![]() A day in the life of a UK Met Office forecaster, the challenges posed by climate change to Ireland and the earthquakes are among the topics to be discussed at the Irish Met Society Conference 2011 which will be held on Saturday 26 March in Nui Maynooth, Co Kildare. The conference, “Ireland’s Weather Past, Present and Future”, will feature lectures by Professor Chris Bean of UCD, Professor Peter Lynch of UCD, TV presenter and architect Duncan Stewart, Katie Howard of the UK Met Office, and Professor John Sweeney, Department of Geography, NUI Maynooth. Lectures - Earth Vibrations: Earthquakes, Weather and the Earth’s ‘Hum’ by Professor Chris Bean, UCD. - Balance in the Atmosphere by Professor Peter Lynch, UCD. - Climate Change Adaptation – the Challenges for Ireland by Professor John Sweeney, Department of Geography, NUI Maynooth. - A Day in the Life of a Weather Forecaster by Katie Howard, Met Office, Exeter. - Climate Change by Duncan Stewart, TV presenter and architect. Poster Presentations (1) – “the GAP Weather Station” by Conor Graham, School of Geography, Archaeology and Palaeoecology, Queen’s University Belfast. (2) – “Dynamical and statistical downscaling of ensemble forecasts for wind energy applications in Ireland” by Jennifer Courtney, UCD Meteorology and Climate Centre. (3) -”Investigating the use of winter cover crops in Irish arable systems for nitrogen management and carbon sequestration” by Dru Marsh, School of Biology and Environmental Science, UCD. (4) – “Potential Economic Impacts of Sea Level Rise on the Irish Coast” by Stephen Flood, ICARUS, Department of Geography, NUI Maynooth (5) – “Tourism and Climate Change in Ireland” by Nichola Salmon, ICARUS, NUI Maynooth. (6) -”A farm scale sustainable nutrient management decision support system for farmers in Ireland” by Marian Hennessy, Agricultural Science and Veterinary Medicine Programme. (7) – “The Impact of Climate Change on the Construction Industry” by David Smyth, ICARUS, NUI Maynooth. (8) – “Identification of physical indicators of coastal vulnerability to impacts of climate change and sea level rise in the Dublin area” by Silvia Caloca Casado, ICARUS, NUI Maynooth. (9) – “Observations of vegetation seasonality in Ireland from Envisat MERIS” by Brian O’Connor, Dept. of Geography, UCC. (10) – “Peat, pollen and climate: a look into Ireland’s hidden archives” by Peter Majkut, NUIG (11) – “Water Resources and Climate Change in Ireland” by Julia Hall, ICARUS, NUI Maynooth (12) – “Potential impacts of climate variables on the pollen season of birch (Betula spp.) in Ireland” by Hazel Proctor, Centre for the Environment, TCD. (13) – “Modelling the impacts of future climate change on Irish farming” by Dr Mohamed Abdalla, TCD (14) -”The effect of climate change on agricultural ecosystems” by Dr. Saul Otero, School of Biology and Environmental Science, UCD (15) – “Does weather drive climate adaptation?” by Jackie S.
