How many fricking times...!? She began wondering what could possibly be next. It was like her life in that ring was becoming a variety show for The Youth. Dating back one month to the night she won her first-ever World Championship, Laura Seton has become the test subject for new material for The Youth. Apparently it isn't enough to just punch and kick her and, you know... beat in a wrestling match. Oh no, it has to go much further each and every show. Chairs. Announce tables. Guard rails. Ring posts. A bell. Well, maybe not the bell just yet—but that's certainly around the corner. One of these times you think she could have caught a break, but each time it was simply an invite for more abuse. A night to relish that World Championship win in front of the fans that had gotten behind her the past 15 years? Ruined. A chance to advance in the Path of the Warrior tournament? A World Championship shot to the head said otherwise. Her rematch with Grady Smith that had been wishing for since her career started? The Youth gets involved and her personal dream match—outside of a World Championship match of course—was destroyed. Why did everything have to become so frustrating? This was supposed to be something special. It was supposed to be the swan song of her career. A trip back to where it all began. The culmination of her career... … a World Championship to finally land around her waist! Instead? It's like a mixture of heaven and Hell. She won a World Championship—but got gypped out of it 10 nights later. She's staying in that World Championship hunt—but every time she makes a stride down the road, a nasty bump in the road shows up. No one ever said this was going to be easy. She never expected that once she ever broke through that everything would be a cakewalk. She saw the wars Grady went through. She saw torment X went through. No champion or top contender ever lived on Easy Street, even if they showed that lifestyle and spoke to the audience as if that were the case. It was a challenge. It was sport, so it had to be a challenge. Not every challenge had to be “fun”... But this was doggone ridiculous! If it was one thing she hated, it was frustration. She always prided herself in her work. Some forms admittedly were more important to her—such as sport—but she always made sure her best effort came through and any projects were aced. Even minor interruptions could cause her to begin losing her patience. A phone call while she was running would cause a “Hmph.” Even an innocent “Hey Laura, could you...” as she worked out would see her begin steaming. It was one thing to help people or be disturbed when she wasn't in the middle of something, but if she was trying to get something done or improve herself? Well, let's just say that she's more “20 Minutes of Terror” than “Milk & Cookies.” She may not go completely overboard with anger externally, but internally it wouldn't be surprising if she was fuming. Yet, with her frustration, it split into two categories. There was the kind out of pure hatred. Such as when The Youth begins interrupting her matches. They hate her? Okay, fine. Enemies are plentiful in wrestling—she's been on one side of plenty of deep-rooted dislike. They want to jerk her around and test her mettle? That's essentially the point of being an enemy in wrestling—get that other person to crack enough that you have an easy path to victory. The mindgames are what made wrestling so much fun to watch as a fan and gave so much life to her as a wrestler. It made it so much more special when she won. The other guy talked so much but came up short. What better way to show someone up? But... … what if it's a friend or someone close doing it? [hotpink]Quit thinking about this! It's been how long!?[/color] She always got like this this time of the year. If everything was equal, she would have rid these thoughts years ago but instead they stuck with her like glue. Some moments were great to recall, others stuck with her longer than necessary—for good and/or worse. ———————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————— December 5, 1995 The only thing she could do was sit and stare. Looking down meant reading those three pages of questions over and over and over again. Looking up meant scanning the room of nearly everyone else still working. Amanda was reading a book and Philip was doing a crossword puzzle or some other sort of pencil puzzle but everybody else? Fifteen minutes left. If you're not at the last page of the test by now you're probably not going to finish. She saw a few kids begin panicking. She would have loved to start laughing to herself over that, but her test wasn't in very good shape. Not a single question had been answered. She had the questions memorized by this point, having read them for the majority of the past 15 minutes and she knew all the answers. Whether that was because Laura Seton was simply gifted with intelligence or the fact she spent more than enough time studying at home was up for debate—there was no way this social studies test was going to break her. She makes eye contact with the teacher who, seeing Laura not writing anything at this time, assumes (wrongfully) Laura has finished and shoots her a grin. It was the type of grin that said, “That's my prized student. I'm so proud of her.” Little did Mr. Patterson know he was going to be getting a test just as blank as when he first handed it to her. She looked to her left. Her pencil on the floor directly under Dube's seat. A last-second snatching of it by him left her without a writing utensil. Doing that at the last second also prevented her from being able to ask for it back or, at the least, be able to ask anyone else nearby for a spare—lest she get in trouble for talking. All she could do was sit. Could she have raised a hand? Sure. Could she have gotten up and told Mr. Patterson of her trouble? Absolutely. Instead, she let that frustration get to her. She just gave a cold glare from the corner of her eyes towards that fellow freshman. A handful of rotten thoughts went through her mind as well. By the time she had finished stewing, it was close to 10 minutes later. Too late to say anything about the pre-test controversy, at least in her mind. After all, how much sense would it make to go up to the teacher and