A large earthquake has been recorded in north-eastern Burma, also known as Myanmar.

The earthquake, which has been confirmed as a magnitude 7 quake by the US Geological Survey, was also felt in China, Thailand, Vietnam and Laos.

The depth of the quake, whichwas centered 111 kilometers north of Chiang Rai in Thailand, is estimated to be 229.4 km.

A magnitude 5.8 earthquake struck China's extreme southwest near the border with Burma on 10 March 2011, killing at least 13 people and injuring more than 125.

The earthquake, which has been confirmed as a magnitude 6.7 quake by the US Geological Survey, was also felt in China, Thailand, Vietnam and Laos.

The depth of the quake, which was centred 111 kilometres north of Chiang Rai in Thailand, is estimated to be 10 kilometres.

Distances to cities: 230 km NE Chiang mai (pop 200,952 ; local time 20:55:12.8 2011-03-24); 30 km NW Mae sai (pop 27,520 ; local time 20:25:12.8 2011-03-24).
