Canary Islands government raises alert level on El Hierro volcano to yellow

Posted Image

September 23, 2011 – CANARY ISLANDS – Considering the volcanic hazards involves a series of actions to be undertaken sequentially has established a worldwide warning system for the population based on the selection of three colors (green, yellow and red). In this way the population may adopt certain behaviors based on a symbol that are easy to understand color. We must continue in the case of each of them, the recommendations for the same. The Canary Islands government brings to light yellow-volcanic earthquake situation in El Hierro. –Gobierno translated

Volcanic eruption alert on Spanish Canary Island
(AP) – 26 minutes ago
MADRID (AP) — The regional government of the Spanish Canary Island of El Hierro has issued a volcanic eruption alert following almost 10,000 small tremors recorded in the past three months.
The government posted a yellow alert — second level in a scale of four — Sunday and closed some hillside roads and a tunnel to avoid possible injury by falling rocks.
The island’s 11,000 residents have been told to monitor communications by the civil protection authority. The island was shaken late Saturday by a 4.3-magnitude quake. Seismic activity began in the area on July 17.
Like all the Canary Islands, El Hierro was formed by volcanic activity. It has some 500 volcanic cones.
A rose must remain with the sun and the rain or its lovely promise won't come true.

El Hierro villagers afraid to go home
Authorities give all clear despite sulfurous magma trail

Residents of the village of La Restinga, in the Canary Island of El Hierro, which has suffered disturbing volcanic activity this month, are afraid to return home despite plans for the authorities to allow them to.
The villagers were told on Sunday that they would be able to return to their homes within 24 hours if there was no new volcanic activity.

That announcement came after reports on Saturday that magma was flowing at a depth of 150 meters, leaving a sulfurous trail on the sea surface.

"When nothing was happening they evacuated us; and now there is that stain they want us to go back. I won't," bar owner José Redi Morales said Monday.

Geological Time Bomb: Red Alert Issued for El Hierro Volcanic Region in Canary Islands; Possible Tsunami Threat to U.S. East Coast

Posted Image

The IGN, Spain's USGS equivalent, has issued a Red Alert warning for the El Hierro volcanic region in the Canary Islands amid thousands of earthquake swarms and volcanic activity which started in early August:

SPAIN’S Instituto Geográfico Nacional (IGN) confirmed on Tuesday that an underwater eruption has occurred five kilometres off the southern coastline of El Hierro, the smallest of the Canary Islands.

A Red Alert has since been issued by local authorities for the town.

A notice posted on the Emergencia El Hierro website on Tuesday evening stated: “Phase pre-eruptive. It involves the initiation of a preventive evacuation. Make yourself available to the authorities.”

Source: The Olive Press (Spain)

For those not familiar with the volcano, it is situated off the northwest coast of Africa in the Canary Islands, an autonomous Spanish archipelago. While there is no danger to the United States from volcanic eruptions, it has been long theorized by researchers that a large enough eruption and earthquake may be capable of splitting a neighboring volcano, La Palma, in two, which would subsequently cause a land slide on a scale unprecedented in recorded human history. The result would be a massive Mega-Tsunami that would cross the Atlantic ocean, slamming into the Eastern cost of the United States, the Caribbean islands and parts of South America.

While Tsunamis on this scale are incredibly rare according to researchers, a landslide in 1958 in Latuya Bay, Alaska caused a Mega Tsunami (video) whose wave was higher than the Empire State Building and washed over trees and land some 1,700 feet high above sea level.

The theorized landslide in the Canary Islands would involve rock masses that far exceed the Alaskan landslides, estimated to be 10,000 times as much mass, suggesting that the resulting Tsunami would easily exceed three thousand feet (30 times bigger than the the 2004 Indian ocean Tsunami) and travel at roughly 450-500 miles per hour. The wave would slam into the Eastern seaboard with extreme force threatening over 200 million people who live in states from Florida to Maine, the north eastern Canadian coast, the Caribbeans, Brazil and Venezuela.

Simon Day, of the College University of London, says the La Palma volcano, situated in the earthquake zone and less than 100 miles from Hierro, is a geological time bomb:

What we envisage is the whole of this coast line [approximately 1/6 the entire mass of the island] and the slope extending up, all the way to the crest of this volcano that is now in the clouds… will slide away in a single massive landslide into the ocean, pushing the water up in front of it to create the Tsunami wave.

An previous earthquake (1949) in the Canaries caused the La Palma volcano to actually split nearly in half, prompting scientists to begin warning of the real possibility that massive earthquakes and volcanic activity could be devastating to residents of not only the Canary Islands, but North and South America, as well.

Given that the entire region is under earthquake warnings and parts of the Canary Islands are now being evacuated, with a red alert having been issued in the Hierro area, we find it necessary to, at the very least, inform our East Coast readers of the possible threat should a massive earthquake in the region cause a breaking away of parts of the island(s).

