Chapter 1

Veronica Star sighed in frustration as she finished getting ready for school one morning. Trixie has it better than I do... she thought as she pulled on her usual white shirt with a pink star in the center and her matching pink short skirt.

Lost in thought and not even paying attention to what she was doing, her left index fingernail got snagged in one of the loose lines of her socks and it broke, causing the blonde to cry out in even more frustration.

I’m such a loser!! She thought as she rushed out of the house in order to catch the school bus that had just pulled up.

“My book report!!” she realized with wide eyes as she took a seat near the front.

She’d barely had any time to finish it the night before. She was going to be in for it, she just had the faint feeling as she stared out into the scenery. The bus pulled to a stop in front of the school and Veronica lingered a little, resulting as being the last student off the bus. She hung her head as she entered the school and made her way to Mr. Crocker’s class.

And as Veronica predicted, she had gotten a ‘stern talking to’. She hung her head again as Mr. Crocker asked her to stay after class. The rest of the day seemed to go on forever as Veronica slightly payed attention to Mr. Crocker preach to the other kids about non important things like silly superstitions and the ever on going existence of Fairy God Parents.

Then the bell rang.

Veronica sighed as she watched her fellow classmates run out the door. She stood up and slowly walked over to Mr. Crocker’s desk. He arched an eyebrow as he stared at her. “The book report. Why didn’t you write it?”

Veronica shrugged. “I don’t know.”

She read the book, Treasure Planet, and she’d planned to write the paper, she’d just never gotten around to it. “You should have written it, Miss Star. This isn’t like you. Have you been hanging around with Turner again?”

Veronica’s eyes widened upon hearing her crush’s last name. “...No, sir, I haven’t. Believe me, I just haven’t had the time-“

He cut her off with a shake of his head. “I don’t want to fail you, Veronica.”

“Maybe I could hand it in late ” Veronica suggested in a rushed voice. “It wouldn’t take me long to write it, Mr. Crocker. I’ve already read the book ”

Mr. Crocker paused momentarily. He seemed to be studying her. “If you hand it in Monday, I’ll accept it.”

“Gee, thanks,” Veronica muttered with a roll of her eyes as she stomped out of the classroom.

Guess I can cross going out with Chad tomorrow night... she thought, heaving a sigh. She had no idea Chad was waiting for her outside the classroom. “Chad! What are you doing here? ”

“Waiting for you,” he replied with a small smile.

Veronica stepped closer and was about to kiss him when Chad pulled back a little. Veronica stared back, a little shocked, but said nothing as she tried to read his expression. What’s his problem? She asked herself.

She swallowed hard and was about to tell him she couldn’t go with him Saturday night, when he spoke up, “I...can’t go out Saturday night,” he mumbled, turning his gaze away from her.

“Excuse me? Why not?” Veronica demanded, unable to hold back her surprise.

He hesitated as they slowly made their way to Veronica’s locker. Chad stopped walking and stuck his hands into his pants pockets. “Just can’t,” he muttered.

“Chad, what’s going on?” Veronica asked, trying her best to remain calm. “What’s happening Saturday night?”

He shrugged. “Made other plans,” he replied. His expression suddenly changed. Now he looked really embarrassed. “Listen, Veronica...”

She waited for him to go on, but he didn’t.

Veronica felt a sick feeling form in the pit of her stomach as she stared at him. “Are you...breaking up with me?” she asked.

She had really counted on Chad. Things had been tough on her. She had needed him to keep her on a steady course.

She felt so depressed, so low. She didn’t need any more bad news.

“Well, are you?” she demanded.

Chad nodded, his eyes locked on Veronica’s. “Yeah, I guess.”
“But WHY? ” Veronica cried, unable to keep her cool any longer.

“It’s just too much.”

Veronica stared at him for a few minutes, then grabbed his left arm. “I don’t get it. At least tell me why, Chad. I really don’t get it.”

She saw that her fingernails started digging into his skin. Chad pulled away sharply and took a few steps back.

“Chad!!”

“Listen, I’ll call you later or something,” He announced as he started backing down the long, empty hall. “Okay? Call you later. Sorry. Sorry, Veronica!”

He turned and hurried away, taking long strides, not even glancing back at the shocked Veronica.

Why didn’t he explain? She asked herself, tears forming in her eyes as she grabbed her stuff from her locker and slammed the door shut. She hurried out of the school.

Everyone else had already left. The bus had already picked up the students and was now making its daily route through Dimmsdale. Veronica sighed heavily, knowing that she would have to walk home now.

She started going down the school steps, yet she stopped upon seeing Trixie Tang. Her best friend. The black-haired girl gave a friendly wave as she made her way towards Veronica.

