Beijing - Twenty-two quarry workers were feared dead after a landslide buried them under rubble in south-western China's mountainous Guangxi region, state media reported Tuesday.

Rescuers in Guangxi's Luojiang village told the official Xinhua news agency that 12 workers had died and that they had found 'no sign of life' from 10 others who were still missing after the landslide early Monday afternoon.

The rescuers recovered 11 bodies from the rubble that engulfed the workers' huts, and one survivor died en route to hospital.

The landslide was caused by heavy rainstorms that swept across southern China since Saturday.

In neighbouring Guangdong province, weekend storms destroyed 379 homes and left at least two people missing.

At least four more people died and 17 were injured after a tornado hit Guangdong's Foshan city during the storms on Saturday, the China Daily newspaper said.

Another tornado left at least 20 people injured in the nearby Meishan area of Sichuan province on Monday, reports said.
