M5.0 quake jolts northeastern Japan, no tsunami warning issued TOKYO, April 1, Kyodo A strong earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 5.0 struck the northeastern part of Japan on Friday, the Japan Meteorological Agency said. No tsunami warning was issued after the 7:49 p.m. quake, which registered upper 5 on the Japanese seismic intensity scale of 7 in Odate, Akita Prefecture, on the Sea of Japan coast. The agency said earlier the quake recorded a magnitude 5.1 but revised down to 5.0. The focus of the inland quake was in the northern part of the prefecture at a depth of 12 kilometers, authorities said, adding a woman in her 70s sustained injuries after a television hit her head at home in Kitaakita. |
