Type: Earthquake 3 hours ago Magnitude: 5.2 DateTime: Friday May 6 2011, 16:20:39 UTC Region: northern Mid-Atlantic Ridge Depth: 9.9 km. http://quakes.globalincidentmap.com/. That 5.2 in mid atlantic, interesting.I wonder if it was stronger, and and caused a tsunami, would it have reached us here in Ireland. -c-h-i-n -c-h-i-n |

A glossary of earthquake-related terms. * Active fault: A fault that is likely to have another earthquake sometime in the future. Faults are commonly considered to be active if they have moved in the last 10,000 years. * Crust: The outermost layer of the earth, ranging from 10 to 65 km in thickness worldwide. The uppermost 15-35 km of crust is brittle enough to produce earthquakes. * Epicentre: The point on the earth's surface vertically above the hypocentre. * Fault: A fracture, along which the blocks of crust on either side have moved relative to one another in a direction parallel to the fracture. * Fissure: A long narrow crack in the ground caused by earthquakes. * Focal depth: The depth of an earthquake's hypocentre. * Focus: See hypocentre. * Hypocentre: The point on the fault plane where the rupture starts. * Intensity: A measure of how strongly an earthquake manifests at the surface, based on its observable effects on people, buildings and the environment. Intensity is usually ranked using the 12 point Modified Mercalli Intensity (MMI) scale. * Liquefaction: A process in which water-saturated sediment temporarily loses its strength and acts as a fluid. * Magnitude: A measure of the energy released by an earthquake at its source. Magnitude is commonly determined from the shaking recorded on a seismograph. Each unit of magnitude on the scale represents a substantial increase in energy, for example a magnitude 5 releases 30 times more energy than a magnitude 4. * MMI: An abbreviation for Modified Mercalli Intensity (see Intensity above). * Sandblows: When waves from a large earthquake pass though wet, loose sand, patches of sand erupt from below the surface onto the ground and form sandblow deposits. * Slumping: When loosely consolidated materials or rock layers move a short distance down a slope. * Subduction zone: The area or zone where two tectonic plates come together, one riding over the other. * Swarm: An earthquake swarm is a sequence of nearby earthquakes striking in a short period of time. * Tectonic uplift: Elevation of the ground caused by plate movement. |

Very strong (dangerous) earthquake at an intermediate depth near San Jose, Costa Rica UPDATE 23:59 UTC : The locations closest to the epicenter with a theoretical V MMI are : Alajuela, San Ramon and San Rafael UPDATE 23:58 UTC : Due to the fact that everybody in Costa Rica starts telling about their experience in online social media, it is very hard to get a clear picture of the situation. UPDATE 23:55 UTC : We have seen NO reports so far from any damage. We do not expect (mainly due to the received felt reports) that this earthquake will be damaging. UPDATE 23:52 UTC : The Costa Rican Red Cross had to intervene in a number of locations because many people had nervous breakdowns. UPDATE 23:49 UTC : Mobile phone networks have been shut down for a while after the quake struck. Probably because it was well felt all over the country and people start calling like crazy to each other. This kind of behavior is VERY DANGEROUS if a really damaging earthquake would strike. UPDATE 23:47 UTC : The epicenter of this earthquake (which is not that important because of the depth of the hypocenter) is located at 6 km from Santiago de Puriscal UPDATE 23:44 UTC : This earthquake is a typical subduction earthquake (2 tectonic plates diving under each other). UPDATE 23:37 UTC : Felt reports are mentioning values up to V MMI. V MMI will normally not be damaging. If these values are confirmed we expect max. cracks in walls and isolated slight damage. UPDATE 23:33 UTC : The earthquake has been felt all over Costa Rica as well as in neighboring Panama and Nicaragua. UPDATE 23:30 UTC : Due to the depth of the hypocenter the potential for a damaging earthquake will be very limited. The landscape however is very hilly and can always trigger landslides. UPDATE 23:26 UTC : USGS theoretical calculations predict a V MMI (moderate) shaking for more than 3 million people. UPDATE 23:25 UTC : GDACS published a GREEN earthquake alert for this earthquake = very limited chance on damage and/or injuries. Earthquake-report calls this earthquake moderately dangerous. At 4:47 PM a very strong earthquake at a luckily intermediate depth struck the greater San Jose area in Costa Rica. Due to the close distance to the capital, San Jose earthquake-report.com calls this earthquake moderately dangerous. Most important Earthquake Data: Magnitude : 6.0 UTC Time : Friday, May 13, 2011 at 22:47:55 UTC Local time at epicenter : Friday, May 13, 2011 at 04:47:55 PM at epicenter Depth (Hypocenter) : 70 km Geo-location(s) : 25 km (16 miles) WNW (303°) from SAN JOSE, Costa Rica 6 km from Santiago de Puriscal |
