Name: Lavanya Aliases/Nickname: Lava Country of Origin: Emira; 1/4 Agrysian. Languages: Emiran, some Jerrat pidgin. Gender/Orientation: Female/Aromantic Asexual Age: 23 Birthday: 27 Lastmoon Occupation: N/A Religion: Kumatra, specifically the Children of the Sky hidden sect. Considers herself a Daughter of Ravos. Height: 5'7" Build: Lean and fit, with densely corded muscles. She is all hard lines and sharp points, but does not appear skeletal or unreasonably thin. Hers is a solid form. Skin Tone: A golden bronze deeply tanned. Hair: A thick, dense mess of dark brown hair that is coarse and slightly curly. It shines mahogany when caught in a ray of sunlight, and appears nearly black in most other lights. Using a simple cloth headband and several strategically placed small braids, she keeps it mostly in check. She ties the ends up, but allows the rest to hang down her back; as it has never been cut, when unbound it falls to below her knees. Eyes: A dark brown, with golden glints, sort of like tigereye. Identifying Marks: Three tattoos of dots beneath her left eye; the third one is smeared slightly, with an unfinished look that adds to her wild appearance. Several scars on her hands, arms and legs, often thin and fine, from sword practice. A single jagged scar on her left cheek, below her cheek bone and close to her ear, from being slapped by a hand with a ring on. Appearance: She wears the clothes of a male Emiran, from the wrap around shirt to the boots. She does own a single blouse and skirt, both simply decorated, but she almost never wears them. She walks boldly, and almost always keeps a hand on or near one of her weapons. Family: Lavanya has several living relatives, but is only on speaking terms with her mother. She has not spoken to or seen her father, any of her three older sisters, or her grandmother since she was cast out by the family at 10. She hasn't claimed the family name once in all that time.
Best Friends: Lavanya has no living friends. Significant Other(s): N/A Other Relationships: Lavanya's closest relationship was with her mentor.
Relationship Status: Single. Personality: Lavanya has a prickly, prideful personality. She is severe with others and herself, has exceedingly high standards that she trains tirelessly to meet, and is always very serious about her martial arts. Her faith is a deep well spring within her, from which she draws great comfort. A lack of meaningful social interaction during her formative years, and certain unpleasant life experiences, have made her both slow to open up and reluctant to trust other people. She generally judges people more harshly than they deserve, and while she knows this, she finds it hard to overcome her initial judgements. Motivations: Lavanya's faith motivates her, partially. Another strong factor is her anger at her parents, for casting her out, and her country men for killing her mentor, and her need to somehow balance these wrongs by doing that which she believes is right. Goals: To honor Ravos and Tanala by demonstrating the strength and wisdom of serving as a vassal of harmony between their domains, rather than strictly dividing into two camps in rejection of their great union. Fears: Dying a bad death. Trying and working vainly without a purpose. Being consumed by anger or a need for revenge. Being wrong, for any reason and in anyway. Losing control of her powers. Hobbies/Talents/Skills: Lavanya is very good at reciting and chanting the epic poems of Emira, especially relating to Tanala, and it is one of the few areas where she acknowledges Tanala above Ravos. Her chanting sounds something like this (minus the instrumental accompaniment, and in Emiran, of course.) She has no real hobbies, outside of practicing martial arts and chanting poems, although she does a great deal of time contemplating the religious texts, and would happily engage in a deep and meaningful discussion of the same with anyone, if she could do so without risking her life. She also has a sort of wild instinct, strongly developed by years living in a forest near a rocky coast. She can track and hunt, predict the weather from time to time, and vanish into the wilderness with barely a trace. She is ambidextrous, and freely changes which hand she uses to hold her weapons. Combat Style: Lavanya has spent more than fifteen years training intensely in martial arts. Her primary combat style is hand to hand, but she also knows how to use tonfa, a long bow, and a sword. She developed spontaneous magic, specifically evocation, when young, and has developed some level of control over it. This magic is limited in that it only allows her to create/control lightning, and only to an extent. The price of this power is also fairly high, so she uses it sparingly. Tactics: Lavanya is fairly good with a bow, and almost never misses what she hits. However, she prefers to get up close, and fight melee style, adjusting her weapons as the situation requires. She recognizes that pure strength victories are beyond her, so she goes for fast and vicious. She strikes vital areas, relies on multiple hits on joints and