... that's what the problem is. We don't know if they want to stick with “their guy” or decide Peralta needs to either go to the bullpen or head to Colorado Springs. I wouldn't really say he's “their guy” since Stearns just got there. Okay, good point. If Melvin was still in charge, yeah, I could better understand why they would keep him around. But will Matt Garza really be much better? He was dreadful last year. He couldn't be any worse! Anderson may be no better than mediocre, but Wily Peralta just ain't gettin' it done. He's terrible! I just hope—and thanks for the call, Tommy—they don't send Davies back down when Garza returns. He's been pretty good since that first start and was lights out against St. Louis. We'll see what happens against Oakland. That's the best thing about rebuilds, watching that young talent develop. After the break, we'll look at the winning side of sports, specifically from this area—and I DON'T mean the Packers. What could I possibly be talking about? Hour two of “Wide World of Sports” is coming up. Need a refill, Dube? The door to the studio swung open as the college-aged female intern approached the radio on-air personality. Nah. Got another bottle in reserve. He took a small sip from his water bottle before moving around various sheets of paper beside his mic. Something to snack on? Still have a few slices of pizza. Only if no one else wants it. Okay... yeah... I'll—go ask... She began backing slowly out of the studio. Her expression and body language gave away her feeling uncomfortable. Something wrong, Emily? No. Nothing important. Hah... if you want to say something, say something. Rule number one about me: I don't bite. I don't mean to question the show and it's contents. It's your show and all, but— Dube crosses his arms and sits with a relaxed posture, almost welcoming this. But...? A moment of silence falls before Dube raises his eyebrows, non-verbally pleading for her to answer ASAP. At least it's the top of the hour, giving them a little longer break than normal. Are you sure wrestling's a good topic to discuss? I mean, that doesn't seem to be a str— A chuckle comes from Dube. It's fine. I bring it up occasionally and people usually call in during the segment. It's more popular than I bet you're thinking. Helps that Seton's from this area too. You're from Oshkosh too, right? You must have been asleep during that part of the orientation. They share a small laugh. Did you ever meet her? You must not be from around here. I'm at UW-Green Bay. He has another chuckle. No, no, no, no—I mean, where you're originally from. Oh! Cincinnati. Aaah... What? Did you do something with her or something? He sat in silence for a bit. Had 17 years seriously vanished as fast as a gust of wind? It wasn't a regret of time, knowing he was in mid-30's now. It wasn't a regret of “I wish I made something of myself,” he had a couple years in as a wrestler himself and has been a successful radio host during the “evening drive” time slot in the Green Bay-area since he stepped away from the squared-circle. I used to go out with her. She was my girlfriend for nearly all of high school. LAURA SETON!? I know, right? Dating a schlub like me, heh. Emily's shock turns to a “spill the gossip” excitement. What happened!?? Why aren't you with her anymore? Ah, I goofed up at the end of senior year. Oh, come on! Hey—why don't you get her on the show!? Do you know how awesome that would be?? It probably would be awesome. She certainly would have a lot to say and her longest-tenured fans were likely all in this area. There would be so much to get out of her it would probably be safe to have a week-long series of segments with her. Heck, maybe even make her a regular weekly guest. She's not doing the show. How many times have you asked her? None. Then how do you know?? Let's just say I goofed up big time. How big? I mean, I don't mean to pry. Just— She notices how uneasy he's becoming. Her excitement begins wearing off. When did you last see her? Did you ever speak to her again? He was lucky he had a positive response to those questions. That doesn't even count when Laura first appeared on wrestling television. We went about 13 years before we could be in the same room again. He wanted to shift the blame towards her. The sentence originally formulated in his head as, “... before she would see me...” Jesus! Well... if you've spoken, why not ask her? That was about four years ago and we haven't spoken since then, either. At least they had things smoothed out. Sort of. Because how much can you really say a problem was solved if you wind up back where you were in the first place? Were heads in better places—less guilt and less anger for whatever caused their rift? Probably. But that was about the only “good” thing that ever came of their reunion or whatever would be a better way to describe things. What did you do? I mean—you don't have to answer that. Yeah, I know. Reflexive questioning. I would have asked the same thing if I was you. You're going to Chicago, right? EWA and what you're going to be talking about. Are you getting a press pass or something? I don't know. I'd love to be backstage. Maybe get some taped interviews for the show or possibly set up for some of the guys to call in in the future to interview live. It'd be nice to be backstage at a wrestling event again, but I sort of just want to be a fan that night. Hang out in the audience and just watch and cheer. Is it that? Or you don't want to come face to face with Laura again? Don't you still wonder “what if?” That was the problem. Too much “What if?” Considering she's in the World Championship match, I think the last thing in the world she would want is to see me beforehand. Okay, fair enough. Just remember though—you'll be in the same building as her. Maybe not before, but how about after things? At the least, I'm pretty sure she would be back home the next day. The good news was they had talked within the last half decade. The bad news was Laura wasn't likely to give him the time of day. Who knew what ran through her head and if she even wanted to speak to him anymore? Maybe she only spoke to him again to officially end that chapter of her life. Why is life so complicated? |
