Jaq's alma mater was hard won experience in the field. His formal education had ended after he had learned his letters when he was a small lad. He felt no particular way about this in the grand scheme of things, it was a fact of his existence. There was no grudge against those who could afford an education and he knew that his own life was not suited to everyone. As long as he kept to the topics he was more acquainted with, he wouldn't entirely embarrass himself. As he entered the foyer of Highwater Academy for the Arcane Arts he took in the elaborate architecture, the muted but respectable art pieces and somber atmosphere. He knew that he was out of place, armored and armed and not enough magic talent to fill a thimble. He moved forward looking for some sort of guard or receptionist. The only manned desk he could find had a young man sitting behind it, his nose buried in a thick tome and loose sheets of parchment that were his own notes taking up the rest of the desk. Jaq watched him read the same page twice before copying a few lines and scratching some kind of formula. Jaq put his helmet down on the table, the clatter causing the lad to look up at him with a wide eyed look. Jaq bit down on the sense of age that overwhelmed him when faced with a fresh faced student, "I need to talk to Necromancy Professor." That had not been the right way to say that apparently. The kid's eyes bugged out and he stammered and mumbled his way into intelligibility. "We don't...that's illlegal...I wouldn't....I don't...ah...." Eventually parsing the broken response Jaq looked past the student and growled in frustration--which did not help the kid's disposition. He was aware that a heavily armed man could be intimidating-especially to someone who didn't know how to shoot lightning from their fingertips yet. "Well, the docks were attacked by zombies last night. Who do I talk to if I want answers?" "I...I don't ... ah..." He looked around for some kind of help and found the foyer not providing anything. He looked down at his book and somehow that provided some kind of insight, "There was an undead attack years ago. History. Talk to the History Department." Jaq looked at the kid, then at the many exits, "Which way?" "That way." Jaq coaxed some more specific directions out of him and the mercenary picked up his helm and moved on. It was another day in the semester, post-class. Brin Ioca sat at the desk in her office, a small room in a hallway, grading papers. Her door was propped open, so hearing a rather heavy set of footsteps came from far away once it entered the wing was of no surprise to her. She only glanced at the hallway once it got closer. The source of the footsteps finally appeared in front of her door, and it was no student, that she knew for sure. She raised an eyebrow. "May I help you?" Brin asked in a polite but cautious voice, still holding her pen as she placed her free hand on top of the assignment she was reading over. |

Stepping into the small office, Jaq tried not to loom over the professor who was professing in some fashion. The exact details of a professor's job were vague notions at best to Jaq, but he understood sages and war wizards well enough. He set his helmet down on a table and held onto his hands so as to not rest them on his sword, which was something that people found threatening from time to time. "Good morning ma'am. I'm Kriger Jaqen. I wanted to ask about Necromancy." |

Brin leaned back in her chair and put her pen down. The history professor folded her arms and looked up at the man. "Mr. Kriger..." She addressed him as if he was another, adult student. "You are aware that necromancy is forbidden, yes? Even if it wasn't, I doubt I'm the person to ask, as I am an illusionist, and a history teacher besides. Unless your question has to do with necromancy's place in history?" |

Looking around the office, Jaq sat down on a chair, "Mr. Jaqen, actually." "I'm not sure if you know, but last night a few hundred of the lake's finest drenched corpses stood up and went for a walk. I don't like being bitten by zombies." Jaq presented his gauntlet and the mouth shaped dent that still made it uncomfortable to wear, "Its unpleasant to understate it. So, I guess, yeah. I do want to know about the history here, because if its just something that happens every now and again maybe its not a big deal except to an ornery old man, but if this is unexpected then someone who doesn't care if Necromancy is forbidden is having a jolly good time." |

"An undead appearance?" Brin's patient expression faded into one of worry. "Well...the last necromancer, the last prolific one, is often thought to be Teyrinashi. You may remember her as the last queen of Tivash. Of course, Tivash isn't really around anymore, and Jerrat stands on the old capital. There's a reason necromancy is hated and feared, and a lot of it is owed to her. The laws and taboo would be enough to make most necromancers think twice. Key word being most." |

Now he was getting somewhere. A high ranking member of the nobility was a necromancer and no doubt like all things related to necromancy it went to the pot. It made sense in his head so far, but it wasn't enough to go on. Jaq frowned as he mouthed the word, "Tivash. So, the caverns under the city are the old city streets or somesuch. That makes sense with what I've seen so far. The queen was a necromancer? How did that go?" |

Brin wasn't about to give this gentleman a lecture, but she did choose to answer as if Jaq was asking in her own class. "Queen Teyrinashi held onto power for a good number of years, that is, until the Hallowed Hand rose up from her own citizens and defeated her. Her heir, well--he went missing. Nobody found the body, so news of his death was never quite official, but popular consensus was that he died in the coup. The queen's brother was put on the throne afterwards." |

Jaq grimaced, it was very easy to draw a couple of conclusions that were not supported with any real information, but he was interested in the angle. He leaned forward in his chair, clasping his hands together as he thought it out, "The lost scion of a royal necromancer. That's motive and means: provided they exist at all. Does Queen Teyrinashi have a crypt in Jerrat? See, by all accounts, the zombies were headed in a singular direction. They were stopped before getting to that location I presume, but maybe there's something there." |

"She had no crypt," answered Brin with a shake of her head. "Her body was to be cremated after death--I suppose you can guess why. If she had one, though, it would be under the city. However, even if it did exist, no one knows for sure where it would be now, considering the numerous times Jerrat has been burned and sacked." |

"It makes sense." Jaq admitted begrudgingly. He shifted in his chair to sit back and tap his fingers against the pommel of his sword. "Mm. I know its not really your job to help me investigate this, but I don't have many leads at this point. The academy doesn't have one of those restricted libraries with all the evil books in them, does it?" |

Brin's expression changed with Jaq's question, a smile and chuckle lighting up her features. "Even if we did have them, they'd be off-limits. I hope you understand, of course...but you do have me curious. Where exactly did these undead show up? And when did they, if you don't mind telling me again?" She leaned forward in her chair with her elbows on the desk. |

Jaq nodded, "It was yesterday evening. Sun had well set. I was at a small tavern on the docks, not enjoying their watery ale when they started rising from the water. I can't be for certain when, because I didn't see their initial rise. I was made aware of it by the screaming. People stumbling over each other trying to get away. A man burst in and yelled that the dead had risen. Normally you learn to ignore these things, but undead have this...perversion to them that leaves its mark on the face of those who see it." Tapping his gauntlet, Jaq turned his attention to a wall, "So, we organized some fighting walls and pushed them back until they stopped coming. The city guards show up and took over the investigation. I suspect they're following the trail of bodies. At least, that's what I would be doing if I was them. Not being them though, I thought I'd look into the source." |

"I see. Well, thank you for coming here with that information, for what it's worth." Brin nodded, and held her hand to her chin with her pointer finger under her lip. "Would it be too much to ask you to bring me to the first place you saw them? I would like to see if I can find the point from where they originated." |

Jaq nodded as he stood up, grabbing his helmet and turning it around in his hands before tucking it back under his arm, "I can do that. It was right outside the Drunken Duke Tavern. Should I meet you there later?" |

"How about two hours from now? That should give me enough time to finish my work here." And feed her cat, but Brin didn't feel the need to mention that to Jaq. "Farewell, and thank you." |

Jaq nodded at the mage and took his leave. Donning his helmet as he walked through the academy halls he made his way out to the streets. He needed to figure out what his next step was going to be. |
