April 1986 remains one the coldest Aprils on record in Ireland. Frost occurred frequently during the month with hail, sleet and even snow falling at times also. Along the west coast, temperatures rarely surpassed 10.0c. Indeed, the highest temperature at Belmullet in Co. Mayo was just 11.7c for the month as a whole. Mean temperatures finish below 2.0c below normal over many parts of the country. It was also a very wet month, especially in Ulster and north Connacht.

A day by day account of this extraordinary month can be read on the main Irish Weather Online site.
