The Iron Saint
"...Nah, Mason. I'm doing okay. I'm a bit worried about you, honestly." Jaime sat in the study, looking over a stack of magazines. The whole atmosphere has been one of two old friends bearing everything. The large Cuban's eyes are also slightly red. As Tanya looks over the room, she can tell something is wrong. "And the doctors couldn't tell anything... Something... I mean, she was healthy as..."

And all Tanya could see was the image of her fiance grasping at straws mentally. As if something didn't make sense to him... And what was he talking about? "When is Leona's family planning on the funeral, then..."

"Jaime... what are you talking about?"

"...she's dead. You gotta be kidding me..."

Tanya stood there, and the gears in her brain turned slowly. Thoughts clicked into place and Tanya closed her eyes for a moment. Taking a deep breath, she left the room, heading for the back porch.

As Jaime heard the door shut, he realizes that Tanya heard the conversation. And now, everything clicked for him. Finality... His worst fear. Only it's happening to one of the toughest men he knew. "...Then, back to Manchester. I know you're wanted there, but... Maybe home is better than here now. You have my number, then. And I'll let Tanya know you called..." As the phone call ended... Jaime threw the phone across the room in a burst of rage. None of this made sense to him... Even a man who's taken a life... Those people... They deserved it. But Leona Pierce... She deserved a kick in the ass. She deserved a punch to the jaw. But not dying in her sleep... As the phone hit the wall, Jaime held his face in his hands…

After several more minutes Tanya walks back in. Jaime can smell the fresh nicotine on her. Tanya had tried to cut down her smoking, but certain things just made her crave a cigarette. She had never said she would quit, but she just had less reason to smoke as often as she used to.

"So she's gone? Just like that?"

He shook his head in his hands and tried to make sense of it. But nothing maad sense. "Just like that... Heart stopped and Mason tried CPR... But nothing."

"I hate death. I'm sick of it Jaime."

"You and me, both..."

Tanya stood for a moment, before sitting in Jaime's lap and snuggling against him.

"What do we do now?"

Jaime pulled her close to him and nods. He doesn't have a clear answer, but she saw his red face and his red eyes. "We have to move forward, love... We'll pay our respects to her, honestly. She may have been a bitch and a half... But she didn't treat us very badly overall, either."

"Nope. She was an honest bitch. Not like she pretended to be nice so she could stab you in the back. She and I made peace just before her wedding you know."

"I know you two did. She also told me that she cursed us to be together in a sanitarium ever after."

Tanya laughed, though, it had a tinge of sadness to it.

"Nah, the food in those places suck and they never let you have forks. Just spoons."

As they moved closer together in the study chair, he looked over at his Samsung 6 in pieces... "I Elvis'd the phone, too. I probably am a damn nut. And also hate that they won't even allow sporks."

Tanya grinned, as she looked at the pile of scrap.

"That's true. I mean if it was an iPhone, I'd understand. The phone would have deserved it. Siri is a bitch."

"That's the one thing I'm afraid of... something like this happening. Mason is headed back to Manchester. He's pretty much willing to face all of the charges he left the UK over. He doesn't care anymore about escape. He just wanted to go home."

Tanya didn't speak for a minute. She let the comments sit on their own for a moment.

"And yet you still got that special ring. You still proposed."

He kept his arms around her. "Because honestly... I'm afraid of life without you right now, Tanya. What would happen to me, if you didn't brashly come into my life?

"And if you hadn't accepted me? Even with Kei's help, I'd still be lonely and eaten up from the inside, taking it out on the world. She helped put me in a place I could love again. But I still needed someone to love."

"I do think that Mason is lost for the moment. Truly lost."

"We will help him, Jaime. He has friends. Sometimes, you just have to be lost, and we will be there when he is ready to see the light again."

The large man nodded with her. As he did, he looked at her for a minute. "We look like a couple of sobbing idiots, don't we?" As he said this absurd statement, she saw a tear stream down his face…

Tanya wipes the tear away with one gentle finger.

"Yeah, but we are allowed. I gave up trying to be cool when I was a sophmore and chose to date a nervous nerd instead of the hot new pitcher. Egon was a great boyfriend."

"And I'm sure the hot pitcher ended up blowing his elbow trying to get on the Red Sox. Also, has a gut and child support."

"Nah, he's an alcoholic stuck in the farm league. Good enough not to cut, but too much trouble for the majors. Also, Egon runs a game design company with his wife. I still think I won. I got an old man who can out snipe anyone who drunkenly hits on me in a bar."

"From the neighboring town. Can't forget that part."

He puts a hand on her stomach and looked at her for a moment. "So, your doctor called me on accident... And while I lectured him on ethics and how to dial your number..."

"Well I do have you on file as my alternate number. Though it won't work until you get a new phone. Was this about my neck or the bruised ribs?"

"The ovaries..."

"Ohhh... So it was the OB/GYN. You should have said so."

Tanya stroked Jaime's hair as she sat there acting like she wasn't concerned about the conversation

"He told me a small bit, but I didn't listen. I have more respect than that, honestly. If you wanted to tell me anything, then I'd let you..."

Tanya shrugged her shoulders and looked at the wall instead of Jaime.

"I'm sure you've read about it. Wrestling does bad things to a body. The doctor and I suspected it a few years ago but with the upcoming wedding I got an updated report. I was going to tell you once I knew for sure. I didn't think it would worry you since you already have a daughter... I hope you'd still marry me."

"At least you're not filled with STDs. You're healthy. And you're here. If we wanted more kids... We could adopt one. So, yes. I'm still marrying you."

