Japan hit by large earthquake A powerful earthquake has struck off Japan, shaking buildings in Tokyo for several minutes and forcing people out of their homes, witnesses said. Japan issued its most serious tsunami warning, saying a wave as high as 6m (20ft) could strike the coast near Miyagi prefecture. Reports initially reported a quake of magnitude 7.9 but have since been upgraded to an 8.8-magnitude quake, which struck about 250 miles (400km) from Tokyo at a depth of 20 miles. Tsunami warnings have been issued. Eric Due from the Japan Times explained what happened when the quake struck and said he saw high rise buildings sway in Tokyo. VIDEO HERE Tsunami hits north-eastern Japan after massive quake A massive earthquake has hit the northeast of Japan triggering a tsunami that has caused extensive damage. Japan's TV showed cars, ships and even buildings being swept away the Fukushima prefecture, after the 8.8 magnitude earthquake. Officials said a wave as high as 6m (20ft) could strike the coast. The quake struck about 250 miles (400km) from Tokyo at a depth of 20 miles, shaking building in the capital for several minutes. The tremor at 1446 local time (0546 GMT) was followed by a series of powerful aftershocks. MORE HERE |

Copied- I see the Japanese have "upgraded" the Earthquake to a 9 Mag on the Richter Scale From what I know a 10 has never been recorded. So 9 is up there. Boy, Japan is in some mess. |

The Japanese city of Ishinomaki was one of the hardest hit when a powerful tsunami swept ashore on March 11, 2011. When the Advanced Spaceborne Thermal Emission and Reflection Radiometer (ASTER) on NASA’s Terra satellite acquired the top image three days later, on March 14, water still inundated the city. The lower image, from August 8, 2008, shows water levels under normal circumstances. Water is dark blue in this false-color image. Plant-covered land is red, exposed earth is tan, and the city is silver. Standing water is most evident in the flat, open places that were once fields. The most extensive flooding is around the Matsushima Air Base in the lower left corner of the image. According to news reports, several airplanes were damaged in the tsunami. The neighborhoods immediately around the airstrip are also flooded. Dark blue fills in the spaces between buildings in sections of Ishinomaki near the harbor in the center of the image and by the river in the upper right. These areas are probably flooded. Survivors in parts of Ishinomaki were being rescued in boats, reported CNN. The large image shows additional flooding near Ishinomaki and farther south in Sendai. ![]() ![]() ![]() Northeastern Japan. 14 March 2011. Image NASA |

![]() On March 11, 2011, a magnitude 9.0 earthquake occurred off the northeast coast of Japan and triggered a tsunami that devastated coastal communities. One of the hardest hit was the city of Rikuzentakata. At the end of a narrow inlet, the city of roughly 8,000 households lost 75 percent of its homes. On March 14, 2011, The Mainichi Daily News declared: “Rikuzentakata has been erased.” The Advanced Spaceborne Thermal Emission and Reflection Radiometer (ASTER) on NASA’s Terra satellite observed dramatic changes at Rikuzentakata from March 1, 2007 (lower image) to March 14, 2011 (upper image). ASTER combines infrared, red, and green wavelengths of light to make false-color images that distinguish between water and land. Water is blue; buildings and paved surfaces appear blue-gray. Agricultural fields range in color from brown to beige to pink. Vegetation is red, and brighter shades indicate more robust vegetation. In the wake of the tsunami, the coastline of Rikuzentakata has been totally reshaped. A long barrier beach with well-vegetated land, visible in 2007, is almost completely gone from the waterfront in 2011. North of that, flood water sits on agricultural fields. East of Rikuzentakata, a large mass of peach-colored floating debris appears in 2011. Debris, both floating and resting on land, extends eastward to Otomo, much of it lying over what had been farms. The debris mass very likely contains material swept out of Rikuzentakata. If you open the larger image (6MB download) from 2011, you also see what are likely beige debris streams well off the Japanese coast. On March 17, 2011, Kyodo News reported 4,255 deaths, while 8,194 people remained missing. The death toll was expected to climb after water levels receded and people could access the devastated areas. On March 11, 2011, however, The New York Times reported that strict building codes and routine earthquake and tsunami drills throughout Japan had likely prevented the death toll from being higher. A plea for a return to science on the nuclear power issue Posted on March 20, 2011 by Anthony Watts http://wattsupwiththat.com/2011/03/20/a-plea-for-a-return-to-science-on-the-nuclear-power-issue/ German physicist Peter Heller makes a passionate plea for a return to science on the nuclear energy issue. He wonders if ignorance and fear will cause us to abandon the legacies of Einstein, Heisenberg and others. |

