Changes At Horizon Hobby

For those with Spektrum systems. Horizon have announced a 15% price increase. In addition they have closed the UK branch, made 40 people in Europe redundant and will be rebranding Staufenbiel as Horizon. I understand only a selected number of shops will have agencies as they are looking primarily to deal direct with customers.
Servicing of sets will be done in Germany (as seems to have been the case for some months).

A press release was issued in Germany, this is a 'Google' Translation:
As the company Staufenbiel officially announced on January 17, 2017, Horizon Hobby GmbH, based in Barsbüttel, will be renamed Gustav Staufenbiel GmbH as of 3 April this year. The business model is reoriented within the framework of the revised Europe strategy of the American parent company Horizon Hobby. The Horizon sites France and the UK are closed. The Horizon Hobby warehouse - both for the retail and wholesale business - is bundled at the Elmshorn site, while in Barsbüttel the marketing and sales activities for Horizon Hobby Europe are taken care of. By bundling the marketing and sales activities of both companies, Horizon Hobby reacts to changing market conditions and will directly contact end customers.

"Up to now Horizon has been primarily active in the B-to-B sector in Europe, which is about to change. We will continue to cultivate our dealers' contacts, but we would like to intensify our direct dialogue with our customers, "said Holger Harms, Managing Director of Staufenbiel and designated Director of the marketing and sales activities of Horizon Hobby Europe. "In addition, we will center our forces for Europe in Barsbüttel."

The retail business is carried out under the company Horizon Hobby GmbH with a special focus on the company's own brands, including Spektrum, Blade, Losi and Staufenbiel. The Staufenbiel and Dymond brands are offered through a central onlineshop. "Apart from the name and appearance, our customers will not change much," Harms continued. Internet: www.modellhobby.de and www.horizonhobby.de.“

I heard a couple of other tidbits...
Horizon also cancelled their attendance at the Nurnberg Toy Fair
Hobbico/Revell are now distributed in Europe by the Belgium company Promodels.be
Thunder Tiger's European distributer is now Graupner/SJ

General feeling is that more changes will happen...

Cheers

The following was put out in a shop newsletter... It's a bit out of date and optomistic as the UK staff have received their redundancy notices...

Some sad news - Horizon Hobby are closing its doors in UK

'By now, you should have heard this news from your local model shop or perhaps on social media. For those of you who have not ...

As at end of March 2017, Horizon Hobby will no longer have an office in the UK. Head office for Europe will now be Horizon Germany. With the office in France having already closed, it was just a matter time before UK was next. If thats not enough bad news, not all current official resellers in the UK will be invited over to Horizon Germany. At this time, no official notification has been received on who the new official resellers will be in the UK.

Hopefully Horizon will make a public announcement soon on how this effects us modellers here in the UK.

We are still hopeful that this decision to close the UK offices can be reversed, not only for us modellers but also for the folks that will be losing their jobs! '