say, “Ten minutes ago I had my pencil stolen. Can something be done about that?” Do it fresh after the action—not so much later. If this was the Laura Seton we knew today, she likely would say something, but back here as a 14-year-old, she was still on the quiet side. She continued look up, down and all around the room, almost counting the ticks of the clock until... And... time! Turn your tests over and pass them to the front. With the rest of the time today, get in your groups you formed yesterday and start going on those projects. Laura turns towards Dube, gets a sour expression and shakes her head. He simply smiles and raises his eyebrows at her. She points to the floor, directly at her pencil. Playing dumb, Dube looks around before “finding” it and getting a shocked, “Oh, look at that!” expression. He picks it up and underhands it to her. Jerk... The kids begin getting in their workgroups, which, in Laura's case, means pulling her seat directly next to Dube and have two other nearby friends pull their seats up as well. Dube gives her a friendly poke in the side which sees her shoving his arm away from her. Uh, excuse me... Laura? Can you— She already knew what was going to be asked. Dubey took my pencil. Mr. Patterson gets a slightly puzzled look as a few kids begin snickering. I'm sorry... What? Dubey stole my pencil. The teacher still appears confused as his sight focuses in on Dube. Dube, is this true? Yeah... His sight goes back to Laura. Is there any particular reason you chose not to say anything? You always yell at people talking during tests. He stole it right at the start of the test... She has a look of, “What was I supposed to do?” Yes, but... I think in this... He seems to understand her side of the predicament, though as he stumbles on his words, most of the class has to suppress their on-coming laughs. Just come back after school, okay? The sideshow over, Laura begins taking charge in her group. She opens her notebook and as she's 'distracted,' Dube quickly snatches her textbook, hiding it under his things. I'm taking the history... Alicia has people... Tom culture and Dube the geography. That's right? How are putting this all together? Collaborating every day or work alone and just combine it all? Probably just check in with each other to see everyone's progress. Maybe we can get everything to me a couple days before this is due and I'll get it all into one big paper. Not even a vote to see what the best course of action would be. That arguably could be one of Laura's weaker spots—trying to do too much herself. It certainly would make sense why frustration would be so irritating. If she couldn't work, nothing would get done. Maybe it was a lack of trust in others to do their part to her standards—ones usually way too high for most people to meet—or maybe she had such high confidence in herself that she didn't need help from anyone else. Whatever you say. Dube already had learned in the three months of knowing her it was best not to argue with her. She wasn't speaking up in class, but one-on-one? She wasn't afraid to let a peer have a piece of her mind. Let's see how much there is in the book, then decide who needs other materials. She looks to her right, her usual spot for her book, only to find its not there. Surprised, she begins a search that becomes more hectic with each passing second. It's not on her left—a second search proved that. Was it in her bag? A thorough digging couldn't come up with it. Did it somehow end up on the floor? She turns her head downward, her attention grabbed seeing a larger-than-usual stack of things by Dube. Give me back my BOOK! With a laugh to himself, Dube complies. She snatches it out of his hands and opens it. Unrelated to the noise, the teacher comes over. How are we doing over here? There is one question. We've split this into four categories. We're doing people and culture separately—what exactly should go where? Like, do you only want demographic things for people? As the teacher begins answering, Dube begins lightly poking Laura in the side. Too interested in what the teacher is saying, she either doesn't feel it or isn't willing to brush his hand away. When the teacher finishes and begins walking away, Laura turns back to her notes and starts talking to the other members while Dube starts poking her harder. It becomes too much for her to focus on what needs to be done. She screams at nearly the top of her lungs. CUT IT OUT!!!! Mr. Patterson turns around right away. Dube... Seton... hallway right now. Dube gets up and heads to the door right away while Laura slowly stands in shock. SHE was in trouble?? She's the good one! She was a product of private school her whole life, so those who had gone to school with her already knew that and she had more than earned her “good girl” reputation. Those that previously were in public school that came to this private high school quickly caught on to it as well. It seemed like a spotlight shone on her as she stood there, beginning to blush from embarrassment. She took her walk to the hallway as well but was surprised at how relaxed Mr. Patterson appeared. Let me start by saying I know you two are good kids. You're both good students and this is the first time I've ever had even a small issue with either of you so think of this as not even a slap on the wrist. A look of relief pours over Laura, enough that the teacher notices and has a small laugh. Look, you two like each other... Both students are taken aback at the comment. Not that it isn't true. Oh, come on. Everyone knows. Even us supposedly clueless teachers. The two attempt to act like such a statement could never be true even if it was common knowledge among the kids. Even if I didn't know before, this makes it obvious. It's just like how the boy only proverbially pulls on the pigtails of the girl he likes. Just go easy on her during class, okay Dubey? Dube nods and they both head to the door. Hold it, Seton. WHAT!? What did I do? Why does he get to go in first?? The thought played in her head as she turned around again. You've got to chill out a bit. I can tell you're high-strung. That's fine. You're killing it in your work and you're already killing it in b-ball and that 'go get 'em' streak can play great growing up. You just have to learn to