The day Rome didn’t disappear

n aerial view of the Collisseum in Rome, Italy.

Romans let out a sigh of relief Wednesday morning.

Everything was still in place: buildings, famous ancient ruins, schools and homes.

In recent months, concerns of a possible earthquake that was going to destroy the "Eternal City" spread on the Web. It all started with the misinterpretation of the theory of Raffaele Bendandi, a seismologist who died in 1979 who claimed a major quake would take place on May 11, 2011. After the Japanese earthquake, concern turned to anxiety.

And with the best view of the planets clustering before sunrise Wednesday, it caused further panic.

In some areas of the city, nearly 50% of the shops where closed. On doors are quick handwritten notes: ‘Closed for inventory."

While several minor quakes rattled the country prone to temblors, none came like the one in the purported claim. Still, some residents fled, just in case.

Daniela D’Amely, a graphic designer mother of a 12-year-old, told CNN her daughter "begged" her to escape from Rome today. Eventually, her daughter did go to school, but many other kids were absent.

According to the police, traffic was more intense than usual on roads leading out of Rome.

Bendandi, a self-made scientist from a village in central Italy, with some official recognition during his life, believed that the alignment of the planets could change the gravitational force of the Earth, causing earthquakes.

But experts at the National Geophysical and Volcanology Institute stressed there was nothing to be worried about.

‘The force from aligned planets is irrelevant compared to the tectonic forces of the Earth's plates whose movements create real earthquakes," said seismologist Lucia Margheriti. "None of the big earthquakes of the last century happened with particular planets' alignment."

The Institute is even holding an event to explain and address the worries - and over 1,000 visitors where registered since the early hours of the morning.

"When we have conferences to inform people on earthquakes prevention measures, nobody comes," Margheriti said. "Public reacts to strong emotions like fear, and for us today is a good occasion to reach people that are not usually interested in geology."

A woman asked them if today she could have a ultrasound medical test or if it was better to move the appointment. Of course the answer was to do the ultrasound today.

Gianni Alemanno, the mayor of Rome, also assured Romans that nothing as a devastating earthquake would happen today.

"It’s not a scientific forecast," ANSA news agency reported him saying this morning. ‘We have to remain calm."

"Bendandi’s theory have no scientific evidence," said Marco Loppi, a geophysicist who now earns his living selling mobile phones.

"In Italy we register dozens of minor earthquakes every day. The real problem is that there is very little scientific information and people that search the net fall easily in this kind of stupid predictions."

The hospital Rafael Méndez has been evacuated as a result of this earthquake. This is not good with a number expected to be injured. Serviceability is an important measure for hospitals in earthquakes.
: Given the relative abnormality of such large earthquakes in this area and the fact that 2 descended upon Lorca in short time, there is a feeling of chaos in Lorca, with much damage reported. 7 continues to be the total killed. These deaths all occurred from the 2nd earthquake (the larger of the two, at M5.2).

Up date.

"At least eight people have died this afternoon in Loca, Murcia, Southeast of Spain, after a 5.1 magnitude earthquake, according to the local government."

"Fracisco Jódar, major of Lorca, where the quake was felt with most intensity, said to the Spanish press that at least one building has collapsed. Rafael Méndez Hospital in Lorca was evacuated, several people were hurt and transfered to hospitals in Murcia, Cartagena and Cieza.

The Spanish authorities had inicially reported five deaths. The quake shook several buildings. The quake's epicenter is located in Sierra de Tercia, Lorca, near Murcia. Several roads and railways have been cut.

Two earthquakes were detected in the area, the first with a 4.4 magnitude in the Richter scale and the second with 5.2 intensity. The quakes were detected at 18h50 GMT+1 (17h50 in Lisboa).

One of the victims was underage. The quake was detected mostly in Mazarrón, Cartagena and Águillas, and also in Almería, Albacete and Madrid, as reported by El País.

The quake caused breaches and cracks in roads and accesses and the authorities asked drivers to avoid the area. The A7 highway to Andalucia was blocked.

A lot of people rushed outdoors after the quake. "I felt a very strong quake, with big rumble, I was very scared", Juani Avellaneda told El País. Joana Ruiz told the journalists how her home was destroyed, "it totally cracked, the furniture collapsed".

The Townhall has activated an emergency plan and the local government enforced a level 2 seismic emergency plan. Múrcia sits on the most seismically active region of Spain."

Spain is a seismically active zone. Much of the southern Iberian Peninsula — in particular the Murcia Region — is located on a tectonic zone of common seismic activity, where a plate boundary separating the Eurasia and African Plates is formed. The earthquake was estimated to be a direct result of strike-slip faulting near the major Alhama de Murcia fault. Local specialists also reported the presence of surface rupturing in the vicinity of the fault.

Situation UPDATE : 8 9 fatalities (including 2 pregnant woman and 1 14 year old child); 3 2 seriously injured, 360 treated for minor injuries. Several buildings fully or partially collapsed, lots of damage in the city, especially historic buildings.

: Almost 20,000 houses, mostly within the city limits, have suffered some kind of damage from yesterdays earthquake.

The mayor of Lorca, Mr. Jodar, does not want to see people sleeping in the streets again like it was the case last night. He is offering a stay in hotels, lodges and in tents. The message goes mainly for more than 12,000 people (children and adults), almost all immigrants, who slept last night on the asphalt in the streets and in open air.

The following video link gives an idea of a lucky escape in Lorca. Somebody has been found in the rubble and is being rescued. Only for people with a strong heart !

Understanding the Lorca, Spain May 11 2011 earthquake.
The southeastern Spain earthquake of 11 May, 2011, occurred within the plate boundary region that separates the Eurasia and Africa (Nubia) plates. At the longitude of the earthquake, the Africa plate moves NW with respect to the Eurasia plate with a velocity of 6 mm/yr.
Posted Image

Earthquakes in different parts of the plate-boundary region separating Africa and Eurasia may occur as the result of strike-slip or normal faulting, in addition to the reverse/thrust faulting that is expected as the most direct consequence of the convergence of two major plates. The diversity of faulting styles over the plate-boundary region may reflect the motions of crustal blocks that are situated within the broader plate-boundary zone and that move slowly relative to one another to accommodate the NW/SE convergence of the major plates.

The epicenter of the 11 May earthquake is situated near a major fault, the Alhama de Murcia fault. However, significant field work in the epicentral region of the earthquake will be necessary to confidently determine if the earthquake occurred on a segment of the Alhama de Murcia fault or on a nearby fault.

In recent decades, the larger shallow-focus shocks of southeastern Spain have had magnitudes of about 5.
Shocks of this size occurred near the epicenter of the 11 May earthquake in February 1999 and August 2002. The distributions of damage associated with several shocks that occurred before the twentieth century imply that these shocks had magnitudes in the 6.5-7 range.

Iberia and the Mahgreb also experience occasional deep-focus earthquakes of magnitude greater than 6 that occur at depths of over 600 km in lithosphere that was subducted along the plate boundary millions of years ago.