Yes, Trixie had it all. She even had Veronica’s crush, Timmy Turner, as her boyfriend. Lucky, popular, Trixie Tang. She had it all.

Veronica smiled a little and ran over to her friend, hugging her tightly. “Trixie, it’s been such a horrible day!!” she blurted out, letting the tears run freely down her cheeks.

Trixie was understanding and she knew Veronica so well. They had no secrets from each other, none at all..

“My life, it’s all falling apart today,” Veronica told her. “Everything. I just feel so out of control. So...miserable.”

“My life, too,” Trixie whispered back. “Such a bad time. Me, too, Veronica. Me, too.”

Veronica let go of her and took a step back. She wiped the tears from her cheeks with both hands and stared at Trixie in surprise. “You too?” She repeated. “You’re having a bad time, too?”

Trixie nodded. A mysterious gleam crossed her eyes as she smiled mischievously at Veronica. “But I have an idea. I know what we can do.”

“An idea?” Veronica repeated. “What kind of idea?”

Trixie’s eyes lit up again, her face glowing with excitement. “Let’s switch bodies!!”

I dunno if you like it so far, but here's the next chapter...

Chapter 2

Is she serious? Not that I would mind, but she actually wants to switch bodies with me? Veronica asked herself as she followed Trixie down the streets of Dimmsdale...to the Dimmsdale woods.

“Where are we going?” Veronica asked upon entering the woods.

Trixie pointed past an old, tall looking tree. “It’s right up there, I think.”

“What is? Why are you being so secretive?” Veronica demanded.

Trixie turned and grinned. “It’s a mysterious place,” she replied, taking Veronica’s hand. “Stop asking so many questions and follow me.”

“Are we really going to do it?” Veronica couldn’t help but ask. “Are we really going to switch bodies?”

Trixie glanced back at Veronica with a slight frown. “You want to do it, don’t you?” she asked softly.

Veronica nodded, thinking about her day...and Chad....her messed up life. Yes. She wanted to get away. To get as far away from herself as she could. Yes, she wanted to trade places with Trixie. She wanted to trade lives...well, for a while, anyway.

Yes. Trixie had it easy. She even had her crush, Timmy Turner as her boyfriend. She’d always wondered what it would be like dating him. Now she finally had the chance.

“I think it’s right up there,” Trixie called back to her.

A bird sailed over the girls’ heads, letting out a long, sorrowful cry. Veronica stopped dead in her tracks upon hearing the cry. “It sounded so human. Like a human child crying.”

The bird let out another sorrowful cry, which made Veronica stop and shiver. “Don’t chicken out, Veronica. Don’t chicken out now. You want to do this, I know you do,” Trixie spoke softly in a more serious tone of voice.

Veronica stared at her. “I’m coming with you. I’m not chickening out.”

She followed Trixie past some shrubs, leading the girls to a long stone wall. Built of smooth, gray stones, the wall reached over a foot or so over their heads.

“Daddy described this wall,” Trixie spoke up, a small smile on her face. “Daddy told me where it was, told me the story of how it came to be built and how it got its incredible powers.”

Veronica swallowed hard, staring straight ahead at the wall. Deep cracks crisscrossed its surface like roads on a map. The plaster between the stones was chipped and broken.

“The wall is this old, huh?” she asked.

Trixie nodded. “No one knows how old it is.”

“And who built it?”

“No one knows that, either. At least that’s what Daddy told me. He said it’s called the Changing Wall. He said that over a hundred years ago, evil people came to Dimmsdale woods to use the wall and change their bodies, To switch bodies with unwilling victims,” Trixie explained.

“You mean they forced people to change bodies with them?”

Trixie nodded. “That’s how they escaped from paying for crimes they had committed.”

Veronica stared at the wall. “Wow,” she muttered, turning her gaze back to Trixie. “How did your Dad find out about this?”

“From the Mayor of Dimmsdale,” Trixie replied simply. “It was the coming of the first election and Daddy wanted to know of any past secrets Dimmsdale had. Mainly, he blackmailed the Mayor into telling him or it would be one less vote he had. And you know how my Daddy is with creating a crowd.”

Veronica nodded as she watched Trixie run a hand gingerly over a smooth gray stone on the wall. Veronica reached her hand up to touch the wall, but quickly drew it back.

Trixie snickered at this. “It’s only stones and plaster, Veronica. It won’t bite you.”

“H-how does it work?”

“Daddy explained it all. It’s really so simple,” Trixie replied. “We climb up on the wall, we hold hands and we jump off, down onto the other side. And when we land on the other side of the wall-“

“When we land, we’re switched?” Veronica interrupted.

