NAVIGATING THE ALOHA SLOPE

Posted Image
the notorious slope

Why I called this the ALOHA SLOPE?

ALOHA in Hawaii may mean "Hello" ............ or "Good bye!"

If you do it right, the beautiful falls will be there to greet you. But if you make the wrong step, then it's a good bye.

During our climb, most of the hikers where literally sitting on the grass and slowly pulling themselves down the slope as if they were trying to slide. You really could not stand up. Gravity will just pull you down. Again, if you loose that foothold, you might come down rolling on that 100-meter steep slope.

To the hike leaders, the Kapitans, a good strategy is telling your group how to go through this slope. One expert climber must take the lead, while the amateurs follow him in line. In this strategy, your fellow climbers next to you can give you an extra hold to regain your balance and give you that needed confidence to overcome fear and lack of experience. All hikers should carry a Hiking Pole to help them navigate the slope safely.

Luckily for me, I came prepared. I had with me my hiking shoes and my hiking pole. What I did was I always placed the pole before me, burying the tip to about 3 inches to the ground in order for me to get a secure hold.

Then when I was sure the pole was firm enough, I would move my foot to the next step.

I also kept grabbing a bundle of grass to get me a more secure hold. My left hand was grabbing the bundle while my right hand was holding the pole.

I only made a step when the pole and my left hand have done their part in giving me a good balance.

After making a step, I would move the pole to the next spot, then my left hand would release my grab on the bundle of grass and then grab another bundle that's closer to my next step. Once the two got a secure hold, I would then make another step. It's as easy as that.

Yes. I was standing while navigating the slope and not sitting like most of my peers.

But that is for amateurs like me. Some, the pros, the so called "Harkor" simply slid down the slope with ease as if they were just playing.

Easy for them?

Easier than most maybe ..... but as you can see in these photos, they were all as tired as us! :D

Why sitting gets you a better balance anyway?

That is because your center of gravity will be closer to the ground and it will be harder for you to fall down or get pulled by the gravity to roll over.

By the way, be careful on using the Hiking Pole. It is not really that strong. It can break since it cannot really carry even half of your weight. It should be used to simply give you a more stable hold and to reduce the weight burdening your knees as you climb up and climb down.

Believe me, climbing down with 10 kilos on your back hurts your knees more than when you climb up with the same load.

Nonetheless, it is very hard to break the rod when the force is directed right along the rod, pressing that weight on the handle and directing the force towards the tip in a straight line. But when you apply the force at an angle, the pole will break.

When descending on a steep slope, I would bury the tip to about 2-3 inches to the ground, transfer a portion of my body weight against it with my hand, with the force directed in a straight line, right through the pole and towards the tip, in order to lessen the weight on my knees and to counter the pull of gravity.

This does two things, lessen the burden on my knees, which gives me more walking endurance, and counter the pull of gravity, which gives me a better balance too.

So, get your own hiking pole and hiking shoes.

Believe me! You're a new you when you've successfully gotten through this one! Enjoy the feeling of being you're that good after all.

You might even forget that you're heartbroken. :D

I hope that helps.

Happy hiking!

REMINDER

This slope (traverse) is only suitable for experienced hikers or those beginners who have skilled hikers right by their side.

This is not recommended for kids, seniors and people who are afraid of height or those who have a problem maintaining balance.

SUMMER HEAT

Summer months of April and May may be too much for those who who are beginners, seniors and those with heart or lung problem.

Just in case, bring 3 liters of water, a bottle of energy drink, round hat, umbrella and your sun block.

Have a good sleep prior to climb.

If you have a heart problem, hypertension, lung problem, asthma or diabetes, I suggest that you join schedules wherein the forecast temperature is below 40 degrees Celcius.

Don't forget your medicines.

If in case you suddenly feel uncomfortable during the hike, tell the guide immediately.

What you can do;

1. Loosen your clothes, find shelter and drop all of your load.
2. Take a rest, rehydrate, take your meds
3. Relax. Don't panic. Panicking will raise your blood pressure even more. It will also affect your breathing (bad for those with lung problem, asthma or hypertension). It will make you more dizzy. Just relax. Breathe in, breathe out. Think positive. Pray.
4. Ask the guide and some of your peers to accompany you back to base via the shortest easy route.
5. Ask the guide or your peers to carry your bag and other things for you instead.

NOTE: Every mountain or every climb has its own risks and dangers. It could be a health issue, an accident or even a crime like robbery with homicide. Offer a prayer before you climb. Be prepared before you climb. Enjoy nature but respect the dangers nonetheless.

ALOHA FALLS: Those who wanna enjoy it but can't go through the slope may simply 'back trail', have lunch at the base camp and then take a ride on a mini truck and enjoy the walk along the river, which ends right at the falls.
