Poke'mon; A look back at a surprising classic

I used to play the Poke'mon games and watch the show religiously when I was younger, but I lost interest - I kind of moved on, feeling they were a bit...kiddy. But then a couple of years ago, I just decided - completely randomly - to play Poke'mon Red again for the first time in ages. I was amazed to discover that the game really was as great as I remebered it - since then I've acquired all the Poke'mon games released for the GBA and now Diamond and Pearl for DS (still need MD Blue and the two new MD games).

To celebrate the 10th Anniversary of the Aussie release of the games, Seasons 1-6 of the Anime have been re-released on DVD in box-sets. On a whim - having not seen the show since maybe 2000, 2001 at the latest - I grabbed Season 1 of the series.

I haven't stopped watching it since. It's surprisingly compelling, and fun - I enjoy Poke'mon for the same reason that I still enjoy Rugrats, and The Weekenders, and Hey Arnold, and all those other great pieces of my youth. Anyone can make some crap for kids: it takes something special to make something for kids that endures and remains appealing years later. Go on YouTube and watch some old Sesame Street (particularly the stuff with Henson and Oz as Ernie and Bert) for an example.

Anyway - anyone else have memories of this, or have been enjoying it recently?

I was into Pokemon a little bit back in the day and I was the one that got my younger brothers into it, but they were way more into it than I was after that and my interest in the show died down after about half way through the second season. Nevertheless, I'll always like Pokemon to a degree and even though I never owned any of the actual Pokemon games on gameboy, I always like to use Pikachu in Super Smash Bros. because I've always had the easiest time using him.

I did also see the first movie in the theatre several years ago but I personally thought that one was a disappointment.

Pokemon was the first anime I watched non stop whenever it was on. Back when it was only 150, I memorized the whole Poke-rap. The games were of course what got me interested and I was part of the initial craze in the late '90's into the early 00's and continued watching. Somewhere along the line I lost interest though, and I don't know why. Maybe it's just because I've gotten into other anime. Oh well, for those years, Pokemon, while another one of those cheesy dubs looking back, it still had some interest that kept me hooked for a little more than five years of my teenage life.