harness it. You're flipping out over such small things... not just today and not only in my class. Mrs. Anderson said you misplaced a paintbrush the other day you were acting like the apocalypse was about to happen. It's one thing to push yourself doing homework and playing sports but losing it over a paintbrush or a book that you were going to get back in a few minutes? I'd like to think you know better. You're on the path to a fantastic life. Just go easy on yourself, okay? ———————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————— I trust my teammates. That's the first question everyone has for Battlelines, right? Do you trust your teammates? I don't know if they trust me but for this one time, I sure hope so. This isn't a simple “team up and teach them a lesson” type of match. This one has quite a bit on the line. A chance for a World Championship match at Path of the Warrior. For EACH of us. This isn't a “win and so-and-so” gets a match. It's win and all three of us get the match. All three of us or none of us at all. We all have that same goal. I've seen some pretty crazy things over the years. People sacrificing years worth of friendship just to move up in a federation. Others let months of hard work climbing to contender status only to lose it all just so he could join up with the “cool kids.” I don't really think Grady nor Azrael are insane enough to want to pass over a World Championship match. They may have quite a few reigns under their respective belts but you know what's weird? Grady Smith has World Championships up and down the board. Azrael Goeren has a couple reigns of his own. In their own ways, they're legends. You may think either of them is ripe for deciding to turn and join The Youth or at least be some sort of crony to Kage—they've had their reigns with no regrets. In a sense it would be like nothing to lose. All they have to do is later turn on him and the stage is set. Either they have a match with a battered Kage or, at the least, Kage is taken out of contention from an injury and they get the shot against whoever is champ. But I don't think that's their line of thought. Sure, I can see the turning after the match. Why not? After all, it weakens at least two of the opponents and maybe Kage is beaten badly enough during the match that Grady or Az then has a much easier road to the World Championship. I'm not saying that's guaranteed to happen, but I wouldn't be surprised if it did happen. My career has more hardships than you can count and has had almost nothing served up on a silver platter. I've had to fight forever to finally gain recognition as a top contender which, considering that career background, I have a feeling of awe as people talk about me as one of EWA's best. I had always dreamed of the day that would happen. Now, it has. I'm not trying to insinuate that my ego suddenly blew up beyond belief here, but I wonder when Az and Grady see me as their partner... … I wonder if a hint of jealousy kicks in. After all, it's not the great Azrael nor the seemingly unstoppable Grady Smith that's ever held an EWA World Championship. It's Laura Seton. Let that sink in. … … Yes, it's embarrassing to say that one needs only to look at the record book to see that Grady's had as many World Championship reigns in his career all over the globe than I've had total days as a World Champion. I'm not saying by any means my run was anything special— —But at least I've had one here. And I'm sure neither of those two like that. That's why I trust them at Battlelines. They're missing something from their personal record and looking at me and seeing that's the only time I've ever won a World Championship? I'm pretty sure that ticks them off beyond belief. The only way they can even have a chance at erasing that discrepancy is by defeating The Youth at Battlelines in order to get that World Championship match at Path of the Warrior. Only then can they attain that EWA World Championship. If I let them, of course. Look—I'm not saying I'm a scrub and I was lucky or I fluked my way into defeating Kage that set off this immature run of behavior by him and that goofy group of his. If I wasn't worth a grain of salt, I wouldn't be having an EWA career, never mind being allowed into a match with such importance. My belonging alongside them may look funny to those that have been fans for the longest time, but please tell me why I haven't earned the right to be in this. Are people never allowed to move up and advance their careers in wrestling? Does it always have to be the same stars every night? Call me a party crasher or a late bloomer or whatever— —Just realize I belong where I am today. I'm sure Azrael and Grady—especially after the battle we went through—are understanding of that too. Most likely that want to hammer me and try to knock down a step or two and hey, that's fine! I wouldn't want them not wanting to take me out in due time, just the same as I look to take them out. If they didn't want to take me out, then they couldn't be as competitive as I think they are. The thing is? I'm waiting until June 28th. Kage isn't going down easily and he's certainly not going to risk letting himself be weakened before then. If he did, he would shed The Youth from his side and go on his own. If Kage is going to have his version of an army beside him, then it just makes sense for us to have one of our own too. I'm not Grady's best buddy nor do I ever intend to be, but if being at his side is necessary in order to take down Kage? Then that's what's going to happen. If Azrael Goeren is needed as well in order to help oust Kage and keep everyone in one piece? Then that's what needs to happen. We'll beat the heck out of each other at the end of June, I'm sure of that. I imagine those two are going to be sick of being on the same side as each other and myself, but it becomes a matter of what's a bigger priority: Let Chris Kage and The Youth keep messing around here? Or winning the EWA World Championship? I'm getting sick beyond belief of Kage's actions, so if my only way of getting another EWA World Championship shot is by teaming up with what will be two other opponents? Then I guess I have to be a good teammate. Will Azrael and Grady come to that same conclusion for their own self? … I trust them. |
