Strong earthquake rocks Indonesia's Papua province JAKARTA, Indonesia -- A strong earthquake rocked parts of Indonesia's Papua province on Sunday, causing panic among residents but no immediate reports of damage or casualties. Indonesia's Meteorology and Geophysics Agency said the magnitude 6.5 earthquake was centered about 53 kilometers (33 miles) northeast of Waren, a town on the northern coast of Papua island. It was followed by two strong aftershocks, the first of magnitude 5.3, the second of magnitude 5.5, the agency said. The initial quake, with a depth of 132 kilometers (82 miles), caused residents in Serui to pour into the streets in panic, said Daud Yusuf of the agency's local office. He said the tremor was also felt in nearby Biak island, and Enarotali town on the main island. The U.S. Geological Survey put the initial quake's magnitude at 6.4 at a depth of 36.1 kilometers (22 miles). ![]() A Panoramio picture from Adrich from the epicenter area UPDATE 15:01 UTC : Another moderate 5.4 aftershock occurred just after midnight at 12:03 AM UPDATE 15:01 UTC : As it is currently night in Papua New Guinea, we do not expect news from the direct epicenter area before 8 AM local time. UPDATE 14:59 UTC : The earthquake will be felt in a wide area, but without any danger for goods and people. Only the coastal settlements are at risk in this earthquake. UPDATE 14:53 UTC : Max. MMI intensity as calculated by Indonesian BMKG = V (moderate shaking). USGS data are predicting that 21 people will experience a very strong shaking and 15,000 people a strong shaking. Earthquake-Report.com tends to go for the USGS numbers, which implicates that this earthquake should be called Very Dangerous instead of Moderately dangerous. UPDATE 14:44 UTC : 2 aftershocks of respectively 5.4 and 5.0, normally not very dangerous but after the first very strong earthquake such moderate aftershocks can create additional damage. UPDATE 14:37 UTC : IV-V Serui, III-IV Nabire, II-III Biak, II-III Wamena, IV-V Waren, II-III Timika (BMKG intensity values) UPDATE 13:02 UTC : As this earthquake happened in the Indonesian part of the island, we expect to get some reports about eventual damage within 12 to 24 hours. We will keep you updated. UPDATE 13:00 UTC : Other agencies data about this earthquake : EMSC : 6.1 @ 10 km depth (dangerous) GFZ : 6.2 @ 7 km depth (dangerous also) BMKG (Indonesia) : 6.3 @ 12 km depth UPDATE 12:53 UTC : There is NO risk for a tsunami as the epicenter of this earthquake is below land. A small riskalways exists if the shaking would create undersea landslides in the subduction zone in front of the coast, but this chance is extremely limited with the present magnitude. UPDATE 12:50 UTC : The orange alert color has been given because of the risk of minor damage if the epicenter would be just below the coastal villages. UPDATE 12:45 UTC : Due to the depth of 36 km and the distance from the epicenter to the coastal villages (if the preliminary location is confirmed), Earthquake-Report.com expects no casualties from this earthquake. Very strong earthquake approx. 15 km inland in the wilderness of Irian Jaya, Papua New Guinea Closest settlements are Wainoeo, Wonti, Kampung Sanggei and Waren. The houses in these coastal settlements are mostly made of wood and bamboo which are less vulnerable to earthquakes. 9 on 10 earthquakes from this strength are not leading to damage reports, even when there is some damage. People in Papua are used to these kind of very strong earthquakes. Most important Earthquake Data: Magnitude : 6.4 UTC Time : Sunday, June 26, 2011 at 12:16:41 UTC Local time at epicenter : Sunday, June 26, 2011 at 09:16:41 PM at epicenter Depth (Hypocenter) : 20.6 km Geo-location(s) : Closest settlements are Wainoeo, Wonti, Kampung Sanggei and Waren. 161 km (100 miles) NNE (13°) from Enarotali, Irian Jaya, Indonesia |
