A sad story but one from which lessons must be learned. As a pilot I am fully aware of the almost overpowering effect of spatial disorientation, which has claimed the lives of so many pilots (and passengers). When flying in cloud or at night, the lack of a visual horizon causes the body to feel false signals of motion, and can make a pilot feel he is in a climb or a turn when in fact he could be flying straight and level. The full AAIU reportwas issued this week and the cause was found to be Controlled Flight Into Terrain (CFIT) attributable to Spatial Disorientation due to a Somatogravic Illusion following the loss of Situational Awareness. which means the aeroplane was flown into the mountain due to the effects of spatial disorientation in low cloud. Thank you very much for ammending the post and clarifying the matter, the report issued by the AAIU gives a very accurate account of what actually happened .
