Monday, June 6, 2016 New Rochelle, New York (As the camera fades in from black, we find ourselves inside the office of Grady Smith at his training facility, the Future Factory. Grady sits at his desk in a workout outfit: an old school Grady Smith t-shirt and a pair of black shorts, feet up on the desk reading one of those old things that people his age used to read called a magazine. As the camera looks around, we can see a lot of activity happening in the gym, but the low hum of everyone talking or working out is drowned out by the song playing throughout the building, “The Eagle has Landed” by Avatar. But the focus turns back to Grady, who turns towards the entrance of his office as he hears a knock on the door. Standing in the doorway is his wife, Janelle, definitely not dressed for working out in the factory…) “I never realized that this was how you trained for title fights in the past. Reading…” (Janelle walks over and leans in to kiss Grady before spinning the magazine around to see what exactly Grady was reading…) “The Lowe’s How-To Guide for Summer Projects” “Hey, everyone has their own strategies for training. I figured, this time around, I’d train by trying to figure out how to build a fancy flower box for Christopher. Or maybe a copper privacy wall.” “Interesting song you got playing for these kids as well.” “Yeah, I can’t figure out half the stuff they listen to, with some of the newer rap that’s come out. At least this is more rock. Probably the third time I’ve listened to it as well. It’s kind of a catchy tune.” “Is it going to be your new entrance music next week?” “Funny. So what’s going on?” “I just stopped in to say hi and see if you were going to be home for dinner tonight. I’m on my way to the store now.” “Yeah, why wouldn’t I?” “Well, let me rephrase that. Will you be home in time to have dinner with me tonight? Because that would be a first since you got back from your last event in Cleveland.” (Grady puts the magazine down on the desk and looks up at his wife, who is sitting on the edge of his desk. It has been one huge whirlwind for Grady since Battlelines last week. Media interviews to discuss everything that happened at that event, from the interaction with Kage to get the title match at Battlelines 14 to winning the six man tag match to earn a second title opportunity at the Path of the Warrior pay per view to the Kilminster/Sinnocence match and what it was like to be there to watch Sinn be carried out on her own shield. Then add in working at the Factory with kids to get them ready for summer camps, and just getting in his own training… He knew that he hasn’t been home before 10pm any night since he got back home from Cleveland. It’s something he’s been struggling with this whole time since coming back and wrestling full time for the EWA. In his younger years, it was all about the wrestling, and the family came second. That was the understanding and everyone involved with the situation, from Janelle and her family to all of Grady’s non-wrestling friends, was ok with it. But this time, he was trying to take a different approach, recognizing that he didn’t NEED the business, but that the business WANTED him. That the business wasn’t his top priority. But in his attempts to slow everything down and try to enjoy the ride this time, Grady slowly started to realize that the train never slows down. So what do you do?) “Yeah, I’ll be home for dinner tonight with you, sweetheart. What time are you thinking?” “How does 6 sound?” “What time is it now?” (Janelle pulls out her phone and turns the screen on to see the time -- side note: doesn’t anyone use a watch to tell time anymore? Ask anyone what time it is, and most of them will pull out their phone to find out) “2:30” “Sounds like a plan, hon.” “It’ll be nice to finally eat dinner with my husband again.” “Oh, so I finally get to meet this strapping fellow?” “Absolutely!” (Janelle leans in and kisses Grady one last time before standing up and heading towards the doorway) “Just knock before you come in!” (Janelle flashes a smile as she leaves the office. Grady leans back and continues reading his “magazine”...) (The black image fades in to see Grady Smith standing in front of a red curtain. But something doesn’t look right with Grady. He looks… younger. His face doesn’t look as weathered. His hair is a little lighter… and longer… and, to be honest, much fuller. He looks like a completely different man. Wearing a red warmup jacket and black trunks with gold trim, he’s bouncing around with the energy of someone in their mid-20’s. He paces back and forth around in front of the curtain for a few seconds before looking directly at the camera…) “Chris Kage, I want you to take a good look at your television screen right now. Take a good, close look at my face, son. Come stand at the feet of the king, because I want you to make sure that you know exactly what you’re going to be getting into the ring against this weekend. I am what I am… as I was before, and as I always will be. And what that is, as far as you should be concerned, is your daddy. I am the man that everyone in this business looks up to. And in this orphanage of where everyone here is my child, you should shut your mouth while I’m talking, and just sit there at the table and get your homework done on Grady Smith, because you’re going to need to do all the studying you can to try and figure out just what you’re going to do against the Paragon of Virtue in this business!” “You want to sit there and run your mouth, thinking you’ve got this whole thing figured out. Trust me, kid, you haven’t figured out a thing. You don’t know anything about Grady Smith except for what you’ve seen on your television screen. And if you’re going to go by just what you’ve see, you’re going to figure out one thing very quickly… that there is nobody above me here! NOBODY! Even the God that’s above.. In this business, he’s beneath me as well! That’s right! Don’t question it because it’s true!” “Ladies and Gentlemen, your hero has returned again! And now that I’ve