Tanya nodded, and leaned down to kiss Jaime. It was a long and gentle kiss. The kind of kiss that only happened when you already knew what lied between two people.

Jaime kept Tanya in his arms and smiled at her. The younger brunette kept her playful manner towards him, but they kept their eyes locked on each other. "So, what other worries or business do we also have? I mean it's too early to just go to bed and..."

"Well we still haven't set a date for the wedding and after the news about Mason I don't think I want to talk about that for a couple days. Seems weird. Otherwise it's just the same old adulting. Oh and you still have like eight episodes of Rick and Morty on the DVR to watch."

"We could also watch what's on your DVR queue. Or your Crunchyroll queue." That's two words you never thought you'd hear. Jaime and Crunchyroll. "Sushi and movies. That one place we always call?"

"Only if they have the octopus as the daily fresh meat. I'm in the mood for octopus."

"What is it about octopus? I mean, I can see calimari. Even the clams and the Tiger rolls..."

"I like how it's squishy and chewy and it has a good flavor. You don't have to order it."

Tanya smirks as she looks at Jaime.

"Humor me and I'll promise to pop a mint right after dinner so you can't tell what I ate. And you can pick what queue we hit up."

"Alright, you can have the octopus. And we'll do the couples Netflix queue. Where we make fun of those chick comedies like Bridesmaids. Because what makes that movie funny? Guaranteed, I can hit over a thousand sins."

"True, most rom-coms suck. Fools Rush In is awesome though."

"Clueless white guy. Hot Mexican with huge titties. That's kinda our reverse..."

"Which makes it doubly fun. Plus the soundtrack kicks ass." Tanya giggled, as she pried herself off Jaime.

"What else are you plotting, miss? Not like I can get calls now. Not until I get a new phone this week..."

"Nothing. Use my phone to call for dinner since yours went all smashy, Mister. I'm getting hungry..."

I'm broke but I'm happy
I'm poor but I'm kind
I'm short but I'm healthy, yeah
I'm high but I'm grounded

As the pallbearers carried the small casket across the Vegas landscape… Jaime sat back with Mason and Tanya. His mind drifted to those better times. Mason was calm, but he wasn’t there. His mind and heart were just as well in the casket as could be… Tanya gripped Jaime’s hand. The big man hated funerals, this much was known. But, for someone who didn’t even make it to her mid thirties...

I'm sane but I'm overwhelmed
I'm lost but I'm hopeful baby
What it all comes down to
Is that everything's gonna be fine fine fine

Inside Jaime’s mind, he remembered the first meeting ever. A bottle of Jameson’s in the backstage area with the Hierarchy after the show. Something the fans never saw… The fact that outside of the circus, they were a family that was unbreakable by SHOOT politics...

'cause I've got one hand in my pocket
And the other one is giving a high five

Jaime remembered he, Mason and Leona hugging after their match. The fact that the two fighters came out ultimately unscathed from the conflict in Vegas was something to celebrate.

I feel drunk but I'm sober
I'm young and I'm underpaid
I'm tired but I'm working, yeah

He remembered the first ever board meeting with Mason and Leona… the mean Italian decided to throw her bottle of water at him. Cindy Samson leaned back in her chair as Mason and his friend, R.J. Jackson, tried to break up the fight.

I care but I'm restless
I'm here but I'm really gone
I'm wrong and I'm sorry baby

He remembered carrying Leona after she took a particularly nasty bump from a roster member. Cindy Samson had to keep Mason restrained while the EMTs went to work. The old warrior came back to reality as Cindy patted him on the shoulder.

What it all comes down to
Is that everything's gonna be quite alright
'cause I've got one hand in my pocket
And the other one is flicking a cigarette

Cindy shook her head, as she remembered Leona bursting into rage after seeing the shirt that Breaking Kayfabe made for her. Everyone in the room died of laughter seeing her reaction.

And what it all comes down to
Is that I haven't got it all figured out just yet
'cause I've got one hand in my pocket
And the other one is giving the peace sign

Cindy remembered the four of them walking across the empty arena after the show. Everyone was slightly tipsy, but it was the last show. Jaime looked over at the others and nodded. Leona shed a bit of a tear then, but all was meant to be at that time...

I'm free but I'm focused
I'm green but I'm wise
I'm hard but I'm friendly baby

Jaime remembered when he and Mason had to clean out the former Hierarchy living space… Leona nearly fainted from the sight of the party palace that would later become her home.

I'm sad but I'm laughing
I'm brave but I'm chickenshit
I'm sick but I'm pretty baby

The wedding of Mason and Leona popped up in Jaime and Tanya’s minds. Leona ended up dancing with Jaime, as he ended up being the best man of the damned thing. He remembered Leona telling him about Tanya. “Take care of her, old man. She may be all you have left on this crazy rock.”

And what it all boils down to
Is that no one's really got it figured out just yet
'cause I've got one hand in my pocket
And the other one is playing the piano

Jaime closed his eyes and thought about when he and Mason signed over the entire Orion library to EWA Entertainment. Mason looked at his picture of Leona and nodded. As the Dravens accepted the sale, everyone looked up and Mason was gone...

And what it all comes down to my friends
Is that everything's just fine fine fine
'cause I've got one hand in my pocket
And the other one is hailing a taxi cab

As Leona’s casket went into the ground, Jaime looked over at Tanya and sighed to her. “And he’s gone again… But left me the keys to his car. A 2016 Lincoln Mark V… It’s probably two days back to Boston…” Tanya shrugged and headed towards the car. As she did, Jaime shook his head and said to the casket. “See you around, Leona. Maybe I’ll get to where you are.”
