Hi all, Have been looking into earthquake reports for 2011 to date, 19 June. It looks like 2011 will be a record breaking year, especially for moderate earthquakes. A lot of people have been talking about whether we are experiencing more earthquakes than usual this year. The answer is yes for earthquakes in the range 5-7. Here is an article on IWO main site http://www.irishweatheronline.com/news/earthquakesvolcanos/2011-on-target-for-highest-number-of-recorded-earthquakes/20688.html |

Massive (scary) Alaskan earthquake in an unpopulated area...June 24, 2011 A terrifying strong earthquake occurred at 6:09 PM near the remote Alaskan Aleutian Islands. The epicenter of the earthquake was on top of the subduction slopes. The energy of this massive earthquake was weakened due to the depth of the epicenter. Most important Earthquake Data: Magnitude : 7.2 UTC Time : Friday, June 24, 2011 at 03:09:40 UTC Local time at epicenter : Thursday, June 23, 2011 at 06:09:40 PM at epicenter Depth (Hypocenter) : 62.6 km Geo-location(s) : 64 km (39 miles) SW of Amukta Island, Alaska 103 km (64 miles) SW of Yunaska Island, Alaska 1677 km (1042 miles) WSW of Anchorage, Alaska ![]() USGS Population exposure map (no people are living within the VI radius circle) DATE : Most of the surrounding islands are unpopulated volcano islands (active, dormant and inactive) UPDATE : There were no cities available in the database within the exposure map boundary. UPDATE : Due to the intermediate depth of the hypocenter (62.6 km), the max. MMI (intensity) near the epicenter was only VII(uninhabited). 168 people experienced a moderate shaking (far away) and 4,000 people a light shaking. UPDATE : GDACS, immediately published a statement that the greater earthquake epicenter was unpopulated within 200 km, thus minimizing the destructive capacity of the earthquake UPDATE : The NOAA message below means in fact that steep hilled subduction zones can always trigger an undersea landslide that can create massive waves on the local beaches or that the local valleys may have the capacity to generate tsunami waves UPDATE : NOAA West Coast and Alaska tsunami warning center. The earlier Tsunami Warning has been canceled. Edited by Audi-Tek, June 24 2011, 05:54 PM.

Nagano quake damages cultural assets A strong earthquake hit a part of Nagano Prefecture, central Japan, on Thursday, injuring 13, 5 of them seriously. The quake struck at around 8:16 AM. It registered 5-plus on the Japanese seismic scale of zero to 7 in Matsumoto City. Japan's Meteorological Agency says the quake had a magnitude of 5.4, and that the epicenter was 4 kilometers below ground. Aftershocks have been recorded in the region and the Meteorological Agency is calling for caution. The temblor caused cracks to the walls of a small castle tower near the main tower of centuries-old Matsumoto Castle. Both structures are designated national treasures. The former Kaichi School, which is one of Japan's oldest elementary school buildings and a nationally-designated important property, also sustained cracks to its walls. Melbourne rocked by earthquake in eastern Victoria UPDATED From: AAP July 05, 2011 2:38PM MORE aftershocks are expected after Victoria's south was rocked by two earthquakes, including a magnitude 4.4 tremor felt in Melbourne, more than 100km from its epicentre. The shallow magnitude 4.4 earthquake, which hit at 11.32am (AEST), was felt in Melbourne's CBD and the city's southeastern suburbs. A second, smaller quake shook Korumburra, in Victoria's east, with reports it was again felt in Melbourne, at 12.37pm, a spokesman from Geosciences Australia said. The epicentre of the original quake was about 7km west of Korumburra. Korumburra Hotel publican Troy Patterson said when the earthquake hit, the pub shook for about eight seconds, accompanied by a loud rumbling. “The whole place literally shook,” he said. “You would think a truck had driven through the pub.” Kara from Rowville, in Melbourne's southeast, said she initially thought it was the wind rattling the windows. “The windows rattled really loudly at first. I just thought it was the wind as it's really windy here,” she told Fairfax Radio Network. “Then the couch I was sitting on started shaking. It felt like I was sitting on wobbly jelly or on the sea,” she said. Liz, from Monbulk, said it was the strongest earthquake she had felt. “The house really rattled for about 12 to 15 seconds,” she said. State Emergency Service spokesman Lachlan Quick said no reports of damage had been received so far. The Geosciences Australia spokesman said the centre had received more than 300 reports from people who felt the quake. Most reports were of windows and crockery rattling, he said. More aftershocks were expected, he said. Hundreds of small aftershocks followed a similar earthquake in 2009. A number of tremors measuring between 1.8 and 4.6 originated near Korumburra in March and May 2009, with the largest on March 18 felt as far away as Bacchus Marsh, 50km west of Melbourne. ![]() EARTH TREMOR: The epicentre of the original quake was about 7km