returned, everything is going to be ok! Well, maybe not for Chris Kage this week, because he’s going to be in for one hell of a beating! But for all of you that have felt lost because of the crap that you’ve had to watch on your television each and every week, take a good look at Grady Smith. Because I will be your shepherd. I will guide you to the promise land. I will pull you out of the darkness that surrounds you each and every day, and bring you towards that ever glowing light that is known throughout the wrestling world as Grady Smith.” “Chris Kage, my beautiful son, you continue to speak, but nobody cares to hear the words that come out of your mouth anymore. Because truly, you are the one in this equation of you and I that should have never been invited to the party. But now that you are here, let me give you one piece of advice… run. Take you, and your little buddy Alex Haven, and start running. Because now that you’ve got my attention, the hunt is on. And once you’ve got Grady Smith on your trail, like the Dog of War that I am.. I will find you, and I will eradicate you!” (Grady walks up to the camera and shoves it, sending it backwards, the picture now looking up at the ceiling as it fades to white…) (The image is back, looking at the ceiling. But this time, there are people looking down into the picture…) “Grady! You ok?” “What the hell happened?” “You must have fallen asleep, because next thing we know, we hear your chair smack the concrete with you falling back with it!” ”Holy crap… I fell asleep? These long nights are killing me!” “Yeah, I’m good. What time is it, anyways?” “4:30” “Crap, I’ve got to get home. And traffic is going to be awful at this time.” (Grady gets back to his feet as the people around him briefly scatter away. Grady opens his desk drawer to grab his car keys, closing the drawer quickly before hurriedly heading for the door.) “You guys ok until Cal gets here later?” “Yeah, we got this.” “Ok, good.” Monday, June 6, 2016 7:45 pm Grady Smith’s House (The image we find is at the dining room table inside Grady Smith’s house. Sitting at the head of the table is Grady Smith, naturally. Sitting to his left is his wife Janelle. To his right is his brother-in-law Calvin Harris. There are a few other random people also sitting around the table, but let’s be honest, we don’t know them, and they’re not really important. It look as if most people have already finished their dinners and are enjoying some post dinner beverages. Cal has a beer in front of him. Janelle has her standard night time cup of tea, and Grady appears to have a cup of coffee in front of him.) “So I says to Lou, you gonna drink that beer, or do I have to smash the bottle over your head again!” “How you two survived in Japan, I still don’t know. I think it will be one of the greatest mysteries of all time.” (Janelle stands up and starts to pick up the plates of those closest to her.) “I’m going to start cleaning up. Do you boys need anything?” “No, I think we’re good, hon. Thanks.” (As Janelle takes three or four plates towards the kitchen, Grady reaches down into his pocket and pulls out his cell phone. He reads the screen for a second…) “Excuse me, everyone. I need to take this.” (Grady stands up from the table and walks down the hallway towards his office near the front of the house. He closes the door partially before looking back down at the phone, hitting a few buttons on the screen, then putting the phone down on his desk, as he takes a seat…) “This is Grady.” “Hey Grady, this is Terry from the EWA. How are you?” “Terry! Good to hear from you.” “Same here, Grady. I apologize for calling you this late in the evening. I hope I’m not interrupting your dinner or anything.” “No, no. We just finished up. What can I help you with?” “I’m working on my hotline tonight, so I was hoping you could give me a little soundbyte on your match with Chris Kage at Battlelines that I could put on the hotline.” “Sure, not a problem. How do you want to do this?” “Just start talking. As soon as I stop talking, I’ll hit record on my tape recorder. Just talk, and when you’re done, say so.” “Ok, cool.” (Grady pauses for a second, probably fully expecting that, even though Terry says he’ll do something immediately, it probably will take him a few seconds to get everything going…) “Christopher Kage, you and I have a history that stretches back well into the past. Over 15 years we’ve known each other and competed in the squared circle against each other. So don’t consider me surprised to see you with the World Heavyweight Championship around your waist. I may have never liked you, but that doesn’t take away from the fact that you’re an incredible talent in that ring.” “But if you’re going into our match at Battlelines thinking that this will just continue from where it left off the last time you and I faced off in a one-on-one match, you will surely be mistaken. Because not only will I defeat you, but I will take from you the one thing you pride yourself on more than anything else in this world, and that’s the World Heavyweight Championship.” “The Grady Smith you think you know… the one that was the cocky kid with the mouth that always tried to bite off more than he could chew? That kid is gone, and all that’s left is this old man. But a man that’s wiser, smarter about the business, and in case you haven’t taken notice these last few weeks, still has the chops to step into that ring and hang with just about anyone.” “Enjoy your last few days in this business as the EWA World Heavyweight Champion, Christopher. The Dog of War has begun his hunt, and the hunt ends at Battlelines, when I walk out of the building with the belt around my waist.” (Grady stops for a few seconds, trying to listen to the other end of the conversation, but all we hear is crickets…) “Was that good, Terry?” “What? Oh, hi Grady. Sorry, I was just getting all of the recording information ready. Just start whenever you’re ready.” (Grady rolls his eyes as the sound is muted, but we can still see Grady talking as the camera fades to black…) |
