Please note, this takes place before Ozzy visits Jada in the hospital. Azrael Goeren hadn’t stayed long after the end of Battlelines. He’d only stayed long enough to grab his gear bag and change before hopping in his car and following the ambulance. She was taken to the nearest hospital and after a few hours, they’d told him the list of what she’d have to heal from. A shattered wrist. Three broken ribs along with a cracked vertebrae in her neck. Near loss of vision in her right eye. And of course, a concussion from hell. Kilminster hadn’t held back at all, but then again, neither had she. He couldn’t understand why she did it, but it didn’t matter now. Her career, at least with the EWA, was over. It would be a long time before she was in fighting shape. He sat at her bedside, listening to the beeping of her vitals. A steady heartbeat, one that kept on going even through the toughest of adversities. Sinn had been sedated by one of the nurses, it was simply easier to get her to rest. She was never one to stop moving very long. He could only think back to the days before Battlelines, how she’d kicked him out of the house and told him she would never love him. That she was only using him. Henrik knew all of that. Despite what people thought, he knew how to read behavior quite well. Still, it just befuddled him as to the reason why the Valkyrie would agree to such a match. Goeren knew she was confident she could win, at least-- Damn stubborn woman. She’d planned this. Why else would she be so damn insistent that she could beat Kilminster if only to stoke his ire? Why else would she pull herself out of the Path of the Warrior tournament? The German man reached up, wrapping his hand around hers and squeezing gently. “You are ever a puzzle, meine kleine Wikinger Blume.” She made a noise, her hand squeezing his for a moment. A dream, no doubt. He hoped it was peaceful. She’d been so distant and restless for weeks now. There was enough painkillers coursing through her system that if he kissed her, he was sure to get a contact high...and probably punched in the face. She needed to rest. He needed to rest. “You have this very bad habit of drooling while you sleep. My hand is all pruny.” Her voice was quiet, but it was enough to wake him. Sinn’s face was ever beautiful, even under the bruising around her eye. Her one wrist in a brace to keep it immobilized, was lifted to her line of sight before she grimaced and placed it back on the sheets. “I knew I broke it when I punched the cage.” Jada tried to shift, wincing as she did before looking over to Goeren. “What are you doing here?” Goeren wearily smiled at the Viking Queen, giving her hand a gentle pat. He forced that smile, but it was obvious to anyone who had known him for more than a day that it was not genuine. There was pain behind his steely blue eyes, but he quickly suppressed it. “Try not to move, Jada. You need to go back to sleep, let me go get one of the nurses so they can give you another round of Diazepam. Half a dose should take care of it.” Jada pushed herself to lean back against the pillows, slowly trying to sit up. “Look at you with all the medical knowledge.” Goeren let an authentic smile cross his face this time and rose from his seat. “When you were an addict as long as I was, you learn a few things about muscle relaxants and painkillers. Now just sit tight and…” Her hand reached for his before he can turn away. The touch of her skin was always enough to get his attention. Always made his knees buckle. “You need to go, Henrik.” “Nein, it's okay. I talked to the head nurse. Wonderful woman. She says her family is from Tacoma, wherever that is. Pretty sure it’s somewhere in Middle Earth. Anyways, that friendly Hobbit lady told me that I can stay as long as long as I’m quiet and I…” “That’s not what I meant.” Crestfallen, Henrik nodded his head and gave Sinn’s unbroken hand a tight squeeze. “Ja. I know. You made that fairly clear to me a few days ago...” “You still have work to do. You have children to take care of. You have a title to win.” “It would have been easier if you were there at my side.” “Life is never easy, trust me. I know that better than most.” “Heh. How true.” Goeren smiled down at Jada, reaching his other hand out and gently caressed the left side of her face. “It was fun for a while, wasn’t it?” “You weren’t always a pain in the ass.” “Ha! That might be the sweetest thing any woman has ever said to me.” Sliding her hair away from her face, Goeren leaned down and gently pressed his lips to the Valkyrie’s cheek. “Thank you. For everything. For helping me understand my daughter. For bringing me peace. For showing me that I could actually be the man I always hoped I could be.” He pulled away, holding back his emotions valiantly as he made his way towards the door. “In another world, this could have ended differently. Just bad luck on my part that we live in this one, ja? Auf wiedersehen, mein wikinger königin. You were the best of all of us.” “You can be better than I ever was, Henrik. Just gotta fight as hard as you can.” She could feel fatigue rearing it’s ugly head again and reclined back. The former stripper closed her eyes and exhaled a long sigh. He couldn’t be here, no matter how much he made her laugh. She would not get his hopes up that there was any possibility for a future between them, that was beyond cruel. What she’d done and forced her ex-husband to do was almost unthinkable, but it was done regardless. She turned her head to the side, wincing as a wave of pain coursed through her system. This was what she wanted. What she needed. And that was the last thought she had before she fell asleep. It wasn’t until the sun was shining through the window several hours later that she was nudged away by a nurse. “Ms. Kaine, there’s a gentleman here to see you.” “Tell Goeren--” “No, it’s not the nice German man, it’s a man from England. He--” Oh. Oh. He was here. Her pulse quickened, anxiety flooding her nerves, but Jada took another breath and nodded to the nurse from Tacoma. “Please let him in.” He’d read the letter. This was not going to be pleasant. |
