Mt. Sipit Ulang

Rodriguez, Rizal

January 29, 2017

Mt. Sipit-Ulang is probably one of the must-see peaks in the Philippines. Its monolith is among the unique ones. It gives you a good view of surrounding mountain range and the metropolis to the West.

Sipit Ulang is a Tagalog word meaning "crayfish's claw". Sipit is claw while Ulang is crayfish. Crayfish is a type of shrimp that is commonly found in rivers. Its other name is Freshwater Lobster. Nevertheless, it doesn't grow as big as the usual lobster that you see in the movies or in the market. It's usually just around 3 to 4 inches in length. The monolith resembles a crayfish claw.

Climbing the monolith gives the beginners or novice climbers a good way to try rock climbing.

Moreover, the Panikian Trail gives everyone an exciting and fulfilling hike. You get to experience going through narrow caves, walking through a narrow wooden bridge and climbing up a long ladder just to get out of the cave.

You'll also come across 2 rock formations. One gives you the view of Mt. Oro and the valley. The other rock formation, the next one along the trail, is called Baby Sipit. It is a 30-foot monolith and gives the hikers a good opportunity to try rock climbing.

The trail leading back to the jump off point is also enjoyable as well. You'll get to try crossing streams twice after going through the woods and the rockies.

It is highly recommended that you take the Panikian Trail as you go up and use the other trail, the Banayad Trail, when you head back to the jump-off point. Banayad Trail is an easy hike down and includes crossing the stream twice.

Perfect side trip is the multi-layered Payaran Falls, which is just a 45-minute walk and easy hike from the Baranggay Hall.

The rock formation was still fully occupied by another group of around 20 people. So, we just waited for them to come down. While waiting, we took some shots of the metropolis and surrounding mountains.

Dont forget your climbing gloves, head lamp and hiking rod!

You need this to help yourself climb rocks safer and easier. It prevents your palms from getting bruised or cut by the sharp rock edges.

Mt. Sipit Ulang part 2

February 27, 2017

Honestly, it was not a part of my plan to revisit this well-loved rock formation!

My plan was to join the group and stay behind in the river area to do bird photography instead and rejoin the group as they head back to jump off and have lunch together before we proceed to our trek towards the Payaran Falls.

It wasn't my plan to climb Ulang once again. I just wanted to see the falls and shoot photos of those purple-headed birds that we saw in a spot along the riverbank during our first hike there.

Fortunately, our organizer, Ren Villaflor, told me that I should see the 2nd trail since it gives a good view of the valley and these caves and tunnels along the trails.

To my surprise, I was not disappointed at all. I am so thankful in fact!

By the way, the cave is home to a lot of bats before. When people began to visit the area, the bats moved to another location.

This trail by the way is called the PANIKIAN TRAIL. Obviously, due to these bats.

If you are going to Mt. Sipit-Ulang, this is the best trail so far. Then climb down via the other trail.
