3.6 Magnitude Quake Hits NW Of Shetland Isles An earthquake has been detected in the North Sea about 250km northwest of The Shetland Islands. The British Geological Survey (BGS) said the 3.6 magnitude event was recorded at a depth of 37.4km at 4.30am on Saturday. A 3.5 magnitude quake was recorded 275km off the coast of Aberdeen in Scotland on February 13th. The North Sea is an active area for earthquakes. While the latest recording was significant in UK terms, the magnitude was not high in global terms. |

![]() A small earth tremor has been recorded in the southern North Sea, approximately 100km off the coast of Lowestoft in Suffolk. The 2.2 magnitude earthquake hit at 9.47pm (GMT) on Thursday, 17 March. Click here for more details. Earthquakes are quite common in Ireland and the UK but most go unnoticed. The most significant earthquake to affect Ireland in recent years took place in May 2010 when a magnitude 2.7 tremor hit Lisdoonvarna in County Clare. The quake, intensity level 3, is the most severe quake to hit the Republic of Ireland in recent years. It also was the first tremor or earthquake to be recorded in the west of Ireland in modern times. The only other recorded earthquake to hit the country in 2010 occurred on January 9th when a tremor measuring 1.6 on the Richter scale struck the Inishowen Peninsula in Donegal. An earthquake measuring 5.5 on the Richter scale, the largest ever recorded in Ireland, hit Dublin in 1984. Aftershocks from the quake measured up to 4 on the Richter scale. ![]() The latest in a series of earthquakes to be recorded in Britain since the beginning of the year has been officially registered as a 2.4 magnitude tremor by the British Geological Survey (BGS). The earthquake took place south of Inverness in northern Scotland at 11.13am today and was recorded at a depth of 7km. The quake epicentre was at Abriachan, located on the A82. A 3.5 magnitude quake was recorded in the Scottish Highlands on January 23rd while a 3.6 magnitude earth tremor hit North Yorkshire on January 3rd. Earthquakes are quite common in Ireland and the UK but most go unnoticed. ![]() A small earthquake has hit the popular seaside resort of Blackpool in the west of England, according to the British Geological Survey (BGS). The magnitude 2.3 earthquake was recorded at a depth of 9.8km below the Lancashire town. The epicentre was located between the town’s Carelton and Poulton industrial estates. Local police said calls had been received from several people who said their properties were shaking at around 3.35am, while staff at Blackpool's Bonny Street police station felt the building shake. A spokeswoman for Blackpool Council said were no reports of any damage. Brian Baptie, a BGS seismologist, said the UK experiences about 20 earthquakes a year of a similar magnitude. The last recorded quake (2.4 magnitude) occurred near Inverness in Scotland earlier this week. According to Mr. Baptie: "The movements are a relic of a post-glacial uplift left over from the last ice age. The fault line is probably about 100m long and will have moved by about 0.5cm, so it's very minor and will not have even caused superficial damage, although people will have experienced their windows rattling. If we compare it to the earthquake in Japan, which had a magnitude of 9, this Blackpool quake is billions of times smaller in terms of energy.” http://www.irishweatheronline.com/news/earthquake-rattles-blackpool.html |

Dont want to start a new thread with no real evidence but apparently there's been an earthquake in Donegal tonight! Didn't hear anything myself but apparently a drawn out thunder type of sound was heard some time between 1.10am and 1.20am. The seismograph from the nearby Inch Island would confirm a brief disturbance at the exact time of note but from previous experiences it seems a bit short lived for a proper earthquake. Thoughts? A rare 2.2 magnitude earthquake was recorded near the north Donegal village of Bunnaton early on Thursday morning, according to the British Geological Survey (BGS). It was the first earth tremor to be recorded on the island of Ireland since a 2.7 magnitude quake struck Ennistymon in County Clare in May 2010. The last tremor to be recorded in Donegal occurred in January 2010 when two tremors struck in the Termon and Milford areas, north of Letterkenny, and another was felt in Bridge End on the Inishowen (censor)nula. The BGS reported that last night’s tremor was felt in Buncrana and surrounding areas. It was recorded at a depth of 3km and took place at 01:05 AM. The epicentre was located approximately 200 metres from Bunnaton Pier in Lough Swilly. The Dublin Institute for Advanced Studies (DIAS) says it wants to hear from anyone who felt anything during this morning tremor. Mark a typo... "It was the first earth tremor to be recorded on the island of Ireland since a 2.7 magnitude quake struck Ennistymon in County Clare in May 2012." when was that Ennistymon tremor? What does a tremor like that feel like? |

Thanks Alex:) Changed that. Tremor of that magnitude would feel similar to a heavy articulated truck driving past your house. Often a loud bang is reported while others have reported a low dull rumble for a few seconds. I remember with the Lisdoon/Ennistymon quake, people recalled hearing a loud bang. One woman told Clare FM that she though her husband fell out the bed Quakes are more common in the UK and Ireland than you might think. In fact, around 20 2.2-3 mag earthquakes are recorded in the UK every year. Geologists say that much of the seismic activity in Ireland has got to do with a spring-like effect of the land after the Ice Age i.e. when the compressed ice of the ice age melted, the land began to slowly rise as the weight lifted. There are no known faultlines in Ireland. |

There is a fault line in Donegal if I'm remembering my geography properly, The 'Lenann Fault' or something similar which is an extension of the Great Glen Fault in Scotland |
