MCI Center - Washington, D.C. Monday, May 2, 2016 11:34 PM Victory. With the help of the returning Grady Smith, Michael Draven had been able to secure the victory for Team Draven, and permanently eliminate Duane Gates from his role as interim CEO of the company...thereby exorcising the demon that he'd been carrying since Osbourne Kilminster won the position for Gates back in January. The fact that he'd been the one to eliminate Kilminster made it that much sweeter. Draven had seen one of his students - the larger one, Jurgen - raging at ringside as he'd planted the former World Heavyweight Champion with the Downfall, right onto the steel chair. Haven...he had Alex beat, but once again, fate conspired against him, this time in the form of Gates's hired gun, Johan Dietrich. It didn't matter. Michael knew it was but a matter of time before he had Haven back in the ring. It was inevitable. In fact, tonight's win had been a weight lifted off his shoulders. He'd defeated Haven. He hadn't pinned his shoulders to the mat, of course, and thus it wasn't a "true" victory...but it was just enough to get inside Haven's head. The Youth leader would want to "right the wrong" of Michael Draven gaining the advantage over him. It was just a matter of time. The press conference was ending. Erik had finally stopped talking. He'd sat there, listening, only speaking when a question about Haven had been directed at Stacy. He'd pledged to stay out of decision making, for the most part...but she would not trump him in decisions regarding Haven and The Youth. He had a new plan in place, thanks to an old friend, and nobody would get in the way of it being implemented. Not even Erik Draven. Michael had taken great pride in surviving to the end of the match, especially considering Erik was the first one eliminated. It felt good to accomplish something that his brother had been unable to. Erik had pledged to be there for him, and he was - until Kage eliminated him. While he knew Erik would always be there when Michael needed him, it was exhilarating to, for one night only, be the better Draven. He stood from the table, slipping in front of Stacy and Erik to make a quick exit. He needed to get Maggie to the hospital for her MRI. Draven ducked through the doorway - only to see that someone was waiting on him, towel on his shoulders, still in his wrestling gear. Grady Smith. Even at 43, the man was one of the most imposing figures in the sport. Not like Erik, who was imposing because of his size. But simply because of his stature in the industry and everything he had accomplished in the past… and tonight. Nobody, not even Michael, expected him to last over an hour in the ring, let alone be back here in the EWA again to begin with. But Michael knew, just like himself, he had unfinished business. And just like Michael, he knew Grady couldn’t just leave unfinished business be. “If there’s one thing I never thought I’d see in this sport, it’s Michael Draven in an authoritative role.” Grady stuck out his hand to shake. “Well, authoritative is a relative term, at least for me. Erik is rea…” Just now realizing that Grady is still holding out his hand, Michael finally shook it. Even though they’ve known each other in some regard for over 15 years, he still made Michael nervous. That’s just that presence Grady had in a room. “Relax, kid…” Michael really didn’t like being called “kid”, but at this point, he wasn’t really going to talk back to someone like Grady, either, especially after tonight. “...you looked good up there. " “Well, I wouldn’t be up there if it wasn’t for you.” “It was a team effort, Michael. Everyone contributed equally, whether they were there six minutes or sixty.” Shit. Even off the cuff, the man still had that ability to see the bigger picture. Some of the same traits that his older brother had as well. “I know you’ve got a lot going on right now, so I’m not going to hold you up. I just wanted to come by and say congratulations, see the whole spectacle, all that shit.” “I don’t think I can say thank you enough.” “I don’t need you to say thank you, Michael. I know how thankful you are now.” The former ten time World Champion leaned in to Michael. “Just remember how thankful you are when I need you to fulfill your end of our deal.” Without saying, Michael knew exactly what Grady was talking about. Michael knew that he had a huge debt that needed to be repaid soon to Grady. But Grady also knew that Michael had a lot on his mind tonight, and that cashing in that repayment tonight wasn’t the best use of his bargaining chip. Grady shook Michael’s hand one last time, just as Stacy, finally finished up with questions, started to walk over very sheepishly. With her hands over her mouth, attempting to hide her excitement over what happened tonight, she continued walking over towards the two men who lasted through the entire match tonight, until she couldn’t contain her excitement any longer. The last three steps towards the former ten-time World Champion were sprints before leaping into Grady’s arms, hugging him as if they were two long-lost friends finally reunited. Startled, Grady caught her at the last second. Michael smiled, as he knew this was his chance to duck out and find Maggie. A quick nod in Grady's direction as Stacy began to speak excitedly, and he was off, navigating the hallways toward the locker room he and Maggie had staked out. Michael turned the corner...and nearly walked right into another man. A much larger man. Jurgen Johanssen. "Hey, sorry about that." Jurgen stood quietly, saying nothing, glaring at Draven. He tried to step around Jurgen, but Jurgen side-stepped, positioning himself directly in front of him. Draven stepped into the other direction...and Jurgen did as well, impeding his path. Great. Michael sighed, but before he could open his mouth to speak, Jurgen silently stepped aside, clearing the path for Draven to walk - but never taking an eye off him. Draven knew Jurgen was upset at ringside about him pinning Kilminster, but this was a bit over the top. He shook his head, continuing his walk. Michael stopped in front of the room where Maggie was waiting. He knew she'd been watching the match...knew she'd be excited for the outcome. But he paused a moment, reflecting. "I love you. Now go kick some ass." The words uttered to him right before he'd left Dr. Furman's office earlier. Maggie McIntyre, professing her love for him. It felt wonderful. Finally, things in his life were going well, for the first time in ye-- BZZZZZZ His train of thought interrupted by his cell phone, buzzing in his hand. Stacy had retrieved the phone for him while the match was going on, so that Maggie could contact her if something was needed - specifically, if Indrid Calder attempted anything. They took no chances after Mexico. He swiped his phone, opening the text. X-Calibur. "Hey Mike, sorry about earlier. Wasn't trying to sabotage the team. Figured Ozzy needed a hardcore fucking beating. Fuck those guys. Glad we won." He chuckled to himself. Eryk Van Warren, blunt as always. He quickly typed a response. "No hard feelings. Thanks for the backup. Tell Goeren I hope things work out. Shitty situation for him." He rapped once on the door. They kept it locked at the arenas if she was left alone. She opened the door. His beautiful girlfriend, on crutches, beaming at him. She jumped into his arms, bad knee and all. "I'm so proud of you." Life was good. Let's see how long it would last. |