The Japanese government today estimated the direct damage from the 8.9 magnitude earthquake and tsunami that struck the northeast of the country on March 11 as much as 220 billion euro, making it the world’s costliest natural disaster. If the government’s projection proves correct, it would top the overall losses from Hurricane Katrina. The 2005 hurricane that hit New Orleans and the surrounding region cost 88 billion euro, according to the Insurance Information Institute. The estimate covered damage to roads, homes, factories and other infrastructure, and eclipses the losses incurred by other natural disasters such as the 1995 Kobe quake and Hurricane Katrina in 2005. |

The negligent promotion of nuclear panic If you're worried about the nuclear threat - don't be! http://wattsupwiththat.com/2011/03/26/the-negligent-promotion-of-nuclear-panic/ Abstract: "It pains me to see large parts of the media still hyperventilating over the very modest amounts of radioactive material coming from the Fukushima Daiichi plant on the east coast of Japan. Nothing has been made more plain that most journalists and editors have no ability to evaluate risk, especially when it comes to radioactive measurements in very unfamiliar units (millisieverts anyone?). Everything they appear to know about radioactivity appears to come from poorly understood science reports and 1950s era B-movies. You wouldn’t know from the coverage that that very same reactor survived a truly massive earthquake and a towering tsunami with barely a scratch even though it was built around 40 years ago in the expectation of surviving much lesser events. You wouldn’t know that Japanese people are struggling to survive in the bitter cold, while coming to terms with the loss of family members, friends and entire neighbourhoods. You won’t hear that some survivors are being housed in other nuclear plants, everything else having been washed away." more... "The situation at the quake- and tsunami-stricken Fukushima Daiichi nuclear powerplant in Japan was brought under control days ago. It remains the case as this is written that there have been no measurable radiological health consequences among workers at the plant or anybody else, and all indications are that this will remain the case. And yet media outlets around the world continue with desperate, increasingly hysterical and unscrupulous attempts to frame the situation as a crisis. Here’s a roundup of the latest facts, accompanied by highlights of the most egregious misreporting. First up, three technicians working to restore electrical power in the plant’s No 3 reactor building stood in some water while doing so. Their personal dosimetry equipment later showed that they had sustained radiation doses up to 170 millisievert. Under normal rules when dealing with nuclear powerplant incidents, workers at the site are permitted to sustain up to 250 millisievert before being withdrawn. If necessary, this can be extended to 500 millisievert according to World Health Organisation guidance. None of this involves significant health hazards: actual radiation sickness is not normally seen until a dose of 1,000 millisievert and is not common until 2,000. Additional cancer risk is tiny: huge numbers of people must be subjected to such doses in order to see any measurable health consequences. In decades to come, future investigators will almost certainly be unable to attribute any cases of cancer to service at Fukushima. Nonetheless, in the hyper-cautious nuclear industry, any dose over 100 millisievert is likely to cause bosses to pull people out at least temporarily. Furthermore, the three workers had sustained slight burns to their legs as a result of standing in the radioactive water – much as one will burn one’s skin by exposing it to the rays of the sun (a tremendously powerful nuclear furnace). They didn’t even notice these burns until after completing their work. Just to be sure, however, the three were sent for medical checks. So – basically nothing happened. Three people sustained injuries equivalent to a mild case of sunburn. But this was reported around the globe as front-page news under headlines such as “Japanese Workers Hospitalized for Excessive Radiation Exposure”. Just to reiterate: it was not excessive." Eastcorkram its very hard to know, what the story is,as only TEPCO can say for certain.Having said that, TEPCO are well know for not telling the truth and for covering things up over the years. Now it seems, they made "mistake" in reporting a radiation spike 10 million times above normal. http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-asia-pacific-12875327?utm_source=twitterfeed&utm_medium=twitter. |