The USGS is apparently refusing to issue news, alerts or warnings to East Coast residence regarding the progressively deteriorating circumstances surrounding the El Hierro volcano in the Canary Islands, and a search of the USGS web site resulted in no information, news, alerts or warnings for how these events may affect the United States. Primary news channels remain silent on any possible threats as well. Modern Survival Blog's research indicates the activity is so significant that the Canary Islands have been sinking since July of this year and we are now receiving reports of widespread volcanic flows in the ocean:

A look at the GPS stations there, reveals quite evidently that most of them (6 of 10) in the area are literally sinking, and have been doing so since about July of this year. My own observations of other volcanic regions have shown that there is often ‘inflation’ or rising of the land mass prior to volcanic eruption. In this case though, there is rather dramatic deflation to the northeast of El Hierro, particularly ‘Canarias’. The region is sinking…

In stark contrast though at El Hierro, today, from VolcanoLive.com (John Seach), “An undersea eruption began off the coast of El Hierro Island, Canary Islands on 10th October 2011. Initial reports have placed the eruption site a few kilometres off the south coast of the island at a depth of about 450 m. The eruption has only been confirmed from seismic activity.”

It is our intention to keep the public aware of the possibility of large-scale natural disasters, and the events taking place in the Canary Islands certainly qualify. As the information above suggests, such events are rare, yet extremely destructive if they come to pass.

At this time we advise those on the East Coast to remain aware of the earthquake swarms off the coast of Northwest Africa. In the event a massive enough quake occurs, dislodging parts of the La Palma volcano, you'll have approximately seven (7) hours to evacuate the east coast of the United States and make your way inland before the first wave hits.

Experts say that El Hierro is calming down

Experts consider that the volcanic eruption under the sea just to the south of the Canary Island of El Hierro is losing strength, although all remain prudent as to what could occur.
A close evaluation of the conditions will continue until values return to the normal levels they were before the series of earthquakes which started last July.

A press conference held on Wednesday by Carmen López from the National Geographical Institute, and Joan Martí from the High Council for Scientific Investigation, explained that the eruption phase is probably ending, and say the signals from the site are falling gradually and the island is stabilising.
However López explained that even so, they would remain until normal values had returned.

The explained that the released magma would remain on the sea bottom, while the slick which has formed above the site would dissolve. They considered the environmental impact would be reversed quickly, explaining that the sea recovered far quicker than land.

Local fishermen have described their situation as ‘dramatic’, considering it will take years for their stocks to recover. More than 40 local families earn their livelihoods from fishing.

Residents of La Restinga are making their way back home

The slick from the volcanic eruption just to the south of the Canary Island of El Hierro now affects 80% of the coast. The slick is a mixture of iron, aluminium and silicon hydroxides generated by the underwater eruption.

The decision has been taken to reopen the Los Roquillos tunnel, during the day at least, and residents are being allowed back home to La Restinga. These two measures were the most controversial of those imposed by the Canary Island Government, and their ending comes as the experts say the intensity of the eruption has reduced for the third consecutive day.

40 families live from fishing in La Restinga, and they have been told they cannot take to the sea until next Tuesday.

In response to the recent events the Canary Government has announced the creation of a new agency for volcanic watch.

Two 3.9 earthquakes on El Hierro.

The tremor on Sunday morning is the largest seen so far in the current activity

The Canary Island of El Hierro on Sunday at 7,46am suffered an earthquake 3.9 on the Richter scale, the largest to hit in the island in the current run of tremors and volcanic action. Another tremor of the same intensity came at 1,35 pm that afternoon.

Despite being located out to sea the quakes were felt by the population on the island and indicates that the seismic activity has increased on the island over recent days. The quake was based to the NW of Frontera, at a depth of 22kms and indicates more activity to the north.

A Canary Government statement said that all possible scenarios were under investigation but it was not possible to define what was going on with sufficient precision currently.

Despite the quake the main opinion is that the volcanic process is diminishing, or moving towards a possible new eruption in the sea, similar to the new volcano which has formed underwater to the south and which is now maintaining stable.

Sunday’s two 3.9 quake followed a 3.6 quake on Saturday, again in the sea NW of Frontera and this time 23 kms deep.

A yellow volcanic alert remains in place on the island, with the exception of the area of La Restinga which remains on red alert.

Spain Evacuates Homes in El Hierro Island Due to Volcanic Activity

MADRID-- The regional government of Spain's Canary Islands has ordered the evacuation of homes and road closures near the southern tip of El Hierro island after two earth tremors and increased offshore volcanic activity caused a buildup of bad-smelling debris floating on the sea.

Seismic activity began in the area on July 17 and residents have since been rocked by more than 10,000 tremors, while underwater fissures have released an almost continuous flow of sulfurous gases, smoke and hot objects.

The government said in a statement it has evacuated 11 homes and closed the island's main road tunnel after a tremor of 3.9 magnitude on Saturday followed one of 4.4 magnitude the previous evening.

El Hierro has some 11,000 residents and was formed by volcanic activity.