west of Korumburra. Source: Herald Sun NEW Zealand's North Island was hit by a powerful quake yesterday, just hours after Melbourne was rattled by earth tremors. A shallow magnitude 4.4 earthquake hit Victoria at 11.32am, and was felt in Melbourne's CBD and the southeastern suburbs. A second, smaller quake - measuring 3.3 - shook Korumburra, with reports it was again felt in Melbourne, at 12.37pm, a spokesman from Geosciences Australia said. The epicentre of the original quake was about 7km west of Korumburra. Later, a powerful earthquake struck New Zealand's North Island and was felt as far south as Christchurch, but there are no reports of injuries or damage. GNS Science in New Zealand said the earthquake - which struck at 1.36pm AEST - had a magnitude of 6.5, but the US Geological Survey measured the quake at 5.3. Start of sidebar. Skip to end of sidebar. End of sidebar. Return to start of sidebar. Senior seismologist Clive Collins told Victorians they may feel further aftershocks yesterday, and while it was unlikely the state would ever cop anything stronger, it should never be ruled out. "If you look at the history of recorded earthquakes in Australia, they are not increasing or decreasing necessarily, it's just the luck of the draw," he said. "But you can have clusters of activity within the space of a year and then nothing for five years. "People are also hearing about it a lot more because they can just jump onto the internet.'' A number of tremors measuring between 1.8 and 4.6 originated near Korumburra in March and May 2009, with the largest on March 18 felt as far away as Bacchus Marsh, 50km west of Melbourne. Mr Collins said the latest quake was probably part of the same fault line. "Australia sits on the tectonic plate that runs from New Zealand to the Himalayas and we are not near any big boundaries but because the plates are moving all the time stresses can build up in local fault lines or cracks. That's what we've felt today.'' Korumburra Hotel publican Troy Patterson said when the earthquake hit, the pub shook for about eight seconds, accompanied by a loud rumbling. "The whole place literally shook,'' he told AAP. "You would think a truck had driven through the pub.'' Kara from Rowville, in Melbourne's southeast, said she initially thought it was the wind rattling the windows. "The windows rattled really loudly at first. I just thought it was the wind as it's really windy here,'' she told Fairfax Radio Network. "Then the couch I was sitting on started shaking. It felt like I was sitting on wobbly jelly or on the sea,'' she said. Liz, from Monbulk, said it was the strongest earthquake she had felt. "The house really rattled for about 12 to 15 seconds,'' she said. State Emergency Service spokesman Lachlan Quick said no reports of damage had been received so far. The Geosciences Australia spokesman said the centre had received more than 300 reports from people who felt the quake. Most reports were of windows and crockery rattling, he said. Michael O'Keefe was in Warragul and said it was the strongest quake he's ever felt. "It sounded like a truck was approaching up the street and then it was as if the truck had run into the building. Everything was rattling. It feels a bit like it's not complete, like there is another one to come.'' Glenn Robins in Mt Waverly said he was sitting in his armchair when the tremor struck. "I felt it through the chair and then saw all the photos on the TV unit rattling.'' No major damage has been reported at this stage but reports of the quake have been received from the CBD as far north as Melbourne airport and east to Kilsyth and Lilydale. Residents in Tullamarine, Baccus Marsh, the CBD, Croydon, Berwick, Ferntree Gully and Blackburn reported tremors. Steve at Lynbrook told his local Leader newspaper he thought the noise was coming from a nearby railway station. “Not sure if a truck just dropped a load at the nearby Lynbrook rail station construction site or we just has an earth tremor… the ground shook for about 30 seconds,’’ he said. Andrea in Gembrook said the quake wasn’t as bad as the last tremor to shake her house. “I am in Gembrook and the house shook, bottles rattled and the animals were worried. not as big as the last one that cracked our wall,” she said. THE biggest aftershock from yesterday's 4.6 magnitude earth tremor was a forecast that Victoria's dormant volcanoes are overdue to erupt. Yesterday's Korumburra tremor, felt in inner Melbourne, hit at 11.32am. A 3.3 magnitude aftershock was felt two hours later, and a second 3.7 aftershock was recorded at about 7.15pm last night. Both aftershocks occurred in almost the exact same spot about 7km from Korumburra. Seismologists said aftershocks would be felt for days. But the future painted by scientists in Melbourne for today's Congress of Geodesy and Geophysics was more apocalyptic. Scientists said volcanoes in the Western District were overdue to blow. Eruptions are expected every 2000 years but there's been nothing since Mt Gambier erupted 5000 years ago. "If rising magma meets groundwater, it could cause steam explosions that would blanket the state in volcanic ash," Prof Bernie Joyce said. An eruption would most likely occur around Colac, Port Fairy, Portland or Mt Gambier, he said. Yesterday's quake resulted in a series of aftershocks, one measuring 3.3 at 12.37pm. Geosciences Australia senior seismologist Clive Collins predicted more. "Australia sits on the tectonic plate that runs from New Zealand to the Himalayas," Dr Collins said. "Because the plates are moving all the time, stresses build up in local fault lines or cracks. That's what we've felt today." Michael O'Keefe, in Warragul, said the quake sounded like a truck crash. "It was as if the truck had run into the building," Mr O'Keefe said. |