nerve centers, and dodges or turns aside those strikes she can. She uses hands for non series combat, such as that arising from disputes or insults. She uses tonfa when she wants to be nonlethal, although sometimes her blows go awry. She only uses her sword when the fight is to the death. On very rare occasions, she also uses her magic in a fight. Backstory: Lavanya was born in Emira to the ravvi Raedirim. Her grandmother was Agrysian, and while the family honored Emiran culture, there were traces of Agrysian customs in their behavior. Her father was the eldest of his siblings, all of whom were male. However, Lavanya was the youngest of six daughters, a minor point of disappointment to her father. She demonstrated a gift for physical combat at a very young age, and as he did not yet have any sons, her father decided to teach her a little hand to hand. He constantly made it clear he was only doing so to keep his hand in, so that when he had a son he had some practice teaching a child. When she was ten years old, however, Lavanya was strike by lightning. She survived, and developed spontaneous magic of the evocation style that was linked closely to lightning. Her grandmother was horrified, and took her away to mark her with the nakta dots. However, Lavanya's mother walked in partway through the tattooing, and pulled Lavanya away, causing the uneven look in the third dot. She refused to let the Grandmother perform such a barbaric custom on her daughter. Unfortunately, Lavanya's grandmother still yielded a great deal of influence over her sons, and Lavanya's father agreed to cast her out. Her mother, who also had some influence with her father, convinced him to let her take Lavanya somewhere. Unbeknownst to Lava's father or family, Mira was a follower of the Children of the Sky. She gave Lava into the care of one tavi of that order, a Kishor Sirinue, who raised Lavanya from that time. They lived deep in the forest, and rarely saw another person. Kishor continued her martial arts training, even teaching her how to use weapons. He also provided her religious instruction, teaching her from both holy books and telling her the truth of the kumatra faith. It was during this time that Lavanya realized she was a Daughter of Ravos. She wanted to become a tava, although she was a bit old to begin training as one. Her true purpose was to become a divine mage, in some attempt to alleviate her shame at the magic she was born with. However, that dream was dashed when she was 17. There was a local martial arts competition, in which young men of 16 and 17 could compete and show off their skills prior to applying for military service. Lavanya sneaked away from the forest and took part in the competition. It was a three week affair, and despite her skills and her right to participate, as any citizen of Emira aged 16 or 17 could do, she was treated horribly by both judges and other participants. Still, she managed to advance to the second to last round, winning each fight despite the judges constantly ruling against her for no cause. She faced the tournaments favorite, an unusually tall Emiran, who had been particularly cruel to her. After a particularly dirty move by her opponent, offending Lavanya's sense of fair play and sportsmanship, accompanied by a vile insult, Lavanya lost control of her magic. She sent a bolt of lightning out from her palm when she struck him in the middle of the chest, and it hit his heart, killing him instantly. There was visible sign of her magic, so the judges didn't know what to do at first. Lavanya fled the second she realized what had happened, the shame of remains with her to this day. She returned to the forest, and swore to never leave again. She even refused to accompany Kishor in his occasional trips to nearby villages, something she had once begged to do. She also gave up her dreams of being a divine mage, because she knew she'd never be able to exert the level of self-control and discipline necessary. Nonetheless, she spent extra long hours trying to gain greater control of her own magic, as she was equally determined never to lose control like that again. Unfortunately, her life in the forest with Kishor could not continue forever. Shortly before her twenty third birthday, a small military expedition, just a squad, really, accompanied by a tavi, hunted down the old man for preaching heresy, and killed him while Lavanya was off training alone. She returned two days later, and find the ruins of their home. Furious, but in better control of herself than years before, she salvaged what she could from the house. Then she hunted down the squad and the tavi, and using a combination of wood craft, combat skills, and far more magical power than she'd ever used before, she managed to kill them all before they could leave the forest. With no where to return to, and several reasons to make herself scarce, she has left the forest that was her home for 13 years, and the country of her birth. She journeyed to Jerrat, where her grandparents met, in search of some new direction in life. Edited by Murasaki, Oct 26 2017, 10:56 AM.