Trixie nodded, smiling brightly. “When we land, we will be switched. Your mind will be in my body, and my mind will be in your body. When people look at me, I’ll look like you and everyone will think I’m you.”

Veronica stared at her best friend, letting the words sink in. Then she raised her eyes to the wall. “You really want to do this?” she asked Trixie.

“Come on, we have to try it,” She replied with a shrug of her shoulders. She took Veronica’s hand and squeezed it. “It’s so simple, Veronica. A simple jump. We have to try it. We really have to.”

She then raised her hands toward the top of the wall. “Give me a boost,” She instructed.

Veronica hoisted Trixie onto the top of the wall. It took Trixie a while to regain her balance. “It’s kind of bumpy up here,” she warned, lowering herself onto her knees. “The wall is so narrow and cracked. Be careful, Veronica. Be careful not to fall off.”

She reached down with both hands to help pull the blond girl up. Veronica grabbed hold of Trixie’s hands and Trixie pulled her to the top. The two girls rested for a few minutes before slowly standing up and turned to face the other side.

Veronica took Trixie’s hand and swallowed hard. Can I do this? Can I really do this? She asked herself. A simple jump, that’s all there is to it. A simple jump, and my life will be changed.

The two girls exchanged looks as they squeezed each other’s hand. Veronica lowered her eyes to the ground. “Ready?” Trixie asked.

“Ready,” Veronica replied without hesitation.

She squeezed Trixie’s hand and took a deep breath.

And they both jumped.

Thanks, I'm glad you like it...

And, if Trixie seems a bit OOC in the story...sorry...it deals with the plotline...

Chapter 3

Veronica hit the ground hard, landing on both feet. Pain shot up from her ankles and she dropped to her knees. Breathing hard, she shook the pain away and slowly stood up.

Had it worked? Had their jump to the other side of the wall made them change their bodies?

She turned to face Trixie, yet she found herself staring at her own body. Trixie had vanished. “Trixie?”

Her mouth-Veronica’s mouth dropped open as she stared back at her. Veronica lowered her eyes to examine herself. She was wearing Trixie’s clothes-the short-sleeved pink shirt, the white skirt, the white socks and the white shoes. “Oh, wow,” Veronica murmured, running a hand over her hair...her long black hair. She felt the headband at the top.

I’m Trixie, she realized, smiling brightly. I’m Veronica in Trixie’s body!

Both girls were giggling now, both staring at each other, wide-eyed, not believing it. Staring and giggling.

Neither one of them said anything. Both girls started laughing hard, tossing back their heads and laughing up at the sky. Veronica lowered her eyes and stared as Trixie raised her hands to her cheeks. Both girls were still laughing, tears of laughter running down their cheeks.

Suddenly, both girls hugged each other, holding onto one another tightly. Laughing and hugging, laughing and crying at the same time. The two started spinning. Holding onto each other, they started to spin in a wild, joyful dance. Spinning faster and faster. Veronica and Trixie. Trixie and Veronica. Switched. Whirling together. Together. Not one, not the other. Whirling and laughing. So much joy between the two friends.

And then, it ended a the sudden jump that started it. Both girls dropped to their knees, breathing hard. Both girls gazed at each other with solemn expressions. The laughter had vanished, as they realized what they had done.

They had jumped more than just a few feet. They had jumped into new lives. Jumped into each other’s lives. “We can’t tell anyone,” Trixie started in a hushed whisper. “Not anyone, Veronica.”

“Call me Trixie,” Veronica told her, a wide grin on her face. “I’m you, now. Call me by your name.”

Trixie hesitated. “I still think of myself as Trixie, even though I look like Veronica now,” she replied.

“You’re right,” Veronica agreed. “We can’t tell anyone. No one would believe it. We’ll live each other’s lives for awhile-“

“And when we get tired of it,” Trixie interrupted, “we’ll come back to the Changing Wall, and we’ll change back.”

“Yes,” Veronica quickly agreed. She suddenly felt a pang of guilt.

“What’s wrong?” Trixie asked. She must have seen the sudden expression change.

“I won’t want to change back,” Veronica confessed. “My life is the pits. I think you made a bad deal, Trixie.”

“Veronica, don’t worry about it. I think-“

“But my parents are so awful! Always alert, always waiting to catch me in some kind of trouble. And...and Chad-“

“What about Chad?” Trixie asked softly.

“I told you he broke up with me,” she replied. “So, you won’t have a boyfriend.”

Trixie just smiled, he blue eyes catching a mysterious gleam of excitement. “Maybe I’ll try to win him back...”

“And now I finally have Timmy,” Veronica continued, still feeling a little guilty. “Timmy is such a cool guy. How do you feel about that, Trixie? How do you feel about me going out with Timmy, now?”

