I’m about to lose my mind
You’ve been gone for so long
I’m running out of time.
I need a doctor
Call me a doctor
I need a doctor, a doctor
To bring me back to life.

“You have two voicemail messages. To hear your messages, press 1.”

BEEP.

“First voicemail message. Sent, Wednesday, March 16th, 12:45am. One minute, forty-seven seconds. To listen to this message, press 1.”

BEEP.

Hey… I wasn’t sure if I should call, but I couldn’t really sleep after tonight. And, to be fair, you did say I could call you anytime I needed… (audible sigh)...

Look, I’m sure you know the full story about me right now. Restarting this company for the sole purpose of finally getting one up over Haven. Getting it all on tape so that, someday, I could play it back to see that I could finally beat the man. But the more him and I play this game, the more gray and black it seems that I’m not going to get my revenge. And I know that nobody else sees my vision, and I’m looking for that ray of hope.

But I wanted to say thank you for trying to breath some life into me a couple days ago. I know you didn’t have to talk to me, and I know that you don’t necessarily agree with why I’m doing it, and I know that you’ve got your own demons that you’re fighting, having lost your son to that asshole, Haven.

Shit, why am I still rambling on like a crying bitch on this message?

Look, I know you risked your career to come back, just like I’m risking mine for this deal with Haven.

I guess what I’m trying to say is thanks for the conversation, because I don’t think you realized how much it meant to me. I’m not giving up on my mission, and I don’t think you should give up on yours, either. So I hope, at some point, you come back again, because this place could use someone like you around, for fuck’s sake.

It was good to talk, Grady. Gimme a call back if you want.

“To save this message, press 7.”

BEEP.

“Next saved message. Sent Monday, April 18th, 8:49pm. One minute, twelve seconds. To listen to this message, press 1.”

BEEP.

Hey Grady. This is Stacy Vandervort.

Look, I’m really going out on a limb here with this call. I was hoping you’d pick up so I could talk to you personally, but I’ll try and explain really quick since we’re in the middle of Battlelines right now.

(sighs) I’m trying to figure out all of the pieces of this EWA puzzle, and considering Duane just changed the puzzle on Michael, I’m reaching out to you for ideas.

I know you’ve been second guessing yourself, questioning whether or not you want to come back and straighten all of this out with Martin. But you can’t let Haven continue to be his leader. You’re supposed to be his mentor..

(sighs) DAMNIT GRADY! Can’t you remember who you are?

10-time World Heavyweight Champion.

One of the most respected men this industry has ever seen.

When everyone told you that you couldn’t do something, you did it.

When everyone needed someone to look to in order to figure out what to do -- the RIGHT thing to do -- they turned to you.

Please Grady, give me a call back as soon as you get this.

Because I guarantee you, you’re either going to want to fight me at the end of this, or you’re going to want to hug me.

But I’m out of options; there’s nothing else I can do.

Please, Grady. Thanks.

BEEP.

“End of new messages.”

(Grady Smith sits on a wooden bench in a very non-descript locker room. Alone, still in his wrestling gear, holding a cell phone in his hands. Hair drenched, a combination of water and sweat dripping down onto the white towel around his neck.)

It feels like it was a lifetime ago since I was last in this position.

But I still remember it just like it was yesterday.

And I know some people cracked jokes about the last time I was inside an EWA ring. “What’s he doing here?” “Can he still hang with this younger generation?”

But I knew… I knew that as soon as I put on that wrestling gear, it’s lights off.

Because this time was different.

Not like the time before.

(Grady runs his free hand through his hair, pulling his hair back, smiling)

You know, when you’ve been in this business as long as I have, you’ll have friends that come and go, but over time, you learn who your real family is. You learn who those people are that you can trust through all of the trials and tribulations you encounter.

And you learn when those lines of trust are legitimate or when they’re not worth the paper they’re written on.

Earlier tonight, it wasn’t so much about who I could put my trust in, but more about who I knew that, without a shadow of a doubt, I could NOT trust.

Alexander Haven

Chris Kage

Duane Gates

Names that, if you’re any kind of historian of our business, you know that they are not men to be trusted… EVER.

So the phone calls that were made… (shakes head) They didn’t need to be made.

Greatly appreciated, but completely unnecessary.

I knew the writing on the wall. I saw the inevitable ending that this match earlier tonight was going to have. I knew that, in order for the correct outcome to occur, it had to include one name to come put a halt to all of the shenanigans.

Grady Smith.

This takes nothing away from the other five individuals that essentially put their careers on the line tonight. But they were missing that one piece to turn the tide into their favor.

Grady Smith.

Now, don’t get it twisted. This isn’t simply to toot my own horn, pat myself on the back and proclaim that how incredibly awesome I am. But age brings wisdom and foresight. And this match needed that one spark to bring together one team and throw a monkey wrench into the other team.

Grady Smith.

(A long, deep breath, once again running his hand through his hair)

So where does that leave us now.

You heard Stacy earlier. And I just finished answering all of the reporters questions right before. But I’m back. Not only for Martin this time, but for much, much more. Martin will be taken care of for the sins he’s committed against his family. I told him after the Warrior’s Trial that judgement was coming for him, and it shall come for him right soon.

But as for everyone else in the EWA…

I see the fields are burning, I feel the river rising…

I can’t stop the Dogs of War…

… and this time, nor do I want to.