Massive earthquake Kermadec Islands : Tsunami warning canceled for Tonga and New Zealand Last update: July 6, 2011 at 9:35 pm Earthquake summary : A massive M 7.6 earthquake struck in the open sea in the Kermadec Island region. The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center did issue a Tsunami alert for Tonga or New Zealand. It was later canceled without any real tsunami. To read the full story as it happened, we advise our readers to start at the bottom of the page (earthquake data) and to continue up. It will read as a written movie of the events. UPDATE 21:02 UTC : MORE GOOD NEWS FROM THE PEOPLE LIVING CLOSEST TO THE EPICENTER Eight people on Raoul Island – right next to the epicentre – are safe and unharmed from this morning’s massive earthquake. The Department of Conservation said it had four staff and four volunteers on the island. “They certainly felt the earthquake but they are fine,” a DOC regional spokesman Liz Maire said. There was no obvious sign of damage and the staff had not seen a tsunami which would already have hit the island. Maire said they were now out on the island looking for damage to tracks. She said the staff were cautious of aftershocks and were taking precautions. Meanwhile, a Tonga police official said the quake was not felt on Tongatapu. UPDATE 20:54 UTC : For the seismological explanation of this massive earthquake – see below. The Kermadec trench (epicenter of this earthquake) is approx. 5,500 meter deep. UPDATE 20:32 UTC : USGS has further decreased the magnitude to 7.6 (a big difference with 7.8!). Depth also adapted to 20 km. UPDATE 20:27 UTC : The Kermadec islands has regular strong to very strong earthquakes. Only a handful of scientists are living on the islands and they know perfectly what to do in case of a massive earthquake. Luckily this massive earthquakes will be one for the scientific history books. UPDATE 20:07 UTC : Tsunami warning has been called off by the Tsunami Pacific Warning Center. UPDATE 20:00 UTC : If GDACS issues a tsunami alert for some areas, it always indicates the wave height for many places. In this case no locations have been stipulated as they do not expect waves to reach populated islands . Nevertheless we have still the Pacific Tsunami alert in place at this time. UPDATE 19:50 UTC : earthquake-Report.com advise for people living near beaches in Tonga and New Zealand North Island Safest way for coastal residents in Tonga and New Zealand is to walk for higher grounds until the Tsunami alert is called off. The subduction zone extends north-northeast from the North Island of New Zealand for over 2500 km through Tonga to within 100 km of Western Samoa. At a broad scale, tectonics of the subduction zone reflect the motion of the Pacific plate westward with respect to the interior of the Australia plate at a velocity of about 60 mm/y in the epicentral region of the earthquake. The Pacific plate subducts beneath the Australia plate at the Tonga and Kermadec trenches, and dips to the west. In detail, the eastern edge of the broad Australia plate may itself be viewed as a collection of small plates or microplates that move with respect to each other and with respect to the Pacific plate and the Australia plate interior. The location and focal-mechanism of the earthquake are consistent with it occurring as thrust faulting on the interface between the subducting Pacific plate and the overriding Australia plate (in detail, the overriding Kermadec microplate). The interaction between the Pacific and Australia plate creates one of the most active tectonic environments in the world, with a high level of associated earthquake activity. Since 1976, a 200-km long section of the Tonga – Kermadec subduction zone that includes the epicenter of the February 18 earthquake has produced over 50 earthquakes of magnitude 6 or larger, with the largest having magnitude 7.9. Most important Earthquake Data: Magnitude : 7.8 (changed afterwards to 7.6) UTC Time : Wednesday, July 06, 2011 at 19:03:16 UTC Local time at epicenter : Thursday, July 07, 2011 at 07:03:16 AM at epicenter Depth (Hypocenter) : 48 km (changed afterwards to 20 km) Geo-location(s) : 211 km (131 miles) E (95°) from Raoul Island, Kermadec Islands (NO danger) 919 km (571 miles) S (183°) from NUKU’ALOFA, Tonga The above is a report of how it was reported Edited by Audi-Tek, July 7 2011, 01:15 AM.

