Shanghai Subway Crash Injures Dozens ![]() An injured passenger is carried away after Tuesday's subway crash in Shanghai ![]() Rescuers gather to move the injured off one of the trains. SHANGHAI—One subway train crashed into the rear end of another in central Shanghai Wednesday, injuring dozens, authorities said. The midafternoon accident in a touristy section of the city happened after signal problems left at least one engineer operating his train manually, according to Shanghai Metro, the subway-system operator. It said at least 40 people were hurt while another 500 were guided off the trains safely. The accident is likely to reignite concern in China about the integrity of the country's rail system. An accident in late July on the above-ground high-speed rail system killed at least 40 people and injured more than 190, damaging the image China's leaders projected of a technologically superior train system. Wednesday's subway accident, near Yu Gardens, took place on a line opened weeks before Shanghai last year hosted a World's Fair. It links one of city's airports with central parts of the city. In an earlier incident on the line, a train went the wrong way, apparently also due to signal problems. Television showed images of bloodied and bruised passengers being treated by firefighters and rescuers. |
