lose your balance or slip. Moreover, if you have asthma or heart problem, be sure that you are ready to take this trek challenge. BETTER WAY TO ENJOY THE TOUR Join TOUR PACKAGES to save on cost! Also, with these tour packages, you will be afforded a tour guide, where to get your meal, your service vehicle, the safe route to go through, tips and infos about the other places that you can go to. Best of all, moving in groups provide security. There were trekkers who got robbed and murdered already. All of them were walking alone. Two ladies in another story got robbed too. They had no other companions at that time. Moving in groups provide ease of travel and big savings too. Tour packages saves you a lot and you dont need to worry how to get there. Meal, fees, routes and tour guides have all been arranged for you. ![]() SUGGESTED TOUR PROVIDERS that i've tried click here http://s15.zetaboards.com/emancampos/topic/10060196/1/ Edited by emancampos, Nov 27 2016, 08:05 PM.

HIKING TOOLS that you should have if you want to hike often![]() 1. Hiking Pole - You will always need it. It gives you more balance while climbing up or down. It somehow lessens your weight when climbing up, making it easier for you to climb. It prevents your feet from slipping since it acts as your third leg, reducing weigh on your two legs and giving you a sturdier foothold. You can also use this for reaching ropes, branches, things that you accidentally dropped that are beyond your arm's reach. You can also use it to ward off aggressive wildlife..... or peers :D. I have experienced this dilemma while climbing a muddy slope in our Laiban-Tanay hike. It was raining since typhoon signal number 2 was up over the area. The ground was muddy, and this particular slope turned arduous for us to climb since the steps that were carved by the guides long before were all gone. These steps were all totally damaged by those who passed through before us. So, we needed something to grab on to but the grasses and the roots nearby were beyond our reach. I needed something to hook it close to me but I had no tools to do so. We ended up asking our guide to climb up first and pull us up by the hand like inutiles. ![]() 2. Head Lamps - There will be times when you need to start the climb before dawn to catch the sea of clouds or the sunrise. You will need this. Night hikes and campings require this too. 3. Climbing Gloves - You need this to help yourself climb rocks safer and easier. It prevents your palms from getting bruised or cut by the sharp rock edges.
