Have any of you spent time watching episodes from the first two seasons of ARROW (the show about Oliver Queen on CW)? When I started writing promos for The Heart Attack Kid, I wanted to find a way to put background into the character / explain where he is / who he is, while still attacking the task at hand (that being, directing thoughts and words towards the current match in which HAK is booked). I don't know if I was totally fully aware of it the first two times I wrote things this way, but by probably the third roleplay I did in this manner, it occurred to me that I could roleplay with HAK the same way that ARROW presents information to its viewers, through flashbacks / throwbacks to prior events which had a direct impact on the situation at hand, be it through physical / mental / emotional strengths or scars those situations had provided. No one had ever mentioned it, and as a variation on the HAK character occurred to me for character development going forward, it occurred to me that I should reach out to the group at large and see if anyone saw my work thus far in the same way that I did, because I'm having a blast doing it this way. And, I'm not trying to say that I'm breaking new ground, here. I'm just saying that I enjoy doing it this way, and I love the parallel it has to the way ARROW is doing things. |

I'm 3/4 of the way through the first season as we speak, actually. I like the idea/concept, and when we first started I used flashbacks in a similar way with Draven to fill in his backstory, although in my head it was more along the lines of LOST. My personal advice would be to develop a timeline in an outline of sort, and follow that. It'll make everything more cohesive, and if you can use time as a reference point I think it'll help your storytelling out. Good viewpoint! |
