Rescuers are seen at Nanjing Iron and Steel Group Co. Ltd. in China's eastern province of Jiangsu on October 5, 201

Twelve workers have been killed after molten iron spilled from a furnace at a steel plant in China's eastern province of Jiangsu.

The incident took place at around 11:45 a.m. local time (0345 GMT) on Wednesday at a plant operated by the Nanjing Iron and Steel Group Co. Ltd., Xinhua news agency reported.

Zhang Binjie, Deputy Director of the Nanjing Municipal Work Safety Bureau, said that the workers were trying to shut down the plant when the accident occurred.

A total of 13 workers were preparing for the shutdown of the furnace at the steel plant at the time of the mishap. Rescue workers could initially recover eleven dead bodies and also save a worker, who is currently receiving treatment in a local hospital.

Another body was recovered on Thursday morning, bringing the death toll to 12.

Zhang said that melting temperature at the site had prevented the rescuers to find the last body.

He added that a thorough investigation into the cause of the accident is underway.

China has a dismal industrial safety record. Industrial safety rules have often been ignored in favor of profit, as the economy has boomed.

The latest accident revived memories of a disaster in northeast China in April 2007. Thirty-two workers died after molten steel spilled out of a mill at the Qinghe Special Steel Corporation in China's northeastern province of Liaoning.

The ladle containing 1,500-degree-Celsius liquid steel poured into an open room, where employees had gathered to prepare for their shift change.

China's demand for steel is among the highest in the world, with the country seeking to feed a boom in the construction of housing and infrastructure, such as roads and railways.