Trixie merely shrugged. “Veronica, this was my idea, remember? I knew exactly what I was getting into.”

Veronica opened her mouth to reply, but there didn’t seem to be any more for her to say. “We’d better get home,” Trixie spoke up.

“My mom will be waiting for you at the door. You’d better have a good excuse ready,” Veronica warned.

“I’ll just tell her we jumped off a wall and switched bodies and that’s why I’m late,” Trixie joked humorously.

Both girls laughed once again. Veronica stretched her arms above her head and took a few steps over the grass in her new body. She still felt awkward. The legs moved differently. The feet were smaller. Walking should be natural, she told herself. But I guess I’m just not used to this new body.

A few more steps were taken as Veronica glanced back at the wall. In the fading light, it appeared to be a gray blur, just a dark cloud. If she didn’t squint, she couldn’t see it at all.

As if it didn’t exist.

Neither girl said much of anything as they made their way through the woods back onto the streets of Dimmsdale. They seemed to be lost in their own thoughts, thinking about their new lives, getting used to their new bodies.

The girls walked on in silence, until they were about a block away from Veronica’s house. “Good luck!” Veronica called, waving her goodbye.

“Good luck,” Trixie’s voice echoed back to her as Veronica watched Trixie run down the street to Veronica’s house.

Veronica then turned and made her way to Trixie’s house, deep in thought. Can I really fool Trixie’s parents? Can I really make the Tangs think I’m their daughter? What about Timmy? Will I be able to fool him?

So many questions filled Veronica’s mind as she hesitated at the bottom of Trixie’s driveway and stared up at the tall, fancy looking house. Remember, Veronica, don’t act crazy, she warned herself. Trixie is never crazy. You’re the crazy one. Trixie’s sweet and innocent.

She took a deep breath and made her way up to the house. The front door was open halfway, she pulled open the screen door and stepped into the small entryway.

“Hi, I’m home!” Veronica called. “Sorry I’m so late!”

No reply.

The car was in the driveway, the Tangs had to be home.

“Where are you?” Veronica called again.

She started to walk into the huge living room and stopped dead in her tracks in the doorway, letting out a sharp gasp. She blinked several times, but the gruesome scene refused to go away.

Veronica grabbed the doorframe with both hands and stared down in horror at the dark puddles of blood. The slashed bodies sprawled on the floor.

And then, she opened her mouth and let out a shrill scream.

_________________________

Chapter 4

Veronica’s legs started trembling so violently that she fell and landed on her knees. Her whole body shuddered. She fought back the nausea that choked her throat.

Trixie’s parents lay dead on the living room carpet, on their backs. Their bodies slashed and ripped. Their clothes cut and soaked with blood. Eyes staring blankly up at the ceiling.

And the blood...the puddles...so dark and wide...beneath their cut, twisted bodies like wine-colored rafts. Like deep, dark holes in the newly applied blue carpet.

The Tang’s, Trixie’s parents, murdered. Dead on the living room floor. “Trixie. Trixie. Trixie.” Veronica must have said her name about ten times now without realizing it.

She didn’t even know how long she remained there at the living room doorway, on her knees, trembling all over, blinking rapidly as she stared on in horror.

Staring at the slashed bodies of Trixie’s parents. Repeating her friend’s name over and over in a low chant. “Trixie. Trixie. Trixie. Trixie. Trixie. Trixie.”

Waves of red rushed before her eyes. Hot waves of red blood washed over her, blinding her, almost choking her. “Trixie. Trixie. Trixie.”

Rubbing her eyes, trying to rub away the ugly scene of horror, Veronica struggled to her feet and staggered to the door. “Go tell Trixie,” she mumbled.

She couldn’t think of anything else. The horror was just too fresh for her, the blood too red. “Go tell Trixie.”

She stumbled out the front door, her new body still feeling strange. She basically had to concentrate on placing one foot in front of the other. Trixie and I will have to switch back now, Veronica realized. We’ll have to return to that gray wall in the woods and switch back.

Poor Trixie.

She wanted to try a new life. But now...

Every time Veronica blinked, she saw the dark puddles on the blue carpet, saw the Tangs’ blank, staring eyes. Saw their clothes all cut...all cut...

Somehow she made it back to her house. The sun had lowered behind the houses, cooling the air, yet Veronica was drenched in sweat. She must have run the whole way, she was gasping for breath, her chest heaving up and down as she crossed the street to her own house. Over the front lawn, onto the front porch.

“Trixie! Trixie! ” Her voice sounded breathless and shrill as she frantically called her name. She stopped outside the front door, stopped to catch her breath and to think.

How could she tell her own best friend what she had seen in her living room? How could she tell her?

How?