Costa Rica earthquake : numerous landslides and considerable damage. Last update: July 13, 2011 at 2:58 pm. Most important Earthquake Data: Magnitude : 5.5 Mw (GFZ), 5.6Mw (USGS) UTC Time : 2011-07-12 20:11:06.4 UTC Local time at epicenter : Tuesday, July 12, 2011 at 02:11:08 PM Depth (Hypocenter) : 39 km (84.96°W 10.96°N – epicenter) , 62.4km (USGS) Geo-location(s) : 46 km (28 miles) ENE of Liberia, Costa Rica 46 km (28 miles) SW of San Carlos, Nicaragua 139 km (86 miles) NW of SAN JOSE, Costa Rica 1794 km (1114 miles) ESE of MEXICO CITY, D.F., Mexico F-E Region: Costa Rica Mw 5.5 Time: 2011-07-12 20:11:06.4 UTC Magnitude: 5.5 (Mw) Epicenter: 84.96°W 10.96°N Depth: 39 km OVERVIEW UPDATE : This M5.5 earthquake at 39km depth caused objects to fall in San Juan de Guatuso, Aguas Claras, Las Armenias, San Isidro and Bijagua de Upala. There were two damaged houses in Guacalito de Las Armenias. In Aguas Claras and Puente Río Negro, there was some minor structural damage i.e. cracks to walls etc., but nothing major. Following the local Costa Rican seismological service a local shallow fault was the main reason why the villagers sustained some damage. A M5.1 aftershock followed. A strong earthquake occurred in the early afternoon in the border area of Costa Rica – Nicaragua and close to the Miravalles Volcano. Although the hypocenter was at an intermediate depth, people in the epicenter area have sustained some minor damage. UPDATE 13/07 – 08:59 UTC : The earthquake was felt strongly in the Central Valley. Mobile phones stopped working for minutes after the earthquake (the same happened on May 13 2011 with a deep M 6.0 earthquake near San Jose – Earthquake Report). Electricity was cut for several minutes in the greater epicenter area. Local sources report that 10 people were carried to hospitals with “nervous breakdowns”. UPDATE 13/07 – 09:09 UTC : Due to the torrential rains, authorities are warning drivers to be careful because of an increased landslide risk. Authorities will overfly the epicenter area (weather permitting) in the morning of July 13 to find out whether there are traces of landslides. UPDATE 13/07 – 09:24 UTC : As you can see on the picture at right (screen-shot from a Vivo 7 video) , the earthquake did cause serious shaking. People who live in earthquake rich countries will confirm that the shaking must be serious to sustain this king of damage. ![]() UPDATE 13/07 – 14:31 UTC : Just after the earthquake, villagers living near the Río Guacalito at Armenias de Upala were surprised that the river was suddenly dry! Villagers believe that a dam was created on the slopes of of the Miravalles volcano which dried up the river. UPDATE 13/07 – 14:54 UTC : A number of houses have been labeled inhabitable by the Costa Rican emergency services. ![]() Greenish area has experienced most of the shaking - image courtesy USGS |

Earthquake Causes River to Disappear in Costa Rica. Following a series of moderate earthquakes that struck the northern part of Costa Rica Tuesday and aftershocks on Wednesday, residents near the Guacalito River discovered that the river had disappeared. Earthquake-report.com reported that sometime after the earthquakes, villagers living near the river, which is located near Upala, discovered that the river was dry. It was not immediately known if the waters of the river had disappeared due to sinkhole activity that can occur after earthquakes or if the earth shaking caused damming that dried up the river near the Miravalles volcano. The quakes were centered close to the Nicaragua and Costa Rica border in the same vicinity as the Miravalles volcano. An entire body of water disappears? Strange but true, and this isn't the first time this odd event has happened. In 2010, the Iska River in Slovenia disappeared after local residents heard loud crashing and banging overnight. The next morning, the river was dry and the riverbed was full of fish and other creatures. It was believed that the waters of the river had drained through a large crack into an underground riverbed. This disappearance was not believed to have been related to an earthquake. Most recently - aside from the disappearing river in Costa Rica - an entire reservoir in Huntsbury, New Zealand, that was filled with 36 million liters of water disappeared following a 6.3 magnitude earthquake. The reservoir water disappeared after the earthquake struck Christchurch Feb. 22. A body of water disappearing is not unusual, nor is it unheard of for an earthquake to change the shape and form of bodies of water. There have also been numerous examples of seismic activity creating new bodies of water. In 1959, the largest earthquake to strike Montana -- a 7.3 magnitude temblor -- caused a landslide to dam the Madison River just below Hebgen Dam, thus creating a new body of water that became Hebgen Dam, or "Quake Lake." The historic New Madrid earthquakes in the central United States created a lake in northwestern Tennessee in 1812. Reelfoot Lake was formed during the Feb. 7, 1812, earthquake that was one of several to strike the region during the winter of 1811 and 1812. That earthquake, which is estimated to have been at least 7.0 in magnitude or higher, caused subsidence along the Reelfoot River, dropping a 13,000 acre area of land between 4 and 19 feet. This area filled with water to become Reelfoot Lake. |
